SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT Solid waste management is a term that is used to refer to the process from collecting to treating solid wastes . It also offers solutions for recycling items that do not belong to garbage or trash.
WHY IS WASTE MANAGEMENT NECESSARY? SW in water bodies Ghats of Varanasi SW dumped in open Irregular SW collection Burning of SW in open Threat to Sea life
1 2 4 3 WASTE DISPOSAL WASTE GENERATION WASTE COLLECTION WASTE SEGREGATION WASTE ROUTE How does it travel after you dispose in your bin? SW Generation: Major / Bulk waste generators must be targeted & highlighted for ease in collection of Solid waste. SW Segregation: Segregation of waste must be done at source. At least Wet and dry waste must be kept separate. SW Collection: Only Segregated waste must be collected and incase of mixed waste fine must be charged. Collection routes must cover the entire city. SW Disposal: SW must be disposed off using proper disposal techniques and dumping of solid waste in open grounds is highly dangerous.
COMPOSTING Composting: It is a natural process completely free of hazardous by-products. This process involves breaking down the material into organic compounds that can be used as manure Landfills: It involves use of large area that is dug up, then filled with waste and covered with soil. This process gives out hazardous liquid waste ( leachate ) as well as poisonous gases Recycling: It is one of the most well- known methods of waste management. It can be easily done if waste is segregated at source. Incineration: This waste disposal technique requires high temperature set up in a controlled environment. This process is opted for medical waste which can be hazardous if disposed off WASTE DISPOSAL TECHNIQUES RECYCLING 1 2 INCINERATION 4 LANDFILLS 3

PLASTIC BAN HANDBOOK
The term “single-use plastic” literally means any plastic item that you only use a single time and then throw away. Some examples are disposable plates or bowls, disposable utensils, straws, grocery bags, water bottles, cups, plastic wrap, and zip-top bags. It can also pollute our waterways and sit in a huge pile leaching toxic chemicals into our soil and, eventually, into the water supply. Plastic is not necessarily THE problem, but our overuse of it is. SINGLE USE PLASTIC
