Activity 1

1. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE OF MARIA AND DIANA? Maria loves household chores while Diana likes art. Maria loves to work in the kitchen while Diana does not. Both are similar in their hobbies. None of the above

2. WHAT IS THE COMMON CHARACTERISTIC OF MARIA AND DIANA? Cooking Dancing Drawing Singing

3. HOW DOES THE COMMON CHARACTERISTIC OF MARIA AND DIANA IDENTIFIED? By classifying Know the characteristics Observing the similarities and differences All of the above

4. WHICH REFERS TO THE GROUPINGS OF THINGS BASED ON THEIR COMMON CHARACTERISTICS? Classifying Inferring Measuring Predicting

The basic science process skills: predicting

Making redictions Is making educated guesses about the outcomes of future events.

Predictions Based on both good observation and inferences made about observed events. Based on what we observe and also our past experiences the mental models we have built up from those experiences.

Two kinds of predictions 1. Interpolation 2. Extrapolation

Interpolation Is a prediction made based on observed data.

Extrapolation Is a forecast beyond observed data. Not reliable since they are beyond observation.

ACTIVITY 2

Consider the situation below. Give your prediction. The demand of the businessmen for the no increase  in the price of palay had been approved. However, after four months, they are again requesting for another no price increase on the buying of palay. What will happen if their demand will again be approved?

The basic science process skills: Communicating

communication Goes hand in hand with observation.

Referents One of the keys to communicating effectively References to items that the other person is already familiar with.

examples Sky blue Grass green Lemon yellow

Science communication Is the practice of informing, educating, raising awareness of science related topics, and increasing the sense of wonder about scientific arguments and discoveries.

COmmunicating Means giving or exchanging information verbally, orally, and/or writing such as tabular or graphical Expressing ideas in many forms such as science journals, science presentations, research proposal, posters, and flyers.

flyers Is a form of paper advertisement intended for wide distribution and typically posted or distributed in public place, handed our to individuals or sent through the mail.

Poster Is a temporary promotion of an idea, product, or event put up in a public space for mass consumption. Typically, posters include both textual and graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly text.

Journal A newspaper or magazine that deals with a particular subject or professional activity. It can also be a record of experiences, ideas, or reflections or an account day to day events, etc.

Research proposal Is a document proposing a research project, generally in the sciences or academia, and generally constitutes a request for sponsorship of that research.

Communicating Effectively requires many skills including writing, speaking, listening, reading, and making models. This process enables an individual to express ideas, feelings, and needs to others. Is basic to problem solving.

How important is developing the communicating skills of the learners?

Communication skills help to learn more from teachers. The quality of being friendly with others.

3. Communication skills help in career development 4. Enhancement in teamwork and collaborative attitude 5. Communication skills develop professionalism among students.

6. Communication skills are important for students in social networking. 7. Improvement in presence of mind and memory enhancement.

Suggested ways to develop communication skill in science Understand your audience Build your message Connect with people Tell your public story Make your science understandable Deal with controversial topics

7. Use technology 8. Offer group presentations and assignments 9. Use tasks and activities that foster critical thinking 10. Ask open-ended questions 11. Offer reflective learning opportunities 12. Embrace uncertainty
