Biotechnology and Society
What is Biotechnology Biotechnology is an integrated Science based on life Science. It uses living organisms (or biological tissue, cells or other components) to design and construct new material or new species.
The development of modern biotechnology has enriched people's lives, opened up new prospects for the development of products, and promoted the development of humankind. But Biotechnology also brings potential risks that cannot be ignored. For example, genetic weapons may put humankind at risk. In order for biotechnology to benefit mankind, the basic ethics of biotechnology should be clarified.
Advantages of Biotechnology (Medical) genetic testing, genetic prevention, genetic therapy, genetic vaccines, cell, tissue and organ repair. Living organism can be reproduced asexually. G enetic modification can improve treatment effect and enhance human immune system, which will extend human life span.
Advantages of Biotechnology (Agricultural) Genetic engineering can increase productivity of agricultural products. Genetic engineering can improve the quality of the agricultural products, such as resistance to pests, which can decrease the usage of pesticide.
Advantages of Biotechnology (Industrial) Scientists can use biotechnology to develop environment-friendly, or special property products. These products can be used in medical or industrial fields. Biotechnology can erase the harmful chemical or component in food.
Advantages of Biotechnology (environmental protection) Biotechnology can be used to detect pollution, treat and detoxify industrial waste, and cleaning in industrial process.
Disadvantage of Biotechnology (military) The development of genetic engineering and other biological technology, scientists can rearrange the DAN molecules to produce toxins or modify micro-organisms. This can be used as biological weapons.
Jurassic Park—What is the problem? Dr. Hammond took a mosquito stuck in an amber and extracted the dinosaur’s blood from the mosquito. He used the blood to extract the dinosaur’s DNA and replicated it. He reproduced the dinosaurs by using the DNA and built a park with the theme of dinosaurs At the end, the part lost control of the dinosaurs and became a disaster.
So what is the problem of Jurassic Park?
Ethical principles in Biotechnology These are the principles we should consider when we use biotechnology. People oriented Autonomy Safety Fairness
People oriented Human is the main part of the society, it should not be easily duplicated, otherwise human life will not be respected or appreciated. The development of biotechnology must respect human’s lives and values. The purpose of the development of biotechnology should benefit human. Destroying biological weapon
Autonomy A normal adult has the right to know his/her medical history and choose the ways of treatment. The patient has the right to decide how his/her body or organs be used in medical field.
Safety No organization or individual should use genetic modification technology to earn money or destroy humankind. The action of harming human’s health and peace should be stopped.
Fairness The development and application of biotechnology should be opened to everyone . The application should not base on their gender, age, skin color, ethnic group, physical and economical condition.
Shall we do product testing on animals?
Classwork 1. What are the benefits to humankind of using the technology in the story? 2. What are the problems to human kind of using the technology in the story? 3. If you were that scientist, how would you modify the experiment so that it fits the ethic principles?
Shall we replicate and modify human? In 2018 December, a Chinese scientist He Jiankui ( 賀建奎 ) announced that he successfully modified the DNA of a pair of twin embryos so that they will have resistance to AIDS virus in a seminar held in Hong Kong. His team put these embryos in a womb of a female and let them to develop as babies. The twin girls were labored. The names of the twins are “Lulu” ( 露露 ) and “ NaNa ” ( 娜娜 ). Most of the scientists critised He’s action is “stupid and dangerous” The Chinese court sentenced He in jail for three years and 3 million RMB as fine, in the charge of making money on human body and violation of ethic rules.
