Metal housework helpers
Robots are often popular characters in cartoons and science fiction, but not usually a part of real life.
However, robots that do household jobs are becoming more common every day. Maybe you know
somebody that has a robot vacuum cleaner. This robot moves around the living room by itself, and it
cleans dust and dirt from the floor. A similar robot mops the floor and sends you a text message when
it finishes. Robots that can clean windows are quite new. They climb up and down your windows and
clean them from top to bottom.
However, nobody wants to spend money on a different robot for every job. This is why Japanese
engineers are building a robot cleaner: a single robot that does all your household chores. This
intelligent robot has a human face and can tidy rooms, mop the floors, or vacuum the living room rug.
It is so helpful that it can even bring you a drink or snack from the refrigerator while you sit down and
watch it do all the work. What makes this robot different is that it is always learning. It can study your
routine and then clean when you are out of the house. The robot also understands lots of languages
so everyone can give it instructions.
There are not many people that can buy a robot cleaner now. They cost over £20,000 and aren’t in
shops yet. However, in the future, maybe all of us can have our very own robot cleaner.
