WHAT IS BED MAKING?
•Hospital bed is a piece of equipment most
frequently used by the hospitalized
patient
•It should be selected for its impact on
patients’ comfort, safety, medical
condition, and ability to change positions
PURPOSE OF BED MAKING
• To have the bed neat and clean helps
keep a sick person comfortable
• Clean sheets with no wrinkles helps
infection free and prevent bedsores
• Neat and tidy bed provides an
appearance and give a positive energy
to the patient

Making a bed with a person in it
(occupied)
Making a bed without a person in it
(Unoccupied/empty)
RULES FOR MAKING HOSPITAL
BED
•Collect all requirements before starting.
•Two nurses are required and they should
work in harmony, avoiding jerky
movements and jarring the bed
•Never cover the patients FACE with sheet
or blanket
•Never expose the patient

•Call for extra assistance to lift the patient
•Turn away from the patient, when shaking bed
linen and pillows
•Conversation during bed making should
include the patient, not on personal matters
between nurses

•Post operation bed
UNOCCUPIED/EMPTY BED
MAKING
Client is able to get out of bed (OOB)
Assess: Inspect bed for bodily fluids or
secretions
Yes: use disposable gloves
-Inspect to see if client left anything
WHAT MIGHT THEY HAVE LEFT
IN THE BED?
•Eye glasses
•Hearing aides
•Religious objects
•Dentures
•Reading materials
•Radios, C/D players
•Smoking materials
•Prescribed Medication
•Illegal drugs
•Dirty tissues

• Knock on the Patients door and
politely ask permission to enter and
make bed
•Help the Patient to get up from the
bed and sit on the chair
• Remove the soiled bedsheet &
Pillow cover

•Check to see what linens you might need:
large sheets, draw sheet, blanket, bedspread,
pillow cases, linen bag/plastic, protective pad
•Adjust height of bed to waist level
•Put side-rails down and disconnect any thing
attached to the linens

•Loosen all linen
•Fold reusable linens
•Roll up soiled linen into bottom sheet and put in
linen bag/plastic
•Work from one side to another and from top to
bottom

•Tuck sheets tightly
•Seams side down/bottom sheet and seams
side up on top sheet
•Document the procedure for continuity of
care

• Settle the patient comfortably on the
bed again, thank him, and then leave
the room
• Note: Stained & Damage bedsheets
& Pillow covers should be replaced
immediately
