Bodwell High School 2015-2016 Brochure

Bodwell High School was founded in 1991 in the City of Vancouver and is a non-denominational, co-educational day and boarding school, offering grades 8 to 12 and university preparation. In September, 2003, the school moved into its new facility on Harbourside Drive in North Vancouver, overlooking Burrard Inlet and the Vancouver harbour. Bodwell's purpose is to "provide a culturally diverse environment for students from around the globe, and enable them to become active learners and well-rounded citizens who contribute positively to the world.”[1]

Bodwell’s courses follow the Provincial Curriculum prescribed by the British Columbia Ministry of Education. Students who fulfill the graduation program receive a high school graduation diploma issued by the Ministry of Education. Junior and senior grades are specialized to best fit the needs of Bodwell students.

As of the Fall 2014 Term, Bodwell students represented 36 countries.

At Bodwell, we strongly believe that there are
several powerful aims of education all working
together to guide the development of young
people towards a balanced character. This
concept shapes everything that we do at
Bodwell, represented by “5 L’s.” Each L is an
essential part of the Bodwell experience in both
the academic and boarding programs. We
practice and encourage well-roundedness in our

STUDYING IN ENGLISH
LEARN - Learning a second language is hard work. In learning
academics, the challenge is further magnified. We provide
intensive and ongoing language support throughout a student’s
journey, carefully assessing major milestones in English
development. There are countless opportunities to use English
outside of class to accelerate language learning.
EXPLORING CANADIAN CURRICULUM
LIBERATE - Encountering a new educational system presents
the thrill of expanding one’s academic mind beyond the familiar
by understanding the world in ways never before imagined. We
provide extra support outside of class through academic clubs,
tutoring and specially-designed enrichment opportunities. Our
teachers seamlessly infuse this learning with a global flavour.
STEPPING TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE
LIVE - Living away from family’s direct support is an exciting
chance to practice independence. All students start as
boarding students until they are prepared for more mature living
in a local homestay. Our secure campus provides peace of mind
for students and parents alike. We maintain frequent
communication home while offering week-round guidance.
FORGING A PERSONAL IDENTITY
LEAD - The adolescent years are a pivotal time in a person’s life.
Bodwell students actively seek out roles in the school and
community and come to lead their peers through positive
examples. Each student is motivated to take on leadership and
service positions in order to show how one person can truly

LOOK - Bodwell students discover their passions while aspiring
for the future. A well-structured week-round program provides

We provide guidance in both personal and academic
concerns, supporting each student to LOOK into

university studies. Our counsellors speak many of
the languages of our students, serving as the link
between school and home.
TECHNICAL STAFF
An efficient and dedicated team of specialists
works behind the scenes to provide students with a
safe, healthy, and comfortable living experience at
Bodwell. These vital members include a registered
nurse, a team of chefs, innovative IT experts, bus
drivers, housekeepers, facility managers, and helpful
office administrators.

Academics
With the expert instruction of teachers, students put their full effort to the vigorous work
of learning Canadian curricula. Critical thinking allows students to demonstrate the higher-
order skills needed for success at university. Classes in Arts and Athletics allow students to

Learning extends beyond the classroom through life in the Boarding Program. Students focus on their own development of life skills in such areas as self-care and personal planning. Engagement through in-house activities and supervised outings allows students to deepen friendships and broaden their horizons. Student life is a chance to participate and mature as young adults as well as to recharge for the day ahead.

For young global citizens, being able to communicate fluently in several languages is a necessity. Becoming
multilingual gives young people the power to communicate across cultures. Almost worldwide, post-secondary study
requires a mastering of language skills in English. Strong English abilities are a powerful asset in business and other
industries. Wherever their travels and opportunities take them, students will benefit from English as a
world language.
With 25 years of experience, helping students with a range of English language skills is a specialty in which we excel
through our programming at all grades and skill levels. Students are immersed into English learning not only in the
classroom setting but also in every aspect of student life.

LEARNING ABOUT THE
WORLD THROUGH ENGLISH
At Bodwell our Academic and English Preparation Program (AEP) is a
focused English Language Learning (ELL) curriculum. High school
content is interwoven into AEP programming to ensure a smooth
transition into the regular high school curriculum. Instruction covers
basic interpersonal communication to advanced academic language
proficiency. In addition, students will learn crucial skills for academic
success such as teamwork, research and problem solving.
Assessment and placement
Accurate assessment and placement of students in the appropriate
language levels is most important. All new students are carefully
measured in their comprehension, oral and written English skills to be
placed in the right level as soon as they start school. Student progress
is checked every three weeks with a language rubric. The rubric is what
staff, parents, and students can all refer to in order to understand the
student’s improvement in English grammar, speaking, listening, writing
and reading skills.
AEP proficiency levels
Bodwell offers AEP classes in grades 8 to 11. The grade 8 and 9 classes
are divided into two language levels and the grade 10 and 11 classes
are divided into four language levels. Once a specific level of English
proficiency has been met, a student is promoted to the next level. This
continues until they reach a proficiency that would allow them to
succeed in the academic grade program.
Course offerings
Academic and English Preparation courses are intensive English
courses which focus on literature, social sciences, and academic
writing for all levels. In the highest level of AEP, some courses
blend the sciences with the language content. We plan for
students to spend three quarters of their time during each term in
this intensive English program before moving into the academic
grade program. In the various levels of AEP language learning,
teachers tap into students’ prior knowledge, model best language
practices, apply plenty of verbal cues and body gestures, build key
vocabulary terms, and scaffold learning step by step.
Elective courses are offered to AEP students in each term. AEP
students choose an elective from a wide variety of courses such as
Art, Drama, Concert Band, Physical Education, Food and
Nutrition, Digital Media and Mathematics. A wide range of elective courses serves to match the different levels of
English language skills that the AEP student is at. Students with lower English skills will start with less language
intensive subjects and progress towards subjects requiring more English skills.

At Bodwell we trust that education has the power to push young people past the problematic thinking of yesterday,
to step back to see the big picture of any issue at hand and to open up minds to future possibilities. Critical thinking
is the ability to use reason and reflection in thinking clearly about what to believe or do. It is essential in order to see
how seemingly-disparate ideas or concepts are in fact connected, that content learned in one subject is deeply tied
to that learned in another and all linked to a student’s own personal experience.
We see the importance of practicing critical thinking in order to weigh the worth of previously-held ideas and
understandings of the world. A flexible, independent mind versed in deep contemplation is what universities are
expecting, what global companies are looking for and what the many problems of the modern world now demand.

OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Learning by doing
Bodwell courses are designed with rich academic growth in mind. Courses closely follow the latest BC Provincial
Curriculum. Select Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered too. Literacy and numeracy make up our classroom
building blocks, while students need to demonstrate intellectual development through clearly communicating their
learning to others.
Active learning is a central practice both on and off-campus. Students take responsibility for their own mastery of
ideas by engaging in interactive hands-on activities. Such activities commonly include class debates, learning journals
and peer teaching — to name only a few.
Our teachers regularly give meaningful feedback not only to measure but also to advance student learning. We
encourage students to take part in standardized testing and academic competitions. Prior to graduation, graduates
proudly present their individual learning portfolios to conclude their journey.
Small class size
With smaller classes, students and their teachers form an intimate, multicultural family, allowing for enhanced individual and group opportunities. Bodwell limits each class to a maximum of 24 students, with 17 being the average. In AEP, the class sizes are even smaller.
Use of technology
Students are guided through the curriculum with tools such as SmartBoards, which allow students to model and manipulate complex concepts. All students are issued a laptop to encourage collaboration and learn skills vital to a modern work environment.

These years are essential for directing young people along a sound academic path, to impart with curiosity and help form key study skills as a learning tool for years to come. health. The first step is to motivate students to join with peers and get moving – whether it is on the basketball court
or a mountain trail, in a debate with peers or while creating an artistic mural. Week round there are simply no limits in
opportunities to get involved.
Together with participation, a healthy lifestyle is the foundation from which all things flourish. With a foundation of
good health, each student is ready for pushing their personal limits in all areas of learning. A regular daily structure
allows boarders to maintain a healthy lifestyle as our programs and staff offer numerous ways to stay healthy.

Through engagement
Strong life skills are indispensable for students to be able to take care of themselves, maintain healthy relationships
with others and make positive contributions to their community and the world. Four areas of development have been
chosen for students to practice and pursue, ranging from basic to most advanced:

Bodwell’s dedicated coaches train students to achieve their full potential in mind, body, and spirit as well as value the teamwork and friendships that develop during athletic competition. Bodwell is a member of several local leagues and our teams have won numerous championships.
Clubs
A rich diversity of clubs provide students with the opportunity to learn new skills and develop new interests, or to take existing pursuits to the next step. Staff and students spend meaningful time together engaged in athletics, arts, academics and citizenship.
Festivities
Major school festivities are times to bring all students together for celebration and community building. Festivities may promote specific cultural occasions, traditional Canadian customs, or broader large social activities.
Events
Several times a week there are events arranged for students to gradually push their boundaries and expose themselves to unfamiliar places and interests. These include such popular drop-in events as cooking lessons, sporting intramurals and musical performances.
Outings
Our supervised outings bring groups all over the local region to join cultural celebrations and sporting events, and to make good use of the pristine natural settings of the West Coast. More adventurous students may even take advantage of carefully-planned wilderness trips offered several times each term.
Life Skill Workshops
In order to support students’ development of life skills, we offer a number of ongoing opportunities for focused learning. These include workshops on relevant topics from visiting experts, individual guidance from our specialized staff and access to information and resources on a broad spectrum of issues.

At Bodwell, we believe each student can and should have a chance to lead. Leadership is about much more than an
important title. Instead, we teach students to lead their lives in service to others. Balancing this with self-care is key.
Whether through direct acts or by finding a solution to a compelling problem or need, one person can make all the
difference in their community and perhaps even the world.
Concrete skills to be covered are: taking initiative, communicating ideas, problem solving and much more. Foremost,
effort in leadership teaches students the importance of integrity — of having sound convictions and demonstrating
these through one’s actions. Convictions rooted in love for one’s neighbour, community and planet are needed to
make positive changes.

Volunteering and service learning are elements running throughout Bodwell’s programs. Students must complete 30 hours of work/volunteer experience in community organizations before graduation. Students have been active both in the local community and in the international realm. Notably, for many years a group of students has traveled to another country to provide aid and goodwill to a partner community.

faced with more immediate choices about which courses to take, which university to apply to, or even which career to
move towards. It is not unusual for students to struggle with these choices, responding with “How should I know?”
Bodwell guides students in answering these questions on their own. Planning for the future is akin to making a “map”
of oneself that highlights individual strengths, interests, challenge, and ambitions. Students are encouraged to survey
their own futures so that possible paths are visible, open and abundant. Through the steps of “mapping”, students
can choose their study and career goals with confidence.

Making dreams reality by preparing today
Our graduates not only achieve fluency in English but also learn to set their goals high and sustain a deep desire for
life-long learning that will serve them well in post-secondary life and beyond. The University and Career Guidance
Team helps students to use their skills and ambitions towards the best opportunities for happiness and success.
Through workshops, presentations, university campus visits, and relationships with many university admissions staff,
the team navigates students through the university application process.
University fairs
Bodwell hosts a university fair every year that showcases the numerous university opportunities that exist in Canada.
The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, and others send their
representatives to this fair to share with students all their program opportunities.
Presentations & workshops
We also hold many university presentations and workshops throughout the year aimed at not only exposing students
to various universities at a more intimate level, but also providing in-depth information on how to combine career and
academic choices, how to network and strategies for making vital business connections.
Graduation Transitions Program
Students face a daunting challenge when trying to make sense of all the choices available and where they fit in. The Graduation Transition Program helps students explore their strengths and investigate post-secondary institutions that are looking for those strengths. Discovery of new interests through initiatives organized by the program (e.g. career- focused volunteering) helps brainstorming aimed at uncovering career and study paths.
Studying and connecting around the world
Graduates continue on to many prominent universities around the world, with a wide range of study disciplines among them. We aim for students to succeed in post-secondary life and bring the many skills learned at Bodwell to positively contribute to their new educational institutions.

n our 25th anniversary, we’ve undertaken our second expansion
project, the most ambitious to date. With this expansion, we will be able to host over 500 boarders in an enhanced facility that includes an additional gymnasium, a new library, classrooms and green spaces.
