CHROMOSOMES Prepared B y : Presented By: ARLEN S. GATPO FERNANDO L. ZAMORA Public School District Supervisor Master Teacher I N ational Capital Region, Division of Manila Naval School of Fisheries, SDO- Biliran CROSS-SPECIALIZATION TRAINING FOR GRADES 7-10 SCIENCE TEACHERS SCIENCE DOMAIN: LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT

Objectives At the end of the session , the participants should be able to: d escribe the structure of chromosomes; i dentify the role of chromosomes in heredity; and arrange the chromosomes based on their size, bands and color.

Pre-Activity PROCEDURE Complete the poem in order to answer the hidden word by s upplying the missing letters Based on the poem, say something about the chromosomes.

Chromatid and Chromosomes

Chromatid and Sister chromatids

TEDDY CHROMO Activity 1 Model of Chromosomes

Objective: Describe the structure of chromosomes. Materials: socks, remnants, crumpled paper, rubber band Procedure: Create or make a model of chromosomes out of the materials provided.( 10 minutes)

BUHAY CHROMOSOMES Activity 2

Objectives: Simulate duplication / replication of chromosomes . (5 minutes) Procedures: Participants will look for a chromatid with similar colors, band and size. Using rubber band, bind the two teddy chromatids together.

Guide Questions: How did you come up with your pairing? What are the things you need to consider in looking for a sister chromatids? In what stage of cell cycle does replication of chromatids take place? What is the purpose of rubber band? What does it represents?

CHROMOSOMES… Activity 3 SIMON SAYS

Procedure: Simulate the appearance of chromosomes during Meiosis. (30 minutes) On the command of the facilitator the participants will simulate events in Meiosis.

Command (Simon says…) Event Description Metaphase Metaphase stage of Mitosis The chromosomes are aligned Anaphase Anaphase stage of Mitosis The sister chromatid are pulled apart Prophase 1 Prophase 1 of Meiosis Pairing of chromosomes Metaphase 1 Metaphase 1 of Meiosis Homologous chromosomes are aligned in the equator Anaphase 1 Anaphase 1 of Meiosis Chromosomes are pulled apart toward opposite poles

Guide Questions: Why is replication necessary ? What is the role of chromosomes in variation of traits and transfer of traits?

Chromosomes are thread-like structure found in the nuclei of both animal and plant cells. Chromosomes are carrier of hereditary traits, located inside the nucleus of the cell. Sister chromatids are fastened together by small structure called centromere. Sister chromatid is one of two attached members of duplicated eukaryotic Chromosomes. Locus in genetics is a fixed position of gene. (genetic marker)

Arrange the chromosomes based on the size, color and bands.

Guide Questions: How did you come up with your arrangement? What did you noticed about the arrangement?

“It is not the chromosome bands nor your genetic make-up... It’s what you always do that defines you ”. AS Gatpo, 2018
