approach to planning. instructional planning.
Objectives
Introduction
Teaching English in the elementary levels could prove
to be difficult especially if it is taught out of context.
Language always exists in a communicative context.
As such, teaching language should also reflect this
very nature. In this lesson, we are going to look into
the thematic approach to instructional planning, and
how you could use it to deliver instruction to your
learners.
THINK: Thematic Teaching
Thematic approach to instruction highlights a theme
through interdisciplinary planning, utilizing
knowledge relationships across academic disciplines
and everyday life situations. It is closely related to
interdisciplinary instruction, project-based, and
phenomenon-based learning, enabling natural
learning and an alternative to fragmented classroom
activities.
Choosing a theme.
The teacher or learner selects the focus
theme for a unit or lesson, ranging from
small concepts like family to larger
ones like community, sourced from
national curriculum, local events, or
children's interests.
Integrating the theme with the existing curriculum
The teacher must organize curriculum
objectives around the chosen theme,
identifying concepts from various
learning areas to supplement it,
such as Social Studies, Values Education,
and Mathematics.
Designing instructional plan
Instructional planning involves
various elements, including
thematic planning, which
involves adjustments in
learning strategies, activities,
experiences, and materials
related to the theme.
Encouraging presentation
The thematic approach encourages
learners to present their work in various
settings, including the classroom,
community, or the internet, making it more
meaningful and engaging for them,
enhancing their understanding and
engagement.
