Sermon
Eph 6:4
Parenting by Grace pt.1
Introduction
WHY ARE WE HERE?
We are here to lead people in a
growing relationship with Jesus
Christ.
Blessed is the man who walks not in
the counsel of the wicked, nor stands
in the way of sinners, nor sits in the
seat of scoffers; but his delight is in
the law of the LORD, and on his law
he meditates day and night. He is
like a tree planted by streams of
water that yields its fruit in its
season, and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers
The wicked are not so, but are like
chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand
in the judgment, nor sinners in the
congregation of the righteous; for the
LORD knows the way of the
righteous, but the way of the wicked
will perish. (Psalm 1 ESV)

PERSONAL APPLICATION:
Which of those words, or traits, or
habits needs to grow in your life
this year?
Fathers, do not provoke your
children to anger, but bring them
up in the discipline and
instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4 )
Fathers, do not provoke your
children, lest they become
discouraged. (Colossians 3:21 ESV)
“Bring Them Up In The Discipline
And Admonition Of The Lord”
The word for 'discipline / nurture' is
the word for child training.
Beware of thinking that grace means
not caring about right or wrong or
only being permissive.
…AND ADMONITION OF THE
LORD
HOW DOES GOD discipline or
raise his children? What is the
environment He creates?
GRACE
THE LAW ORIENTED HOME / Life
1. I think that my rules, my wise
parenting, and my training will
produce godly children.
2. I am inconsistent. (at times demand
perfection, other times overlook
disobedience)
3. I correct my family as if I were a
perfect person.
4. I “nag” more than I carefully
discipline.
5. The outward behavior of my
children is very important.
6. There are many rules in my home.
7. I am depressed when I think I've
failed.
8. I deal with problems out of guilt
9. I make quick judgments before
listening to get all the facts.
10. If my children suffer, it must prove
that I have done something wrong.
11. I wonder if I am “using my
children” to make me look like a
good parent and Christian.
12. I fear that my children may be
beginning to despise me and my
rules
HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND HEAL A
CLOSED SPIRIT
-Avoids communication and contact
whereas previously there was both.
-Argumentative and resistant
-Contrary to what you like or want
-Withdrawn
-Seeks friends opposite to those you
would want for him/ her
-Disrespectful language
-Drug use
-Sexually permissive
-Run away
TO REOPEN A CHILD’S SPIRIT
-Become tender hearted
-Increase understanding
-Recognize the offense – action or
attitude
-Attempt to give an affectionate touch
-Seek forgiveness
CONSIDER…
I know that I cannot change the
members of my family by my
harsh and repeated corrections.
DOES THIS SUGGESTION SEEM
SIMPLISTIC—that when YOU are
changed by the Gospel it has a
powerful effect on the people
around you?
People will be drawn to Christ when
he shows Himself to them —
through you
Jesus was that one PERFECTLY
HUMBLE Christian.
His humility outdoes anything that we
could ever IMAGINE.
