EDUCATION SYSTEM BEFORE THE BRITISH RULE IN INDIA Before the British Rule, Education was imparted through a chain of elementary schools – Pathshala , Maktabs and Madrasas for higher education. The education provided in such institutions were based on old texts like Vedas and their commentaries . But when British put steps in India the education system suffered a lot and east India company loses interest in education .

Introduction of western education Western education was led by following causes. East India company Christian missionaries

Introduction of Western Education – East India Company English East India Company showed a very little interest in promotion of education in India The purpose of these institutes is to supply the steady education about the law and establish classical language knowledge.

First educational institutes East India company The Calcutta Madrasa Sanskrit College Fort William College

The Calcutta Madrasa Set up in/at : 1781 / Calcutta Set up by : Warren Hastings Purpose : For the study of Muslim law and related subjects

Sanskrit College Set up in/at : 1791 / Banaras Set up by : Jonathan Duncan Purpose : For the study of Hindu Law and philosophy

Fort William College Set up in/at : 1800 / Calcutta Set up by : Lord Wellesley Purpose : For the training of the civil servants of the company in languages and customs of Indians.

Christian missionaries Activities of Christian Missionaries compelled British to promote Western Education in India . Main English Missionaries : Charles Grant William Wilberforce

Charles Grant Known as the father of modern education The character act of 1831 is established due to his struggle According to this act 1 lakh rupees was denoted to improve the education system. He put more stress in western education and open number of schools and colleges for high class families. The character act fails afterwards .

Orientalists and Anglicists debate and Macaulay system of education Orientalist were concern about regional studies . Anglicist were concern about western studies. Raja Ram Mohan Roy was an Indian who forced the British to promote Indian education for the welfare of the country. Macaulay was a British man who had imparted English language in all the institutions . Under Macaulay’s system of education ,he stated that every zone was to have an government school which was under British. For example- 42 schools were set up by 1842 and Bengal was divided into nine educational zones Persian was abolished and English was made the court language Published English books and sell them at low price.

Wood Despatch 1854 He proposed the first comprehensive plan for the promotion of western education. He also give importance to primary schools and presented all institutes in hierarchy such as primary , middle, high , college and university. He made English compulsory in higher education and local languages at school level. He give training to teachers and promote women education too. Open universities in C alcutta , Madras and B ombay . He made it compulsory that education institutes was run by European headmasters and principles.

Growth of national education 1906 In 1906 Indian nationalist leaders formed a National Council Of Education . Central Hindu School in Benaras established by Annie Besant in July 1898 . Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College(MAO) in Aligarh was established by Sayed Ahmad Khan in1875 and later on universty. National Muslim School by S ayyid A hmed Baraveli . New English School(1880s) in Bombay was founded by Bal Gangadhar Tilak . The first women’s university was established by Dhonde Keshav Karve in Poona in 1916 it is the first women’s university that set up. Borda universty also come to existance in 1949 after long struggle.
