I ntroduction The koala, an iconic Australian marsupial. Cultural significance to Aboriginal Australians .

Characteristics Scientific name ( Phascolarctos cinerus ). Marsupial animal. Arboreal animal. Antisocial. Display sexual dimorphism.

Characteristics Lifespan is between 10 to 12 years. Sleep 20 hours a day. Mature male weighs between 8-14kg Mature female weighs between 6-11kg

Koala Habitat and Distribution

Diet and Behavior Koalas feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves. However , eucalyptus leaves are low in nutrients. Breeding typically starts at two to four years of age. Koala child stays in mother’s pouch for   6 months . At  12 months, the child reaches independence.

Threats to Koalas Historically, koalas were heavily hunted. Deforestation  for agricultural and urban development. Spread of the deadly koala Chlamydia disease. Traffic strikes. D og attacks.

Koala E ndangered Status Koala has officially classified as endangered in 2022. Population of 92000 in wild. Population is halved compared to 2001-2021.

Conservation Efforts and Organizations WWF-Australia prioritizes the protection of koalas. The Australian Conservation Foundation. National Geographic spotlights initiatives. The NSW Environment and Heritage department.

Research and Initiatives R esearch on habitat assessment and Koala health monitoring. I nitiatives for habitat restoration and assisted gene flow.
