BEAWARE OF
AGEISM
AFTER J GRIMLEY EVANS. OXFORD TEXTBOOK OF GERIATRIC MEDICINE
BEAWARE OF AGEISM
►Contrary to stereotype, most old people are healthy. 95% over 65 yr,
and 80% over 85yr do not live in institutions; about 70% of the latter
can manage stairs and bath without help.
►If there is a problem, find the cause. Do not accept problems as the
inevitable result of aging. Look for: disease; loss of fitness; and social
factors, which may be amenable to therapy.
►Do not restrict treatment simply because a person is old. The elderly
vary. Age alone is a poor predictor of outcome for an individuals
and should not be used as a substitute for careful clinical
assessment of each patient’s potential for benefit and risk.
Characteristics of disease in the
elderly
►Multiple pathology
►Multiple etiology
►Non specific presentation of disease
►Rapid deterioration
►Complications are common
►More time required for recovery
►Impaired metabolism and excretion of drugs
►Social factors are central in aiding recovery and return to home
