Heat waves feel hotter on our skin. Storms and floods get worse each
year. The Arctic ice is breaking into pieces. Why is all this happening?
One reason is global warming. When people hear about global warming,
they worry about polar bears and penguins. But an unexpected is
the bumblebee. Some bumblebees now have shorter tongues than before.
How does global warming cause this?
Passage Reading

UNIT 2
What is happening
around us because of
global warming?
Question
What do you think this
passage will tell us?
Question
victim
Passage Reading
To answer this question, let’s look at the Central Rockies. Some of the
bumblebees there used to have long tongues. Their long tongues were
to out from deep-tubed flowers, such as the bluebell
and the foxglove. Summers became
hotter and drier, so there was not
enough water. As a result, the number
of flowers in the mountains.
Deep-tubed flowers became fewer as
well.

Passage Reading
The hungry bumblebees had to visit other flowers to get food. But
because most flowers have short tubes, the bumblebees’ tongues were

How did bumblebees
change to adapt to
short-tube flowers?
Question
It’s great for the bumblebees, but bad news for the deep-tubed flowers.
If there are no long-tongued bees, then who will spread the of
these flowers? They could forever! Global warming is affecting
all parts of the environment. But we don’t know exactly what’s going to
happen moving forward. Bumblebees could be the to understanding
the changes around us!
