WEEK 9: THE GREAT FLOOD & THE TOWER OF BABEL Stories of Destruction, Covenant, and the Human Spirit in the Filipino Context
LEARNING OBJECTIVES This lesson explores two foundational stories from Genesis: Noah's Ark and the Tower of Babel. We aim to understand the narrative of the Great Flood and its impact, internalizing its wisdom by connecting it to our own experiences with calamities in the Philippines, such as typhoons and floods. We will also examine the Tower of Babel to understand its relevance to the Holy Spirit's revelation, experiencing God's love through signs and symbols that resonate in our culture.
THE STORY OF NOAH - A WORLD OF WICKEDNESS The story begins with God seeing the great wickedness of humanity on earth, which caused Him pain and sorrow. He decided to destroy all life. However, Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. God spoke to Noah, warning him of a coming flood that would destroy everything. He commanded Noah to build a massive ark of gopher wood and to bring his family and pairs of every living creature on board to preserve them. Noah did everything just as the Lord had commanded him.
KEY POINTS: God was sorry He had created man because of their wickedness. Noah was found to be righteous and was chosen by God. God gave Noah specific instructions to build an ark and save his family and the animals.
THE STORY OF NOAH - THE GREAT FLOOD When Noah was 600 years old, the flood began. Rain poured down on the earth for forty days and forty nights. The waters rose so high they covered all the mountains. For us in the Philippines, who have seen the devastation of typhoons like Yolanda, we can imagine the terrifying scale of this event. Every living creature on the face of the earth died. Only Noah and those with him in the ark were left.
KEY POINTS: The rain lasted for 40 days and 40 nights. The floodwaters were so high they covered all the mountains. Only the inhabitants of the ark survived the cataclysm.
THE STORY OF NOAH - A NEW BEGINNING After 150 days, God sent a wind, and the waters began to recede. The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Once the land was dry, God commanded them all to come out of the ark and repopulate the earth. The first thing Noah did was build an altar and offer a sacrifice to God to give thanks for their salvation. God was pleased and promised never again to destroy the earth with a flood. As a sign of this covenant, He placed a rainbow in the clouds.
KEY POINTS: The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. Noa h's first act was to offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving. God made a covenant and set the rainbow as its sign.
THE STORY OF THE TOWER OF BABEL After the flood, everyone on earth spoke one language. They settled in the land of Shinar and, full of pride, decided to build a city with a tower that reached the skies to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered. God saw their ambition was rooted in pride, so He came down and confused their language so they could no longer understand each other. They stopped building the city, and from there, the Lord scattered them all over the earth. This is why the city was called Babel.
KEY POINTS: All of humanity had one language and was united in their ambition. T hey built the tower to make a name for themselves, an act of pride. God confused their language, which caused them to stop building and scatter
SUMMARY & VALUES TO LIVE BY These two stories call us to integrate specific virtues into our lives. The story of Noah teaches us gratitude to God, an appreciation for life, and an awareness of the effects of evil. The story of the Tower of Babel teaches us the importance of humility and being open to the Holy Spirit's guidance. Together, they challenge us to set aside our pride and live in a way that builds unity and gives thanks to God for His promises.
