This is the Introductory Lesson to the Biogeochemical Cycles Unit. This lesson is a introduction to the biogeochemical Cycles. The large word biogeochemical cycles is broken down in bio=life, geo=earth, cycle=to repeat. the big idea that the cycles go form the living to the non-living world is addressed. the earths spheres are introduced with the cycling of matter (biogeochemical cycles) and energy. the lesson then gets use headed toward the water cycle. A photo of the arctic is shown and asks the students why this photo is so special. In the photo, water can be seen as a solid, liquid, and gas which is unique to planet earth in the solar system. Solids, liquids, and gases are explained at a molecular level and students follow along in their work bundle step by step. They then learn about phase change and complete another step by step diagram that helps introduce them to evaporation, condensation, and phase change. Several video links and question and answer slides are provided.
