LESSON 1: Motivational Skills Your Attitude: The Heart of the Matter Setting Goals for Yourself Learning Survival Strategies
YOUR ATTITUDE: The Heart Of the Matter 01
ATTITUDE is a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior YOUR ATTITUDE
Components of Attitudes a. Cognitive - our thoughts, beliefs, and ideas about something. b. Affective - feelings or emotions that something evokes. e.g. fear, sympathy, hate. c. Behavioral - tendency or disposition to act in certain ways toward something. Emphasis is on the tendency to act, not the actual acting; what we intend and what we do may be quite different. YOUR ATTITUDE
Your attitude must say, “I will do the work” DOING THE WORK
The most important factor for survival and success in college is not a high IQ or plenty of money or an easy balance between school, work and family life. Instead, it’s an inner commitment to doing the work. DOING THE WORK
Those people who were determined to do the work , despite all their difficulties, were the ones who succeeded. To overcome the worries, fears and demands that may seem overwhelming during semester, you must make a firm decision to do the work. Running from the work, you may lose precious time and opportunities. DOING THE WORK DESPITE DIFFICULTIES
So if you are having trouble making yourself do the work that college requires, it is in your best interest to talk to someone about it DOING THE WORK DESPITE DIFFICULTIES
Discover possibilities within yourself or try to realize the potential meaning that college can have in your life. As a result, you will be able to make the commitment to do the work that is absolutely essential to success in college. DISCOVERING THE COMMITMENT TO DO THE WORK
AVOIDANCE TACTICS
“I CAN’T DO IT” The only way people will really know that they cannot do something is by first trying – giving their best shot. The temptation is to use a defeatist attitude as an excuse for not making a real effort. AVOIDANCE TACTICS
“I’M TOO BUSY” There are real cases where people are so busy or troubled that they cannot do their work. But there are many cases where people unconsciously create conflicts in order to have an excuse for not doing what they know they should do AVOIDANCE TACTICS
“I’M TOO TIRED” People who use this excuse usually become tired as soon as its time to write a paper or study a book or go to class. Their tiredness clears up when the work period ends. AVOIDANCE TACTICS
“I’LL DO IT LATER” Some students, however, constantly postpone doing assignments and setting aside regular study hours. Time and time again they put off what need to be done so that they can watch NETFLIX, talk to friends, go to movies, play on the computer or do any one of hundred things. These type of students wind up cramming for tests and writing last-minute papers, yet they often seem surprised and angry at their low grades. AVOIDANCE TACTICS
“I’M BORED WITH THE SUBJECT” Students sometimes explain that they are doing poorly in a course because the instructor or the subject matter is boring. The student want education to be entertainment – an unrealistic expectation. On the whole, college courses and instructors balance out; Some are boring, some are exciting, many are in between. AVOIDANCE TACTICS
College, like life, is demanding. And because this is so, to get somewhere and to become someone we must be prepared and able to make a solid effort. We must accept the fact that little can be won or achieved or cherished in life without hard work. The decision that each of us must make in the commitment to do the hard work required for success in college – and ultimately in life. IN CONCLUSION
GROUD DISCUSSION “A person who does not go to class faithfully is showing that he or she is not committed to doing the work that college requires.” Give atleats 2 reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with this statement
