Objectives At the end of the report, the learners would be able to: 1. identify the 2 (Metaphysics and Epistemology) branches of philosophy. 2. differentiate metaphysics from epistemology 3. justify the relevance of metaphysics and epistemology in education
BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY METAPHYSICS EPISTEMOLOGY
I.METAPHYSICS The study of Being.
2 AREAS OF METAPHYSICS 1. ONTOLOGY- investigates various types of things that exist and their relationship with each other. “Does God exist?” 2. COSMOLOGY-focused on understanding the origin, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe, which includes laws that keep it in perfect order.
What is existence and reality?
Materialism sees Being as made out of material components. For example, THALES thought that Being is water HERACLITUS thought that Being is fire
IDEALISM sees Being and the world as made out of something idealistic or spiritual. PLATO thought that ideas were the first Being because they are eternal.
II. EPISTEMOLOGY/ “GNOSEOLOGY” Greek words “gnosis” - knowledge “logos”- study
HOW IS KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED?
2 APPROACHES TO WHAT KNOWLEDGE AND HOW IT ACQUIRED
1. RATIONALISM - is a branch of epistemology that sees human reason, the “ ratio,” as the source of all knowledge and as the ultimate instrument we use when acquiring knowledge. “WE GAIN KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT EXPERIENCE THROUGHT THE USE OF REASON”
ARISTOTLE & PLATO are rationalists, seeing the human mind as able to understand everything in the universe.
2. EMPIRICISM “ALL KNOWLEDGE ARE ACQUIRED THROUGH EXPERIENCE, AND SEES EXPERIENCE AS SOURCE OF ALL OUR KNOWLEDGE.” JOHN LOCKE & DAVID HUME - people are born as a “ Tabula rasa ”
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF METAPHYSICS AND EPISTEMOLOGY IN EDUCATION?
“ In education, epistemology is crucial in understanding the processes of learning and teaching. It helps educators to think critically about how students acquire knowledge and how they can facilitate this process effectively. “
“ Metaphysics also has an important role in education, as it raises questions about the nature of reality and existence. This can have significant implications for the curriculum and the way that subjects are taught. ”
