Baucis and Philemon An ancient love story
SUMMARY In the hilly countryside of Phrygia, there grew two trees which were cause for much amazement to anyone who saw them. You see, one was an oak tree and the other was a linden, yet the two grew from a single trunk. Let us know how does it happen and what lesson we can get from the story...
SUMMARY One day, Zeus, the king of Olympian gods became tired of all the stuffs and routine he’s been doing up on Mount Olympus and decided to leave the place and went down to earth in a mortal disguise together with Hermes the messenger god.
SUMMARY On this occasion, they aim to see how hospi -table the people of the Phrygia were, so they turn themselves into poor travelers disguise and started to knock on doors to see if there were people who will open their doors for this poor people. Time has passed and there are no people of Phrygia that open their doors for them, but instead they have received insults.
SUMMARY That attitude of the people has made Zeus very angry and wanted to punish the Phrygians. Just as they decided to end the journey, they suddenly notice a humble little hovel and there comes the two old couple named Baucis and Philemon, who cheerfully welcome them and give them room to stay, which is small but clean.
SUMMARY The couple from time to time, make sure that their unexpected guest will be comfortable. Later that night, the couple had prepared a simple “feast” and wine for the visitors, apologizing and tell the gods “We don’t have much to offer you, but poverty isn’t so bad when your spirit is rich and you’re filled with love!” the gods was amazed by their character.
SUMMARY Later that night while gods are eating their food, the couple have noticed that the wine they were serving is continuously flowing and the cup has never run out of wine, because of that they have suspected that their unexpected visitors are not mortals.
SUMMARY So they apologize again for the feast they had offered and told the gods that they will give them their goose for a better food to eat, after a long time of chasing their goose, the gods finally revealed themselves and revealed their purpose,
SUMMARY They told the couple that they become very disappointed in Phrygia and wanted to punish the people but the gods assured them that because of their wonderful deed or hospitality towards them, they will not include the couple in the punishment but instead the gods offered a wish for them to be granted.
SUMMARY The couple first asked the gods in behalf of the other people in Phrygia to forgive them, and then asked to serve as his priests, living and guarding his temple until the end. The only other thing they asked of Zeus was that they should never live alone, but would even die together.
SUMMARY One day, by now both in extreme old age, they stood outside their majestic home and began to reminisce about their younger days, when things were so hard and realized how happy they were since then, they were just so in love.
SUMMARY The memories flooded from them and they reveled at the fullness of their lives. Philemon suddenly saw Baucis bear leaves, and the same was happening to him! In no time bark was growing around them and they only had time for one last kiss and a joyous cry of “Farewell dear companion!” before they became trees.
SUMMARY But still they were together, forever. You see, the linden and the oak grew from the same trunk and it was so beautiful.
Take note: Let us grow in love. Don’t forget to extend your love to others and welcome everyone whatever their status in life is or how they look in their outside appearance, don’t forget that “the godliest act is to offer hospitality to poor strangers.”
MORAL LESSON
Treat everyone well because you never know you'll fine yourself in the presence of a god.
