Benefits and Challenges of Using Open Educational Resources (OER) Hoewoon Kim OER 101July 2024
Benefits of Using OER Cost Savings: OER are freely accessible and can significantly reduce the cost of educational materials for students and institutions. Accessibility: OER can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection, making education more accessible globally.
Benefits of Using OER Up-to-Date Content: OER can be frequently updated to reflect the latest information and developments in a subject area. Equity: OER help bridge the educational divide by providing high-quality resources to underserved and disadvantaged communities.
Benefits of Using OER Flexibility and Customization: Educators can modify and adapt OER to fit their teaching needs and local contexts, promoting a more personalized learning experience.
Challenges of Using OER Quality and Reliability: The quality of OER can vary, and some resources may not be peer-reviewed or professionally edited. Sustainability: Maintaining and updating OER requires time, effort, and funding, which can be challenging to sustain in the long term.
Challenges of Using OER Intellectual Property Concerns: Understanding and navigating the licensing agreements of OER can be complex and may deter some educators from using them. Integration with Existing Systems: Integrating OER with existing curricula and learning management systems can be challenging and may require additional support and resources.
Challenges of Using OER Limited Subjects and Levels: While the availability of OER is growing, there may still be gaps in resources for certain subjects or educational levels.
Other considerations As a faculty member, I’ll develop methods to assess the effectiveness of OER in achieving learning outcomes and collect feedback from students on their experiences with OER to make informed improvements.
