Analysis Of Jane Hirshfield s Poem Tree
Jane Hirshfield connects to nature at her home in Marin County, California this is where she
gets her inspiration for her poems. Hirshfield published Tree in 2000 as a free verse poem,
divided into 4 stanzas and 4 sentences to convey the nature world. The poem represents a young
redwood (line 2) growing near a house, near a kitchen window. The redwood is already scraping
against the window frame of the house, reminding the reader of the foolish (line 1) idea of
letting it grow there. Humans were created to be one with nature, but as they evolved as a
species, they were obligated to choose between the materialistic world or the world of nature.
Hirshfield writes this poem in second person to give life to the poem so that the poem speaks to
the reader. The poem starts by accusing the reader of letting the redwood grow near the house. It
is foolish (line 1) lets the reader know that nature should not be growing this close to your home.
Hirshfield takes the liberty to talk straight to the reader through the speaker in telling them that it
is nonsense to let nature be so close to a material object such as a house. The reader can visually
see a young redwood// grow next to a house (line 2, 3). The tree starts to symbolize the beauty of
nature growing against the materialistic world. A new sentence leads into the second stanza to
introduce a new idea; it shifts the attention of the poem from the imagery of the redwood growing
against the house to the shortness of the

Microorganisms
In this essay I will be analysing micro organisms and disease. Firstly I will be defining micro
organisms and then explaining the key features of the main categories of microorganisms.
Followed by the roles of commensals and pathogens I will then go on to explain how micro
organisms are transmitted and the routes of entry to and exit from the human body of micro
organisms. I will also be explaining the logical sequence of events that occur from entry of a
micro organism to the body to the appearance of symptoms of a disease and then go onto discuss
why not all infections lead to a disease. Finally I will explain a logical sequence the signs,
symptoms and treatments of yellow fever which is an infectious disease. Micro organisms are...

Fungi such as mushroom, molds, and yeasts are eukaryotic cells with a true nucleus. Most fungi
are multicellular and their cell wall is composed of chitin. They obtain nutrients by absorbing
organic material from their environment decomposers, through symbiotic relationships with plants
(symbionts), or harmful relationships with a host (parasites). They form characteristic
filamentous tubes called hyphae that help absorb material. The collection of hyphae is called
mycelium. Fungi reproduce by releasing spores. Protozoa are unicellular aerobic eukaryotes.
They have a nucleus, complex organelles, and obtain nourishment by absorption or ingestion
through specialized structures. They make up the largest group of organisms in the world in
terms of numbers, biomass, and diversity. Their cell walls are made up of cellulose. Protozoa
have been traditionally divided based on their mode of locomotion: flagellates produce their own
food and use their whip like structure to propel forward, ciliates have tiny hair that beat to produce
movement, amoeboids have false feet or pseudopodia used for feeding and locomotion, and
sporozoans are non motile. They also have different means of nutrition, which groups them as
autotrophs or heterotrophs. Viruses are noncellular entities that consist of a nucleic acid core (DNA
or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat. Although viruses are classified as microorganisms, they are
not considered living organisms. Viruses cannot reproduce

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Movies that feature characters adapted from novels often change personality traits in order to suit
the film s plot. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is no exception; Mina Harker and the
Invisible Man had drastic changes made to their personality in order to better suit the storyline.
Both of them were given traits that starkly contradict their book personas to create more flawed and
realistic characters.
The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells features Griffin, a scientist who has discovered how to turn
himself and other things invisible. The story follows the undoing of Griffin and his fall into
notoriety. Wilhelmina Mina Harker is the opposite of Griffin. In Dracula by Bram Stoker she is the
dutiful wife to Jonathan Harker, who has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be attributed to the fact that Rodney Skinner is not the original Invisible Man. Skinner
is a petty thief who stole the formula for invisibility and used it on himself. The biggest
difference between Griffin and Skinner is their response to setbacks. In The Invisible Man
Griffin has a terrible temper. When things don t go his way he lashes out or injures those who try
to stop him. Skinner, on the other hand, has a very calm demeanor. After finding out that the
League had been betrayed he didn t lash out; in fact he took that as an opportunity to prove
himself as useful to the team. This difference is caused by Griffin and Skinner s motivations. At
first Skinner used his invisibility as a way to become a better thief. Despite his primary intentions,
Skinner began to use his invisibility for the greater good. Griffin however, wanted to use
invisibility to gain recognition. It was ironic how he turned himself invisible so people would begin
to notice him.
Griffin s selfish behavior is made clear throughout The Invisible Man, especially towards the end.
Griffin uses a man named Mr. Marvel as a pawn and puts the old man in danger in order to protect
himself. We also find out that his selfish behavior started long before he became invisible. We see
Griffin tell Kemp about how he stole money from his father to further his scientific investigations.
This is opposite to Skinner s self sacrificing behavior in the

Rhetorical Analysis Of Charleston Hope
Rhetorical Analysis
In the view of Lloyd Blitzer, he explains what makes situations rhetorical that is identical to a
moral act . His definition of a moral act is when you act or preform by any situation. He shows
examples of different types of rhetorical analysis that happened in the past. Blitzer states that a
rhetorical analysis is a change in reality. Therefore, he is saying that it is an action or new
information that is to be addressed or known. He states that rhetorical analysis should be followed
by a rhetorical method. Blitzer mentioned that there are three main components when writing a
rhetorical analysis. One component to look for is referred to as exigence. Exigence is the reason
you are proving something. Audience is the part of a rhetorical analysis that involves people that
you are trying to get to understand your situation. Lloyd stated that everyone is being capable by
the change of speech. From my perspective, Blitzer s rhetorical audience consists only of people
who are more likely influenced by discourse and have the possibility of becoming mediators of
change. The final component is constraint. Constraint deals with limitation and restrictions in a
rhetorical analysis. Charleston Hope provides a great opportunity to become involved and assist with
its mission throughout the community.

The Second Alliance And The Triple Entente
The time leading up to the first world war was a time of make alliances. These alliances started
out as small agreements between countries turned into a force that divided the major powers of
Europe into two alliances. These alliance were the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente.
Agreements made within these alliances help to pave the way to the war. The first of these
alliances that was formed was the Triple Alliance. It was formed in secrecy in may of 1882. This
alliance was made up of Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy. (Kann) Although Germany and
Austria hungary were allies before the formation of the Triple Alliance, Italy was not added into
the Alliance until they wanted assistance with France. France at this time beat out Italy in obtain
some of North Africa. (Britanica) The terms of this alliance were that if Italy was ever attacked by
France, Germany and Austria Hungary would come to its assistance. It also stated that, if Germany
was attacked by France then Italy would come in to help them. Finally they agreed that Italy would
have to stay neutral if Austria Hungary ever got into a war with Russia. The alliance was renewed
again in the february of 1887. This time, in addition to the agreements that were already made,
Germany told Italy that it would help them in North Africa ( even though they never had any
intentions of doing so). Germany also convinced Austria Hungary to continue their alliance with

1. Circumstances and Several Main Problems of EIIC at 1991
1.1 Changes in the economic environment and its impacts to EIIC
Engineering Inspection amp; Insurance Co. (EIIC) is a small and medium sized insurance Enterprise
depended on its distinctive competence, machinery and boiler inspection service. EIIC was a highly
successful company before 1990. However the economic environment changed progressively when
EIIC reached its flourishing stage. These changes reformed the new development road for insurance
industries and consequently generated enormous troubles to EIIC.

1.2 Structural Problems that Stop the Growth of EIIC
After analysing the big picture of insurance circumstance, this chapter will discuss the main
problems of EIIC in terms of structural operation and strategic operation in other to find the most
critical fault and some assumed solutions to fix it.
The increasing employee turnover is a very apparent sigh of company dysfunction at EIIC s
organisational structure. According to the case files, there were a lot of complex conflicts between
managers and employees, branch offices and headquarter, technical personnel and administrative
personnel. The most remarkable conflict came from branch managers and the chief inspectors,
which had been finely noticed by EIIC s top officers. So the high employee turnover rate is caused
by the current ineffective organisational structure of EIIC. Both of chief inspector and the bank
manager have the right to make the final decision of whether to insure certain risks or not. What s
more, it is impossible for bank managers to monitor their inspection workers. In conclusion, the
disorganization of the management layer caused more and more conflicts among the staffs and
consequently beat down the employee morals.

Unfortunately, out of management level, EIIC also have problems in the term of

Social Marketing
Henderson (2001) also adds that:
Embracing CSR would inevitably have consequences that would raise the cost of doing business,
could well reduce revenues, and might also cause companies to sponsor low yielding investment
which they would otherwise have turned down.
In addition, organizations really motivated to apply and absorb CSR as a core value in its
activities, would have to undergo a deep and internal change in its business operations and culture
(employees, suppliers, offices) which represents a costly task and a time consuming mission.
(Henderson, 2001)

For instance Middlemiss (2003 cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.585) explains that CSR is taking
centre stage to provide more sustainable long term brand value . Blumenthal and Bergstrom (2003
cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.585) describe it as the convergence of branding and Corporate
Social Responsibility .
Lou and Bhattacharya (2009) maintain that CSR creates a level of Moral Capital , which then
translates into Relational wealth with different stakeholders. This is based on brand faith and
credibility with costumers, affective commitment among employees and regulators, trust among
suppliers and higher attractiveness for investors in general. Consequently it is important for
organizations, to understand that CSR initiatives need to be communicated and transmitted to its
group of interest. As Blomqvist and Posner (2004 cited in Comfort et al. 2007, pp.584) propose:
Companies are losing out because there is often little or no integration between CSR and Marketing
departments and their respective strategies and unless CSR becomes central to the Marketing
director s agenda, it will not have the desired effect and can potentially create a backlash.
Lou and Bhattacharya (2009) also add that companies investing in these CSR initiatives can
develop market based intangible assets like Customer loyalty, which can then reduce uncertainty
about future profits of the firm.

A Brief Note On The Attack Recovery Plan
Radiological Attack Recovery Plan Thesis Statement: It is essential for all the bodies of
authority as well as the public to have a proper plan to mitigate the impacts caused by a possible
radiological attack exposure. The local, public, and national emergency preparedness in
responding to a radiological detonation could lead to saving of many lives. 1.Introduction
I.Define radiological emergency, causes and effects of radiological emergency, areas prone to
radiological emergencies A radiological emergency is an emergency in which there is or there
seems to be a hazard due to radiation exposure from a radioactive source. This may result from a
variety of reasons such as uncontrolled sources, misuse of equipment or malicious acts.
Although there has been no successful terrorist attack has happened in the US since 9/11,
terrorism experts are wary that one is likely to occur in the near future. Numerous terrorism
plans of various proportions have been foiled in the US. These include plans to detonate
radiological dispersal devices (RDD) (Eggen Sxhmidt, 2002). Al Qaeda has expressed intent to
obtain and use nuclear devices in the United States with Osama bin Laden having declared it a
duty on Muslims to acquire nuclear devices (Ferguson et al, 2004, Lawrence, 2005). Although
nuclear attacks are way too complicated for terrorists a simpler equally psychologically effective
means exists. The use of radio active materials on various soft targets offers cost and simplicity

A Positive Performance Analysis
Three positive things about my performance I thought were my calming voice, reflection on topic
of discussion and body gestures. Throughout my presentation I thought that my voice was
reassuring to listen to and not over enthusiastic. I think that throughout my intake interview it was
important for me to think of myself of being in the position of talking normally to a friend and I
think that showed through my performance. In contrast, during my conversation with my friend
Sarah, I asked her questionsin regards to how her disorder has impacted her leisure lifestyle, what
activities she likes to do and what activities she would like to try doing throughout her sessions. I
listened to her as she gave her responses and I thought that I did well at asking her further questions
and confronting certain topics to betterunderstand her point of view. I then reflect off that by
reiterating what she had previously said, but stated it in a different way. I thought this was
beneficial because I overall felt more comfortable asking her more questions, which lead to a
deeper conversation. Lastly, I thought my non verbal skills were relaxed, I remained engaged
throughout the conversation with eye contact and the distance between us was at a comfortable
place. Generally, I feel like I had a positive performance because I have done a similar
interviewing project in the past and I think that I was naturally able to have a conversation. Open

Scott Sander Merger Analysis
Whether it s a merger, an acquisition or just plain transformation into another business entity,
retailers today are branching out into areas up to now unimagined by the business community. One
such area are plans for expansion that present unique opportunities for the New York based

The Wind of Change Is Blowing
The Westfield mega mall conglomerate already owns over 35 retail malls in the U.S., the U.K. and

such, but specialty restaurants, TV production and viewing, dance productions and vast Internet

Under the Westfield corporate banner, Sanders continues with the development and production of
Broadway bound plays including Tootsie, Coal Miner s Daughter and Up Here. Moreover, a

Not All Women Are For Children
Not all women are meant to have children. No two women will ever handle a situation the same,
but they will all have the same ending. The reader is introduced to two very different individuals,
although both were mothers. Tessie Hutchinson (The Lottery) and Hester (The Rocking Horse
Winner) were both from very average families. Both were married and had children. The difference
was that Hester felt that children were forced upon her and felt that she could not lovethem, even
though everyone that knew her thought she was a great mother. Nevertheless, when her children
were present, she always felt the center of her heart go hard. (Kennedy Gioia 2013, 235). Tessie
Hutchinson, on the other hand seemed to be a very good mother, and was even late for the drawing
of the lottery. Her lateness was explained by herself to Mr. Summers by stating, Wouldn t have
me leave m dishes in the sink, now would you, Joe? (Kennedy Gioia 2013, 252). Tessie was so
caught up in doing her motherly chores she almost forgot the important day, until she went looking
for her children. She even took time out to speak with other women prior to finding her family.
This would make one think that Tessie is the better mother, but only time will tell. Isaiah 66:9

delivery shut the womb? says your God. Christians understand, that due to unfortunate

We Must Keep Your Computer Safer
Introduction
There are simple steps that can be taken to make your computer safer. Every computer connected
to a network is at risk of being attacked, but knowledge of each threat that can occur and knowing
how to minimize your security risk can help in the setup of a new computer and the ones that you
already have. With knowing how to prevent your computer from being attacked will help you in
setting up accounts for social media as well because you will be able to tell what and who is
harmful to your account.
Threats and Vulnerabilities Though it has been some years since I have set up a Twitter account
it hasn t been the last time I ve set up a social network account. I had created one for the purpose

Essay on Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, was born on March 15, 1767 in
Waxhaw on the North Carolina South Carolina border. He is a controversial man who greatly
impacted our country both during his presidency and long term. His actions may have been
questioned at the time, as some still are today, but his strong willed chauvinism in democracy is
just what our country needed to hold itself together. Jackson did not have a typical family setting
growing up. His father passed away before his birth, leaving his mother the single parent of three
young boys. To help lighten the burden of raising young children on her own, his mother moved in
with her Crawford relatives. There Jackson attended school, attaining an... Show more content on

It wasn t until 1794 that they were officially married after Mr. Robards agreed to a divorce. The
promiscuity of their affair later hindered Jackson s political career (Anderson et al. 207).
However, at the time, Nashville didn t see anything wrong with the relationship between these
two deeply devoted lovers. Despite the accusations Jackson received concerning his questionable
adulterous acts, they did not affect his impressive rise in Tennessee politics. In 1795 he was
delegated to the state constitutional convention and later Tennessee s first congressman and then
senator. After his first year as senator, Jackson resigned to accept a job closer to home, judge of
Tennessee s superior court. Along his political ride, Jackson held his share of outrageous quarrels.
A hothead himself, Jackson was no foreigner to fights, brawls, or duels. Of these numerous
encounters, the most infamous began over a simple misunderstanding with Charles Dickinson
over a horse race in 1806. This rift ended in a duel between the two men. Dickinson, a marksman,
fired the first shot and struck Jackson in the chest. Despite the wound, Jackson showed no sign of
pain and instead aimed precisely and fatally shot Dickinson (Stone 264). It was encounters such as

Drugs Is Dangerous And Illegal
Driving under the influence of drugs is quite dangerous and illegal. It not only puts the driver at
risk but the passengers and other drivers as well. The 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and
Health estimated that 9.9 million people (or 3.8 percent) who were twelve or older that reported
driving under the influence of drugs (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Although, a survey by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that more than 22 percent of drivers tested
positive for illegal, prescription, or over the counter drugs (National Institute on Drug Abuse). As
stated above, there were one in six college students who had access to a car that drove under the
influence of drugs at least once (National Institute on Drug... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to the Drug Policy Alliance, injecting heroin has the greatest risk of overdose because it
allows large amounts of heroin into the bloodstream at once. Money is something that everyone
wants to have. Everyone needs it to buy the basics: food, shelter, water. Being addicted to heroin
compromises that. Heroin addicts usually will not save up money. Once they get money it goes
straight to the addiction. They buy as much as they can afford usually. They forgo getting food or
water just so they can get their drug of choice. This could put a strain on family relationships as
well. Heroin addicts start off by asking their parents or family members for money promising
they will pay them back. When the family sees that the addict is using it for drugs, the addict
could get kicked out of the house and banished from the family. Society views heroin addicts in a
very negative way. Most people think that heroin addicts are homeless, which they very well
could be. People do not see that heroin addicts need help. They just see them as a piece of trash
that is always begging for money. People who are addicted to drugs are portrayed in the media
(Draus, Roddy, Greenwald, 2010) which is how society portrays them too. Being addicted to
heroin in society s eyes means that there is an extreme lack of control over one s own daily
behaviors (Draus et al, 2010).

Critical, Theological Review of the Film Chocolat Essay
Set in 1950 s France, Chocolat is a film centred on the Catholic virtue of temperance, or rather the
struggle to achieve temperance when the church is faced with the temptation of a 2000 year old
chocolate recipe. Temperance is defined in the catholic encyclopaedia as the righteous habit which
makes a man govern his natural appetite for pleasures of the senses in accordance with the norm
prescribed by reason , and in Chocolat it is the Comte de Reynaud, the major and self appointed
moral authority for the whole community, that attempts to keep check of the villager s carnal
passions and temptations. There is an obvious conflict between the Comte and Vianne Rocher, the
single mother who arrives in Lansquenet bringing a splash of red to... Show more content on

The Comte reacts by slamming the door shut against the wind, forcing it, and its possible
changing qualities, out of the church. It is the season of Lent, and the restrictions of that
religious season are strictly enforced in the village. The citizens are ruled with an iron fist by the
mayor and there is little joy in the village with the inhabitants slaves to the religious oppression
of the Comte de Reynaud. Even the young Catholic priest, Pere Henri is controlled by the mayor.
The mayor even tells Pere Henri at one point, If you haven t seen the chocolaterie, you might want
to take a look. It s important to know one s enemies. Thus, anything and anyone who opposes this
man s rigid religious tradition is the enemy , an attitude often seen, even today among religious
extremists and legalistic believers. The Comte encourages the villagers to resist the temptations of
Vianne s sweet chocolates, telling them to boycott immorality , and a tussle ensues between him
and Vianne. Jeff Shannon, a noted film critic, comments, The film covers familiar territory and
deals in broad metaphors that even a child could comprehend. There is nothing deep or complex
about the message, and yet the cinematic metaphors are so broad that countless applications are
possible. The film begins with the introduction, Once upon a time , thus some see it as a kind of
superior fable or parable of the eternal cosmic battle between good

The Failure of the Great Leap Forward
The Great Leap Forward was Mao s new economic plan, which took place in China in 1958. The
idea of the Great Leap Forward was the rapid growth of agricultural and industrial production. It
focused on improving the productivity of all Chinese workers by investing in human development
and labour intensive technology. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials believed it would bring
about economic and technical development in great leaps rather than at a gradual pace. By using
China s advantage of manpower, Mao expected China to equal or exceed the industrial output of
Great Britain and the United States. Virtually every Chinese citizen took part in the Great Leap
Forward, from the lowliest peasant to the highest ranking CCP members. The... Show more content

Government spending on heavy industry grew in 1958 to represent 56 percent of state capital
investment, an increase from 38 percent in 1956. The backyard steel production plan resulted in
entire forests being burned to fuel the smelters that melt metal 24 hours a day, which left the
land open to erosion. Dense cropping and deep ploughing stripped the farmland and left if
vulnerable as well. When the autumn of 1958 came, many areas had a bumper crop because the
soil was not yet exhausted. This played a role in crop failures and eventually famine. With so
much emphasis on steel output as well as on development of other small industries and building
projects, people were pulled away from agriculture. Local leaders competed with one another to
see who could create the most activity. In the rush to recruit labor, agricultural tasks were
neglected, sometimes leaving the grain harvest to rot in the fields. Crop production began to falter.
But Mao was adamant about increasing agricultural output, and communes were expected to meet
high quotas or face punishment. In the frenzy of the competition, the CCP officers and many
peasants exaggerated their harvests to their superiors in Beijing. There were claims that gigantic
vegetables cabbages, cucumbers, tomatoes, and millions of pounds of potatoes and huge volumes
of grain had been produced. Because of the falsely exaggerated harvest, much of the grain was
diverted from rural to urban areas. It was kept in storage or

Ted Bundy Vs Ted Bundy
Serial killers are one of the biggest mysteries to the rest of humanity. The way they think and act
is terrifying but also fascinating because other people don t think in the same way. So when we
see someone so sadistic and emotionally detached we want to know more about them. We want to
know what their childhood was like, if something happened in the early development of their lives
or if they were just wired that way from birth. Two of the most popular serial killers are Ted Bundy
and Jeffrey Dahmer. They both started killing people in their young adulthood, progressively
becoming more and more addicted to the thrill it gave them leading up to their arrests later in
life. However, they had very different home lives and experiences that lead to their fates.
Childhood and adolescence tend to play a huge role in the way people turn out as adults, so it s
one of the first things people look back at when someone turns out to be any kind of killer. Jeffrey
Dahmer is said to have had a pretty normal childhood though, according to his father, he had an
unusual interest in the bodies of dead animals and didn t show the same kinds of emotions as other
children ( All About Jeffrey Dahmer , 2011). As he developed into adolescence his fascination with
dead animals only became more disturbing as he started examining and dissecting the carcasses. He
withdrew himself from society and turning to heavy alcoholism. His drinking problem stayed with
him throughout his high school career

This section will provide the summary of the benchmarks used in our performance evaluations.
Also, the proposed main and sub functions for PaaS evaluations will be presented. Lastly, the AHP
and LSP methods will be introduced to statistically evaluate the different cloud computing
platforms, such as Cloud Foundry, Heroku, and OpenShift.
3.1. Benchmarks
There are several benchmarking concepts in the IT sector for decades. For computing power
performance benchmarking, the Whetstone Benchmarking algorithm have been used. It is adopted
by sector leaders for several decades. Whetstone algorithm was originally based on floating
operations, like many of the other benchmarking algorithms, such as Linpack, LM suite, HPCC.
However, in time, new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the second type, each query s scope was one hundred (100) records, and the connection,
statement and result set are again released and created for each of these queries. The single record
queries represent database operations like transactions targeting single records in tables. The
queries targeting one hundred (100) records represent bulk operations like the jobs running at the
end of day operations.
For main memory performance benchmarking, Stream benchmark algorithm is used. This
algorithm measures the sustainable real world bandwidth as real users faced, not the theoretical
peak values. It is a widely known and applied algorithm in memory bandwidth performance tests
[27]. The Stream algorithm is also a synthetic benchmark which creates synthetic workloads, not
the real world workloads. The benchmark measures the bandwidth performance by four long
vector / matrix operations, like copy , scale , add , and triad (combination of other three). The
algorithm assigns one of the arrays to another in order to measure the copy operation time and
bandwidth. For scale operation, it multiplies the elements of an array by a scalar value. In add
operation, it adds the elements of an array to the elements of another array and assigns the results
to a third array. Triad does the calculations of the three operations all together (copy, scale, and
add). In our evaluations, we have used the average of the results for these four

Background Of International Investment Protection
I.Background to International Investment Protection During industrialisation, Western European
Countries and United States, which has huge capital surplus, started investing massively in less
developed countries in the form of Foreign Direct Investment. There was obviously an imbalance of
power between the investing countries and the host countries at that time. The investing countries
expected that their investment and property be protected and in case they suffered any injury or
incurred any loss, the host country has to compensate else the former had all the power to make
their life uncomfortable. The investors could even seek help from their government to obtain the

The doctrine was adopted mainly by Latin American countries and was also incorporated in the
Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and navigation. However resolving international commercial
disputes via litigation by national courts entailed many complications. For instance host state may
come up with legislations or policies which may affect the business and prevent the investor from
getting any remedy for damages suffered; the country may not have strong and update laws to
protect the investments. Also the adversarial nature of the litigation may not help to maintain good
business relationship. As such arbitration which is consensual, flexible, informal, binding and
enforceable can be considered as a better form of dispute resolution. The Convention on Peaceful
Resolution of International Dispute signed in 1907 provided for conclusion of Bilateral Arbitration
Treaties however there was no direct cause of action by the foreign national which had suffered
damages. In 1965 there was a major reform by the creation of ICSID mechanism after the
conclusion of Washington Convention. As a result many states entered into Bilateral Investment
Treaties BITS to promote and protect investment. As per the treaties disputes were submitted to
International arbitration which were completely delocalised and Investors could seek remedy

Life And Death Among The Xerox People Summary
An analysis of Cabral s Life and Death Among the Xerox People: Progression of Technology and
Mechanized Life
Olga Cabral s, Life and Death Among the Xerox People is an extended metaphor aiming to make
relevant the effects of technological progress in society. Cabral asserts a new perspective for the
audience, using the title as a connection between xerox (a copying process) and the people in the
poem. Historically, the Xerox corporation began in the 1960s and has had success in progressing
their copy machine and being a role model to other companies by introducing diversified labor. The
scheme of the poem, however, unfolds through a comparison to the death penalty. In the 1960s, the
death penalty became a topic worthy of discussion, as people began questioning the government s
role in deciding the rights of citizens. Olga Cabral references both of these civil movement
components throughout the poem, Life and Death Among the Xerox People , to portray how
society may seem to be progressing through technology, but in fact, is making its way back down
the timeline of societal progression, step by step.
The hierarchy Cabral describes in the poem tends to see the workers, but not as people.
Immediately as it begins, the audience gets an insight of the wrong office (1) being described
when Cabral writes, not a soul knew me / but they said: Sit Down (3 4). The authority developed

The Instrumentalist Theory Of Ethnic Conflict In Aceh
For instrumentalists, resource, especial the scarce resource, always being an important factor of
ethnic conflicts. Lake and Rothchild stand on the strand of rational choice, they assume that
scarce resources related to the collective fear of the future, and politics are means for groups to
control the access to scarce resources. For instrumentalists, ethnic identity is not valuable in and
of itself, it is basically a mask for a core of real interests (Varshney 2009, 288). The case of conflicts
in Acehapproave this assertion that competition for resources typically lies at the heart of ethnic
conflict. Therefore, this short answer will be two fold: first, a critical understanding of
instrumantalism will be provided in order to illustrate why resources are important? Second, a case
of Aceh will be explained along with the instrumentalism.
In the article Containing Fear: The Origins and Management of Ethnic Conflict, Lake and
Rothchild sited that the intense ethnic conflict is most often caused by collective fear of the future
(Lake and Rothchild 1996, 41). Their explanatory framework is rational choice oriented which
based on the instrumentalist theory of ethnic conflict. For instrumentalists, ethnicity mask a deeper
core of interests (Varshney 2009, 282). Therefore, along with ethnic lines, all scarce resourses
arouse competition and struggles between individuals as well as organized ethnic groups (Lake and
Rothchild 1996, 44 45), and such competition movements can only

Ergotism, The Causes Of The Salem Witch Trials
The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of men and women accused of
witchcraft in Massachusetts starting in the winter of 1691 1692. The last of the trials were held
in January of 1693. Several hundreds of men and women were accused and by the end of 1692, 19
men and women had been put to death for their actions as if the devil were in Salem. Ergotismwas
the cause of the Salem Witch Trials. Ergot, which grows on the rye crop, when eaten the fungus can
cause symptoms that the early colonists considered to be witchcraft. Symptoms of ergotism were
compared to those of lysergic acid diethylamide(LSD) and were found very similar to the symptoms
of hysteria. The climate that the rye grows in either promotes or demotes the growth of the fungus.
Ergot infects plants when they are young and causes cells to divide and enlarge, which creates large
brown sclerotia. Sclerotia are hard resting structures that allow the fungus to survive in the harshest
conditions (Volk). Ergotism is a condition that starts to exist because of ergotamines, which are
substances that are produced due to a fungal infection of grains. Ergotamines cause symptoms that
include hallucinations, gastrointestinal discomfort, a burning sensation in limbs and extremities,
and dry gangrene, which is the falling away of dead or dying body tissue due to lack of blood
flow. At one point in time, ergot was used as medicine. Women would use it to treat excessive

Progressives knew of the terrible conditions that many laborers were going through in factories
and workplaces across America, and they rose up to the challenge of fighting against them. While
Progressives reformers worked for change in many different areas, the improvement of society was
one of their most important goals. In terms of society, Progressive reformers wanted to focus on
three specific areas. These areas were education, sanitation in tenements or housing, and
conservation of the environment (heritage.org). Progressives wanted education to be based on
hands on learning, and that experience is the best teacher (Hayes). John Dewey and some others
created a form of Progressive education that was based on teaching young kids how to live along
with other knowledge (Hayes). Sanitation for many of the crowded tenements in urban areas was
lacking (Caswell). Muckraker Jacob Riis looked to change this and with the publishing of his book
How the Other Half Lives (1890), New York and some other states began to pass building safety
codes such as the New York State Tenement Housing Act (Caswell). The conservation movement
that commenced because of the Progressive party would not have been successful without

Narrative Essay About Duck Camp
Initially, when I first visited Tarleton State University, all I saw was men wearing cowboy hats,
jeans, and boots, but as I walked around campus more with my dad, I started to see more
diversity within the students on campus. As my dad and I walked around campus looking like we
don t belong, a girl pointed us in the right direction to find Heritage. We spoke to a residential
leader who kindly showed us around the dorm and told us how amazing the campusis. From that
second forward, I had started to fall in lovewith Tarleton. Orientation soon approached and
introduced me to Duck Camp. When I originally heard what Duck camp was about, teaching the
heritage and traditions of Tarleton, I was exhilarated to leave that second to learn, socialize, and
start my transition from high school to college. Before Duck Camp arrived, one of my TTMs,
Wacey Horton, sent me a text saying he will be my daddy duck for Duck Camp one. To be
completely honest, I was a little weirded out when I saw him say daddy duck but it made me
laugh and all the more excited for Duck Camp. Wacey made my Duck Camp experience
something I will never forget for the rest of my life; he made it fun, introduced all of us to new
people, established friendships between all of us, and has brought me entirely out of my shell I
had enclosed myself in during high school. Wacey taught me how to have more confidence, to

Essay Characterization in The Good Soldier
In The Good Soldier, Ford Maddox Ford does not fully develop any of the characters. The reader
is intended to use the narrator Dowell s disconnected and inaccurate impressions to build a more
complete version of who the characters are, as well as form a more accurate view of what
actually happens with the sad affair (Ford 9) of Dowell s pathetic life. This use of a single
character s various perceptions creates a work that follows the style of literary impressionism,
which, to some extent, should be only a series of personal impressions that culminates in the
portrayal of reality as a subjective experience (van Gunsteren 239). This very subjectivity of reality
is clearly evident in Dowell s perception of other people and events.... Show more content on

He also says that her heart had made him lead the life of the sedulous, strained nurse (13),
constantly needing to watch her and protect her from anything that might possibly excite her or

irritating, Dowell does not seem to have any objection to the role Florence has given him, even
when he later realizes that she had faked her heart condition to manipulate him. For the most
part, Florence even inspires some degree of pity in him, and she often becomes poor dear
Florence (12) in his mind. That he is capable of pity for such a manipulative person is only
explained by his oblivious nature. This particular version of Florence shows the full extent of
his lack of understanding as he attempts to explain things to himself. It also shows the degree of
his gullibility. Dowell also describes Florence as weak and simple minded, saying that she was
bright and she danced (17). This portrays Florence as an essentially superficial person. However,
this superficiality does not really say anything directly about Florence, but illustrates what
Thomas C. Moser phrases as Dowell s conviction of the meaninglessness of existence (Moser 354).

Some polygons of different kinds
In geometry a polygon ( /Л€pЙ’lЙ ЄЙЎЙ’n/) is a flat shape consisting of straight lines that are
joined to form a closed chain or circuit.
A polygon is traditionally a plane figure that is bounded by a closed path, composed of a finite
sequence of straight line segments (i.e., by a closed polygonal chain). These segments are called
its edges or sides, and the points where two edges meet are the polygon s vertices (singular:
vertex) or corners. An n gon is a polygon with n sides. The interior of the polygon is sometimes
called its body. A polygon is a 2 dimensional example of the more general ... Show more content on

The polygon is also equilateral. * Tangential: all sides are tangent to an inscribed circle. *
Regular: A polygon is regular if it is both cyclic and equilateral. A non convex regular polygon is
called a regular star polygon.
Miscellaneous
* Rectilinear: a polygon whose sides meet at right angles, i.e., all its interior angles are 90 or 270
degrees. * Monotone with respect to a given line L, if every line orthogonal to L intersects the
polygon not more than twice.
Properties
Euclidean geometry is assumed throughout.
Angles
Any polygon, regular or irregular, self intersecting or simple, has as many corners as it has sides.
Each corner has several angles. The two most important ones are: * Interior angle The sum of the
interior angles of a simple n gon is (n в€’ 2)П Ђ radians or (n в€’ 2)180 degrees. This is because
any simple n gon can be considered to be made up of (n в€’ 2) triangles, each of which has an angle
sum of П Ђ radians or 180 degrees. The measure of any interior angle of a convex regular n gon is
radians or degrees. The interior angles of regular star polygons were first studied by Poinsot, in
the same paper in which he describes the four regular star polyhedra. * Exterior angle Tracing
around a convex n gon, the angle turned at a corner is the exterior or external angle. Tracing all the
way around the polygon makes one full turn, so the sum of the exterior angles must be

Such colonies had passed legislation that inhibited the African slaves from practicing entitlements
such as freedom of association and movement.
The middle colonies like New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania also had laws that
encouraged the slave trade and robbed the African slaves of their fundamental rights. Such laws
were structuredspecifically for the African slaves. For instance, in New York, a slave discovered
40 miles North of Albany was considered to be fleeing to Canada and could be killedif two

The Jim Crow Laws In The Black By Richard Wright
In order to grasp a better understanding of the author s craft, the student includes a portion of the
author s background. This may enable the student to further acknowledge the author s purpose
throughout the essay. Richard Wright was born on September 4, 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi and
from the moment he was born, his life consisted of various struggles. He came to a world that
refused to accept him on the basis of his skin color. Growing up African American( Black ) was
already hard enough, but growing up Black and in the South was practically a death sentence.
Americans were strictly enforcing the Jim Crow Laws in the South and the Jim Crow Laws
created a barrier between the Blacks and the Whites (Caucasian). These laws were instituted by
Southerners after the Civil War because the southern lawmakers were unhappy that they had lost
the war and did not want slavery to completely end. The Whites refused to see Blacks as socially
equal. The Jim Crow Laws made Blacks inferior to the Whites in every situation. Therefore, any
relationship between the Blacks and the Whites that purposed the slightest amount of equality
among them, would not be tolerated and was punishable by law. For instance, a Black man could
never offer to shake hands with a White male because it challenged the social equality between
them. Additionally, a Black person could not eat with a White person, if this is the case, there
would be a physical barrier between them. Wright s Native Son depicts how the

Likewise the Folklore Films are made and their existence is a protean one, adapting to time and
place tales that embody artistic and moral energies that direct the trajectory of change. In the tales
we can perceive the people s motivations and sources of psychology renewal, which lead to new
ways of living.
Folk literature also known as verbal art or expressive literature is a broad genre of folklore which
is always concerned with the literary traditions handed down by word of mouth from generation to
generation. Folk literature is still popular among the Khasis and is treated as an important piece of
their tradition. Folk literature includes both narrative and non narrative forms, where narrative is
found both in prose and in verse forms.
In Meghalaya, there are a few folklore narratives, which have been adapted and reconstructed
into films. The first folklore film to be made in Khasi was Manik Raitong or Manik the
Wretched . The story of U Manik Raitong is found in several renditions in prose, poetry and
drama. This film is based on a popular legend which can be found in Nongkynrih (2007), Esther
Syiem Nehu Journal (2003) , Bijoya Sawian in the Muse India (2005), and P. R. T. Gurdon The

Unraveling Bolero Song Analysis
The Unraveling Bolero podcast was about Anne Adams who was once a cell biologist in cancer
research, and Maurice Ravel a composer. Born 65 years apart, Adams and Ravel were affected
by the same disease, Frontotemporal Dementia (Abumrad). Frontotemporal dementia involves
progressive nerve cell loss (Frontotemporal Dementia). After Anne Adams son was in a serious
car accident, she decided to stay home and help him recover. Once he was healed and walking
again, she decided to quite cancer research, and pick up painting. She had not painted since high
school, and now she was suddenly a full time artist. She would paint houses and buildings, then
strawberries, and many things in a repetitious way. She would paint the same theme for a while,
and then change. She became obsessed with painting, and sold her art. Then, she heard Bolero,
she could not stop listening to it. She painted it, every note was a color, and the size of each note s
colored rectangle depended on the volume of the note. She called it Unraveling Bolero. Six years
after this painting, everything changed. Adams started losing memory, and the ability to speak. She
was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia, and participated in a study on the disease and the
University of California San Francisco. Adams eventually became paralyzed... Show more content

How Youth Online Culture Is Perceived
How Youth Online Culture Is Perceived
The impact of online culture on youth is hugely significant in today s society. Youth of today, all
around the world, have grown up in the midst of rapid technological development. It now plays a
part in the social, work, leisure, and private spheres of people s lives. Adults perceive youth
interactions online as negative, harming their ability to develop and function in the adult world.
Youth perceive their involvement in online culture quite differently, seeing it as a way to keep
socially connected, express themselves, and participate in society. Youth do not need to change
their behaviours to suit adult s perceptions, but rather, adults and youth need to be more
understanding of the other s views.
Adult concepts regarding youth online culture are mostly negative and result from the moral panic
of current society promoted by the media. Gray s blog article (2014) draws attention to and
challenges stereotypical views that adults hold about youth online. Firstly, that youth are simply
wasting time on the internet when they could be doing school work, going out, or being active.
Secondly, that it is socially isolating, preventing youth from going out and physically interacting
with peers in person. Thirdly, that youth do not understand the concepts of privacy and safety
online and that they will inevitably regret sharing some information, once they have reached
adulthood. It is also argued that youth should adjust their behaviours to

as well as power plants for electric and hybrid cars. As new technologies develop, there is more of a
need for specialized technicians to diagnose and repair vehicles with hi tech systems.
Due to a shortage of highly skilled automotive technicians, unparalleled opportunities are in store
for specialized automotive technicians to work and develop within the automotive repair field.
Employment shortages in other fields in some cases have been outsourced, but automotive repair is
one that can t be outsourced. Opportunities to work with dealers and repair facilities should be
readily available for many years to come for a specialized automotive technician with the proper
training and certification!
One doesn t necessarily have to be a graduate or a postgraduate in order to work as a general
automotive technician. You can begin your career during high school by joining the training
programs popularly offered to students. It will give you a basic know how about cars, their parts
and systems. Therefore, by the time you graduate high school, you may already be earning money
and will be skilled enough to start working at a larger company that will present more opportunity.

Monae s Metropolis Saga
Monae s Metropolis Saga uses the cyborg as a metaphor for the oppressed, using cyborg bodies
as a stand in for black bodies and consequently drawing connections between the state of
blackness and the state of being cyborg. Monae herself speaks of her decision to choose an
android because the android to [her] represents the other in our society. (Kot 1) This is made
specific to blackness when, in the Metropolis Saga, Cindi time travels to the 20th and 21st centuries
and is reborn as Janelle Monae, becoming black rebels throughout history; accordingly, the line
between cyborgontology and black ontology is blurred as she jumps between the two. Monae,
additionally, describes cyborgs as neon slaves, electric savages, making clear ties between... Show

If for Monae, black bodies are cyborg bodies, cyborg bodies have existed throughout history and
cannot be situated solely in the future. Consequently, Metropolis as a city centered around Cindi s
black cyborg body cannot be temporally alienated from history, and must reckon with it. More than
that, though, Metropolis itself is not just a vision of the future but of the past, a transhistorical
metaphor of oppression and liberation. This differs from traditional science fiction cyborg
representations because for Haraway and many others, the cyborg exists within a future world.
However, for Monae, the cyborg has always existed in the form of black bodies, and the science
fiction world serves only to illuminate this. Accordingly, the transhistoricality is the only way that
a cyborg can be raced and allows a raced cyborg to recognize and grapple with the dark history
that birthed it for Cindi, this means time traveling to literally participate in, change, and solve her
history. Perhaps this is best expressed by the name of Monae s upcoming album, presumably
containing the last two suites of the Metropolis Saga, Dirty Computer. The computer is the android;
however, the android retains its dirt, the dirt being the dark and dirty history of racializations and
blackness her cyborg refuses to be pristine and reject that history, instead

Tim Burton s Work As A Director
Tim Burton is well known for his work as a director. He has been nominated for several awards.
Among these are; two Oscars, one Golden Globe, five Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and
Horror Films, and several Hugo Awards (Tim Burton Awards). Besides being a director of many
of Hollywood s greatest films, he is also an accomplished illustrator, painter, screenwriter, and
producer. From his early days at The California Institute of Arts, to his current film projects,
Burton has always had an ability to transfer his perceptions in to a visual medium. His visual
style is often a mix of fantasy, Gothic, and horror (Tim Burton Bio A E). Timothy Walter Burton
was born in the shadow of the Hollywood Hills in Burbank, California, on August 25, 1958. He
grew up the son of seemingly distant parents who were also a bit odd. His father, who was
injured early in his career as a professional baseball player, worked for the City of Burbank Sports
Department. His mother owned a cat themed gift shop (for cats) called Cats Plus. Burton s room
had two large windows that overlooked the yard, but his parents boarded them up (Pringle). My
parents covered the windows in my bedroom for insulation, with a little slit at the top to let in
light. I ve always related to Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote several stories about being buried alive. I
always felt a dark unhappiness permeating the air in their house (Fraga 167). Oddly enough, one of
the staples of his films, there is usually an overly

Lord Byron Tone
The poem Darkness by Lord Byron (George Gordon) talks about how the world is going to shut
down and the struggles they go through. The author talks about nature, social, and of course
supernatural elements. This poem was written during the Romanism period. He starts off with a
dream about the world shutting off. It s reality but it is actually a dream, more like a vision. The
author swift s through the ways they are struggling and how they are hoping for light to restore.
The author s depressing tone overshadows the struggles that they re going through. In line one, the
speaker immediately begins with I had a dream, which was not all a dream (Byron). In this quote
he is bringing doubt on what s next to come. He is mixing reality... Show more content on

Love was an important key in humans and without love there s no humanity. Even dogs turned
against their owners, except for one loyal dog. He stayed with his owner even after he had died.
This comes to show how desperate people and even animals were. Byron even states in the poem
that they all became enemies. Little by little the earth became more and more empty to the point
where there was nothing left but pure darkness and silence. The ocean was dead. The wind and
water stayed completely still because the Moon nor the Sun could go past the

Bad Role Models
Police data published by Daily Mail on the Internet, provides evidence suggesting that one crime
is committed every five seconds in the United States of America. Resulting in seventeen
thousand two hundred eight crimes per day. This shocking number evidently demonstrates that
on average too many crimes are committed everyday, and while this data is a reliable source
that can be relied on to give people an idea of how many crimes are committed everyday on
average; it fails in informing us on the reasons or in what situation the criminals were in to have
to be in a position to break the law. Many criminals are thought to be bad people who do things
just because they are bad, but many times not being a criminal for many people is inevitable....

I believe that people who have necessities in life have no choice than to do anything to no longer
have those necessities. Many people grow up not having anything going towards their way say
they end up getting involved in gangs, and doing bad things breaking the law everyday. But
what happens when you are the head of the family and you re not putting food on the table and
the only way out of that is by selling drugs? Everyone generally assumes that people in jail, or
prison had something to do with drugs. I m not saying that everyone is in a correctional facility
because of drugs, but a big percentage of the people in jail in ghetto places are because of drugs,
and why is that? Because drugs are the easiest way of getting out of being poor, or at least that
what people who sell them think. When a teenager is arrested because of possession of drugs in
a ghetto town, it s not very alarming because we all expect that to happen, but what happens
when a middle age white man who has never had any problems with the law is arrested for the
same reason? That s when we start asking questions and learn the truth of why people act in such
ways. The person known as the head of the family is usually always thought to be the leader of
the family. The leader of the family has responsibilities, and one of them is to provide for the
family, and to protect them. Many family leaders have always been very

Radical Reconstruction Research Paper
No one with an ounce of sanity would rejoice at being a racist. Over time, it has become ingrained
in American culture to accept and be proud of the many differences among people. However, about
130 years ago, African Americans were subject to harsh segregation policies as a result of racial
discrimination. In a postbellum America, the Union desperately attempted to reform the former
Confederate States, utilizing Reconstruction policies that established a new political and societal
atmosphere. A major component of this era, the Radical Reconstruction, aimed at initiating and
enforcing equality toward African Americans. Nonetheless, the rash treatment of African
Americans persisted and evolved from traditional slavery to discriminative policies... Show more

Black Codes in the South placed numerous restriction on African Americans, which gave them
second class citizenship, even with the Civil Rights Act of 1866 that ensured citizenship for African
American men. Race Riots on the streets were a method for southern whites to publicly protest
against Reconstruction policies and resulted in the mass murder of numerous African Americans in
bloody brawls fueled by the resentment of equality that many demonstrated. The Ku Klux Klan,
comprised of prejudiced whites who wanted to subvert Reconstruction policies and maintain a
stigma of anti equality, performed acts of violence by deliberately targeting and killing African
Americans, forcing them to live in fear of being murdered. While the intention of the
Reconstruction was to reform the white supremacy in the South and introduce equality, the policies
passed did more harm than good by increasing racial prejudice through the growing cloud of anti
African American sentiments looming over Southern society. The people of modern society have
come a long way from the racial divide between races that was prevalent during the Reconstruction
Era, mitigating the prevalence of proud racists among the general

Persuasive Essay On Welfare
Welfare in the America is the government s attempt to help out the citizens that were and are
struggling financially in life. They provide cash and other benefits to people who are deemed
necessary of assistance. The idea behind the system is very good, it s to help people get back on
their feet so they can be a productive member of society. This includes finding work, providing
for a family, and maybe even giving back to the community. The problem is that there are a lot of
holes that are easily taken advantage of in the current system. It has gotten to the point where some
people today even call it a broken system. There a few simple changes that I think could definitely
make a big difference.
For starters, I think that it would be a good idea to occasionally drug test people that receive
welfare benefits. Not that it is really any of our business to know about that, but I do think that
is is unfair of people to apply for welfare and then spend all of that money on drugs and even
alcohol. I would assume that there is probably a law protecting this from happening, but if you
need welfare then you should put the money to good use. Spending the money on drugs is
cheating the system, and is hurting our society much more than it is helping it. I think that is one
big hole in the system that needs to be addressed in one way or another. Even if it not an easy fix,
I think that is would be worth looking into a little deeper. I m sure that this option has been
evaluated at some
