Blood group determination

Blood bank refers to a division of hospital where blood or its components, are stored and its proper testing is performed. The blood bank selects the donors and recipients to assure proper matching In blood bank blood is stored with an anticoagulant, generally an acid-citrate-dextrose solution (ACD) ACD is composed of trisodium citrate, citric sodium, dextrose and sterile water Temp for storage ; 20 TO 40 c The red blood cells from blood can be stored for 21 days in ACD and in recipient can survive for 100 days . Blood banks consider blood unsuitable if retained for more than 21 days After 21 days stored blood may be reduced to plasma by centrifuging it to eliminate RBC.

Prolonged storage of whole blood can be done at less than -70 degree celsius Freezing and thawing may damage whole blood and red cells Glycerol and dimethyl sulphoxide solution minimizes damage of red blood cells can be maintained in frozen state without any injury Blood derivatives : Plasma and platelets to treat different disorders S ignificanc e : world war 1: 1918 : American physician Oswald H. Robertson 1937 : Large scale blood bank ; Cook country hospital in chicago Blood bank is useful and important because they ensure constant supply of usable , compatible blood for use I transfusions and other medical procedures like trauma, surgery, and therapeutic treatment of disease, like sickle cell anemia
