AN ORAL PRESENTATION ON STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) UNDERTAKEN AT EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL ADO EKITI , EKITI STATE. PRESENTATION ON ELECTROCARDIOGRAM PRESENTED BY ; EHINAFE BLESSING TIMILEHIN (2003003076)

OUTLINE INTRODUCTION ABOUT ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG) TYPES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM PROCEDURES FOR ELECTROCARDIOGRAM REASONS FOR ELECTROCARDIOGRAM SCAN CHALLENGES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM SOLUTIONS TO THE CHALLENGES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM CONCLUSION RECOMMENDATION

INTRODUCTION Ekiti state university teaching hospital (EKSUTH) is strategically located in Ado-Ekiti, It was established in 2008. Formerly known as ‘The University Teaching Hospital’, this is a tertiary health facility affiliated with Ekiti State university, that provides secondary and tertiary medical care. It is also involved in the training of high and middle level manpower for the health industry.

ABOUT ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG) An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a quick test that checks the heartbeat by recording the electrical signals in the heart. During the test, small electrodes (usually sticky patches) are placed on the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes detect the electrical impulses generated by the heart as it beats, and the impulses are displayed as waves on a graph or monitor. ECG results can aid in diagnosing heart attacks and irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).

TYPES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET): This evaluation assesses the cardiopulmonary system. It helps detect cardiac or pulmonary diseases. Exercise EKG (Stress Test): Conducted while a patient walks on a treadmill or pedals a stationary bicycle, this test monitors the heart during stress or exercise. Holter Monitor: A continuous ECG monitoring device worn for 24 hours or longer. Resting 12-Lead EKG: The standard test for measuring heart electrical function. Signal-Averaged EKG: A more detailed EKG that captures abnormal heartbeats occurring intermittently.

PROCEDURES FOR ELECTROCARDIOGRAM Electrode Placement: Small, plastic patches (electrodes) are attached to specific spots on patient chest, arms, and legs.(These electrodes are connected to an ECG machine using lead wires). Measurement of Electrical Activity: The ECG machine records the electrical signals produced by the patient heart. -No electricity is sent into the body during this process. Evaluation: The attending doctor then interprets the ECG tracing and discusses the results with the patient.

CON.

REASONS FOR ELECTROCARDIOGRAM SCAN Chest Pain: ECG helps evaluate the cause of chest pain. Heart-Related Symptoms e.g severe tiredness (fatigue), shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting. Irregular Heartbeats (Arrhythmias) Reveal Previous Heart Attack Monitoring Medications Checking Implanted Heart Equipment

CHALLENGES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM Accuracy of Interpretation: ECG interpretation requires expertise. Safety and Artifacts: Factors like obesity, movement during the test, exercise, and certain medications can affect ECG accuracy. Common-Mode Interference: ECGs can be affected by external electrical noise, leading to false readings. Education Challenges:Teaching accurate ECG interpretation is essential, but it can be challenging due to the complexity of waveforms and variations.

SOLUTION TO CHALLENGES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM Education Enhancement Quality Assurance Echo- Cardiogram 24 hrs ECG

RECOMMENDATION Students should spend the Industrial Training period wisely, judiciously and diligently so as to acquire knowledge because, ‘opportunity comes but once’. Students should have their industrial training in a place relevant to their course of study. To the Organization; - Facilitation; More facilities such as hospital beds, machines and workers should be made available. -Employment; The setting should employ more medical practitioners to Oba Adejugbe General hospital.

CONCLUSION In conclusion Electrocardiogram is a background of consultation for cardiac conditions as it helps to detect and diagnose heart condition in a painless way ECGs aid in diagnosing conditions such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), ischemia (reduced blood flow to the heart), and hypertrophy (enlargement) of the heart.
