Lesson #2 Biodiversity - Student continue to learn about population sampling and learn about Frequency, Species Composition, Diversity, and Biodiversity. Students also learn about limiting factors in a population. Next is an amazing story about the Lord Howe Stick Insect who is came back from the brink of extinction. The story is amazing and Balls Pyramid is spectacular. A video and internet link are provided and students record info in their work bundle. Students then play biodiversity Jenga. Student 's learn how the ecosystem can collapse when enough species have been removed. The importance of biodiversity is covered in a series of slides. A video concludes in Tazmania about native forestry vs. plantation forestry. Students record everything as they follow along chronologically in their work bundle.
Areas of Focus within this Biodiversity, Importance of Biodiversity, Ways to maintain biodiversity.

This is a Lord Howe stick insect ( Dryococelus australis )
This is a Lord Howe stick insect ( Dryococelus australis ) The Lord Howe Stick Insect was thought to be extinct for 80 years, after the population living on Lord Howe Island in Australia was wiped out by rats in 1920.
However, on Ball’s Pyramid, a narrow rock formation 13 miles from Lord Howe Island, scientists found surviving stick insects. They don’t know how they got to Ball’s Pyramid or how they managed to survive. However, on Ball’s Pyramid, a narrow rock formation 13 miles from Lord Howe Island, scientists found surviving stick insects. They don’t know how they got to Ball’s Pyramid or how they managed to survive. To help maintain biodiversity, the scientists went through a lot of effort to keep the insects alive and to increase the population. All of the concepts below connect to biodiversity.
How can we maintain biodiversity?
Why should we maintain biodiversity?
Why should we maintain biodiversity? Main Idea and Topic Sentence: It should be strong and clear. How can we maintain biodiversity? Supporting Details: Your paragraph should have three supporting details and relate to your main idea / topic sentence. Concluding Sentence. Your concluding sentence is connected to the topic sentence and does not include new details. A.) Generation of soils and maintenance of soil quality. B.) Maintenance of air quality. C.) Maintenance of water quality. D.) Pest Control E.) Detoxification and decomposition of wastes. F.) Pollination and crop production. G.) Increase in food security. H.) Provision of health care (Medicines). I.) Income generation J.) Spiritual / cultural value.
Why should we maintain biodiversity?
Why should we maintain biodiversity? Topic Supporting Details Concluding Sentence
Why should we maintain biodiversity? Maintaining biodiversity is important to our very survival. Biodiversity helps maintain the valuable and life sustaining systems on our planet. Clean air, clean water, food security, and pest control are all improved with increased biodiversity. When species are removed from an ecosystem, the stability of the entire ecosystem can be threatened. It is important to remember that we are a part of the ecosystem, and our actions, and how we maintain biodiversity matters. Topic Supporting Details Concluding Sentence

Plantation Forestry vs. Regeneration Forestry + + - - Positives Positives Negatives Negatives Write this down
Video Link! (Optional) Plantation Forestry vs. Native Regeneration Forestry (Tasmania) Pay attention each side of the story. Which is better to maintain biodiversity? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vplUH8A_wE
Plantation Forestry vs. Regeneration Forestry + + - - Positives Positives Negatives Negatives -Grow 4 to 5 times faster than native regenerative forest. $ -More biodiversity than farmland. -All the wood is useable. -Species are not displaced -More biodiversity -Premium wood, better wood and larger in size. -Stores more carbon, ecologically friendly
