Stories behind the creation of BBS After independence of Bangladesh, there were four agencies engaged in statistical data generation, dissemination but they were working independently of each other. So , Bangladesh needed a centralized statistical system . Thus, in 1974, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) was created.
Mission and Vision Vision of BBS The vision: a world-class data provider of authentic, relevant and timely data in a holistic and user-friendly manner. Mission of BBS To establish an integrated, professional, efficient and effective NSS, under the guidance and leadership of the BBS. To produce and publish official statistics that meet the current and growing needs of national and international users in a transparent and timely fashion using international standards and the best statistical practices. 6

Census wing
Census Wing 3 decennial censuses are conducted: Population and Housing census Agriculture census Economic census BBS Staffs collecting data regarding census
Barcode input sheet is used for collecting census information where they use “Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)”
Ad-hoc Surveys conducted: Literary Assessment Survey (LAS) where the level of education of the population is assessed with a competency test. On-going Project: Census of the undocumented Myanmar nationals staying in Bangladesh

Demography and Health WING
The main functions are to produce statistics on all demographic events such as, fertility, mortality marriage HIV indicator survey Demography And Health Survey Demography and Health wing is responsible for compiling and publishing statistics relating to the population of Bangladesh and its health status.
Recently , they have done many surveys including ‘‘Violence Against Women In Bangladesh” and “Slum Areas & Floating Population”
AGRICULTURAL WING
Compile annual estimates of the acreage, production and yield rate of 6 major crops and 118 minor crops The Wing also produces seasonal forecasts of the area under cultivation and the production of major crop The estimation of crop-damage caused by natural calamities . Computer Wing provides all type of IT support to the rest of the BBS
D ata capture, processing and tabulation of different censuses and surveys are done by this wing They also maintain server of BBS.
Recent Developments This wing has launched “BBS android app” recently . For advanced mapping , now the wing is focusing on “GIS technology”. Screenshot grabbed from Google play store
Apart from these wings BBS also have 2 service wings One is Finance , Administration and MIS which manages the administration of BBS Another is Statistical Staff Training Institute which works to improve the work efficiency of BBS staffs and officials . Impact of Climate Change on Human Life Program In order to measure the effect of climate change on human life in Bangladesh BBS has been implementing this program. Under this program BBS has initiated different kinds of censuses and surveys Poster Of Survey under this program
