This workbook is a companion to the
book: ’Building the Internet of Things’
Who is the workbook for?
Anyone within an organization that is eager to take advantage of the
Internet of Things (IoT). While the process of implementing a first IoT
project involves a number of people, the initial impetus is not confined
solely to business leaders, but also operational, technical and line of
business influencers and decision makers at all levels.
What is the purpose of the workbook?
To help the reader identify, plan, implement and assess the outcome
of a first IoT project. The project can serve as a model for further IoT
adoption across the organization.
How does it work?
It provides a combination of checklists, questions, guidance and
notes to help take your IoT project from concept to reality. By
working through each section, you will be able to articulate your IoT
opportunity; assess your readiness; create a plan for implementation
and direct the outcome.

The dynamics of IoT, however, vary by industry and
use case. As a result, IoT is neither one market nor
one opportunity; rather, it’s a series of opportunities
across different vertical markets, each with myriad
business cases, time frames and payoffs. Thousands
of organizations have already started on their
IoT journeys, using IoT solutions to improve their
operations and transform their businesses.

The result is this IoT Workbook—another first of
its kind. Consider it an instructional companion
to ‘Building the Internet of Things.’ Like drawing
by numbers, it helps connect all the right dots
while you embark or expand on your IoT journey.
This workbook includes interactive activities that
will help you assess your IoT idea, evaluate the
readiness of your technology and team, create a
project plan, pull the various pieces and people
together, and keep them going forward.
This exercise should be fun, fairly quick and
useful for anyone passionate about capturing
the potential value of IoT. You don’t have to be
an engineer to complete it. This can be a stand-
alone workbook, but more context, insight and
results can be gained by first reading, ‘Building
the Internet of Things.’ After all, isn’t that what
IoT is all about—collecting data, analyzing and
creating value from it? So, just flip the page and
you can begin. True to IoT, let’s start by collecting

Identify the things, the devices, you want
to connect and then connect them to an IP
network. Any organization that uses the Internet
almost certainly has an IP network someplace.
You just need to find it and connect to it. Most
likely it’s in the wall right behind your desk.
You’ll need to consider existing heterogeneous
environments too - such as SIP, Modbus and
COA. It’s highly likely that your organization
has a mix of these around branch, field or
operations sites.
Integrating assets across these environments is
feasible with many proven models and successful
blueprints to feed the data into existing ERP
systems and other enterprise applications.
This gets a little trickier if the organization
doesn’t yet have the devices or systems
you need to connect. Then you will have to
requisition them and get them configured for
an IP network.
Identify and connect devices,
technologies and systems
This should be straightforward since your
organization probably already has most of what
you will need to carry out your first IoT project.
Essentials to identify
and connect devices
Use what you already have by way of devices, unless they are not reliable or lack the capabilities to support the level of performance you are expecting.
If you don’t have appropriate devices or systems, start the process of acquiring them while trying to avoid a drawn out requisitioning process.
Make sure everything you acquire supports IP, preferably IPv6, and is compatible with your organization’s existing network infrastructure, routers, switches, bridges and servers.
You have the results, now take the steps.
Prepare & blueprint | Step 10

The first thing you should think about, even
before data or business logic, is security. Think
about security by pondering risks and threats.
Identify the likely threats your IoT project may
encounter and then evaluate each threat in terms
of its likelihood and the damage it could cause.
Once you know these three things—the threat,
its likelihood and damage it can cause—you can
determine the best way to reduce the risk and
mitigate the potential damage. With luck, your
organization has already considered much of
this and has capabilities in place to help you.
You also need to consider data integrity. It
is crucial to the success of any IoT project,
requiring processes and checks to ensure its
accuracy and validity. Remember that often the
captured data has many beneficiaries and users,
beyond those originally intended.
Now that you have addressed security, the rest
is simple. Identify the data you will need for
your IoT project. This is the data you will need
to do the work and generate the kind of results
you expect, and the business rules or logic you
want to process the data to generate meaningful
results. Remember GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage
Out): put in clean, accurate data and you should
get meaningful results out.
Be sure to watch out for exciting developments
in security, including blockchain, as it represents
a route to emerging models and opportunities in
data and record distribution.

Make sure the security framework you
started to put in place will continue to
meet your security objectives.
Now turn your attention to the data you expect to capture and determine how you want it processed to produce the kind of results you are anticipating.
In most cases, this will entail simple ordering and ranking of results, tabulating
results, calculating averages, identifying trends and noting data outliers.
Prepare your system and datasets for use with Machine Learning engines
down the road.
Address data business
logic and security needs
Which data or combination of data will give you the answers you want? Of course,
remember to take your organization’s recommended steps to secure the data.

You need to cultivate, motivate and manage
as you would any other entity that contributes
to your success. And while you are doing that,
don’t ignore your own staff.
As they become more experienced in IoT,
they become more valuable to you and your
organization. So, pay attention to and manage
your external and internal ecosystem.
Build your “coalition
of the willing”
Your coalition of the willing is simply your ecosystem of
partners, suppliers and contractors who you can rely on.

Not every project will be a game-changer, at least not initially. Use the metrics
to assess the payback, identify what worked and pinpoint any problems.

Hernström tuli vähän jälkeen sivuhuoneesta, astui kaapin luo,
jonka oven rouva oli avannut.

Molemmat nousivat epäröiden ja silmäilivät tuonne loukkoon,
missä rouva yhä seisoi ja lapsi hänen sylissään yksinään jokelteli.
Luetteloa alettiin tarkastaa. Mutta se rupesi kohta käymään kovin
vaikeaksi ilman rouvan apua.
"Kuuleppas Elli!" virkkoi Hernström.
Rouva ei päätään käännä. Mies menee luokse, laskee kätensä
vaimon olkapäälle.
"Elli, autappas meitä hiukan", kuiskaa ja naurahtaa. Hyvä ystävä,
tämähän on ohi menevää laatua, pitäisi naurun sanoa. Mutta isä saa

pienen jokeltelevan tyttösen ja äiti kiirehtii toiseen huoneeseen.
Hernström luo kysyvän katseen hänen peräänsä ja alkaa kauniin
lapsen kanssa leikkiä.
"Katsokaas tätä tytärtä, se tukistaa niin hirveästi", hän sanoo ja
menee vieraiden luo, jotka tupakoiden, kiirehtimättä odottavat.
"Kas"…
Tulevat molemmat lähelle. Tahtovat kättä lapselta. Se nauraa,
yrittää partaan. Yks, kaks: se on vanhemman "sedän" sylissä ja
nuorempi "setä" melkein kadehtii… Hernström menee
sivuhuoneeseen…
Sedät huvitteleivat tytön kanssa, mutta ajattelevat sen ohessa
yhteen jaksoon: miksikähän ei se rouva tervehtinyt?… Nyt se
varmaan jo hymyilee, kun tulee ja näkee, että me otamme asian
näin perheelliseltä kannalta…
Miksi hymyilee? Mitä he rouvan hymyilystä? Ovathan he "pesän
hoitajia"!…
Ne tulevat taas peräkkäin, rouva edellä, mies perässä.
Nyt … nyt se… Molempain vierasten katse, samalla kun lapsen
kanssa vehkeilevät, seuraa rouvaa.
Ei silmäystäkään!
Nuoren, kauniin rouvan tukka on hajalla, kasvot pesemättä,
vaatteet epäjärjestyksessä, — tämän kaiken huomaavat vieraat
tarkoin. Rouva ei siis välitä heistä, ei rahtuakaan!

Yht'äkkiä nuorempi, joka on lapsen saanut, toivoo, että rouva tahi
itse Hernström tulisivat ja ottaisivat lapsen, kun häntä pitävät lapsen
piikana. Onko tämä loukkausta vai huomaamattomuuttako?…
Hernström on mennyt rouvan luokse kaapin tykö, ja kuiskuttelee
jotain sen korvaan…
Pesänhoitajista alkaa tuntua, että olisi varsin erinomaista, kun
keksisi syyn, jonka perusteella voisi tämän lykätä toiseen päivään.
"Antakaa anteeksi", tulee Hernström nöyrän näköisenä pyytäen,
"vaimoni on hiukan pahalla tuulella… Kultuseni", alkaa hän lapselle,
joka on nuoremmalla sedällä, "oletko jo tukistanut setää?
Tukistappas, kas tällä tavoin … noin?… Ha haa! … se osaa jos
jotain"…
"Onko se vanha?" kyselee vanhempi hymyillen.
"Kuuden kuukauden. Kas noin se tekee… Se on hyvin hauska
veitikka".
Nyt nosti rouva esiin piirongin laatikosta vaatteita.
"Tehkää niin hyvin. Kas tässä on"…
Rouva läheni kuin tuulessa nuorempaa, otti lapsen, mutta ei
puhunut mitään … aivan kun se olisi vaan jokapäiväinen tapaus, että
lasta näin pidellään! — —
Siinä oli lakanoita, hienoja, isoja, sirosti ommellut nimet nurkissa.
Molemmat pesänhoitajat joutuivat ajattelemaan, että nämät ovat
hyvin uusia ja tehtyjä morsius-aikana…

Senhän nyt siitäkin arvaa, kun niissä on muutamissa molempain

Vanhempi on onnellisessa avioliitossa, nuorempi kihloissa. — —
"Kultakello", ääntää Hernström. Ääni oudosti vavahtaa. Vanhempi
katsoo kädessään olevaa luetteloa, mutta silmät varastauvat väkisten
rouvaan, joka irroittaa sitä rinnoiltaan.
— Jos olisin rikas, en seisoisi tässä! Hyvä Jumala, siihen jättäisin,
se on katkeraa, hirveätä, ajattelee vanhempi.
"Rouva on hyvä ja antaa olla vaan päällä", sanoo nuorempi.
Mutta rouva laskee sen pöydälle sanaakaan sanomatta…
"Hopeakello … neljä … kultasormusta".
Pariskunta riisuu niitä päältään.
"Antakaa, antakaa olla", pyytää vanhempi. Nuoremmalla on kova
kiire ulos.
Rouva laskee kultasormukset pöydälle, miehensä sormuksen
rinnalle…
Mutta, mitä? Yskähtikö hän?… Hän rientää toiseen huoneeseen.
Sieltä alkaa kuulua vaitonainen, äänekäs itku…
"Oh, hoh, pappa tanssittaa Lilliä!" Ja totta puhuen, hän pyörähtää
lapsen kanssa polkantahdissa, mutta — kyyneleethän hänen
silmistään juoksevat!…

Vanhempi pesänhoitaja sytyttää paperossiaan kakluunin luona ja
pyyhkii nenäliinallaan hikeä otsaltaan, vaikka huoneessa on lämmintä
vaan 11 astetta.

Naapurukset.
Sitä ei kukaan tahtonut kieltää, ettei Tuomilahden Esko olisi
yleensä ollut hyvin kelpomies, vieläpä varsin oivallinenkin. Sen
muuten oli seurakunnan enemmistö jo tunnustanutkin asettamalla
hänet lautamies-ehdokkaaksi, kunnallislautakunnan jäseneksi, y.m.
Kyläläiset häntä pitivät varsinaisena syöttö- ja ojansyynimiehenä
j.n.e. Esko oli siis "ylösotettu mies". Ja tottapuhuen: huonompiakin
sitä ylösotetaan!
Esko ei olekaan joka tuulen ajeltavana, ei omista kohta kaikellaisia
uusia aatteita, joita nuorten hulivilien toitottamana joskus hänenkin
korvaansa saapuu. Hän sanoo itse olevansa miehuullinen mies ja
myöskin vanhoillinen mies.
Siis — kerrassaan oiva mies!
Niinpä, kun raittius-asiasta ruvettiin Eskon kotipitäjässä
puhumaan, arveli Esko, että se on kyllä hyvä niille, jotka ovat
juoppoja. Mutta kun sanottiin, että Eskonkin pitäisi esimerkin vuoksi
ruveta raittiuden harrastajaksi, rupesi Esko nauramaan:
"Vai hänenkin!" Onko hän mikään juoppo? Ja jos joskus
maistaakin niin siihen ei tule kenenkään mitään. Omaansa hän

ryyppää, sanoi Esko.
Niin perin viisaasti ja järkevästi hän haasteli. Eskolla oli naapuri,
Mikko, se Tuomilahden Mikko. He olivat aina eläneet hyvässä
sovussa, saaneet riitelemättä toisensa raja-ojille, eivät
kumpanenkaan koskaan kadottaneet metsänrajoja, eikä toinen
rikastunut juuri paremmin kuin toinenkaan. He istuskelivat iltasin
toistensa tuvissa, jaarittelivat kaiken maailman asioista ja tilasivat
yhteiset sanomalehdet. Eskon ja Mikon nimipäivinä he yhdessä
ryypiskelivät toistensa kunniaksi ja terveydeksi, tulivat iloiselle
tuulelle, rallattivat poikana-olon aikuisia laulunpätkiä, naureskelivat
ja iloitsivat elämästä ja hyvästä naapuruudesta.
Se oli hauskaa, oikein hauskaa naapuruselämää. Niin Esko kuin
Mikkokin pitivät siitä. Mitä kumpasenkin emännät siitä sanoivat
silloin, kun miehet nimipäiviä ja kaupunkituliaisia pitivät, se ei
oikeastaan miesten mielestä saa muuttaa asiaa, sillä se on vaan
akkain puhetta. Mikko ja Esko sanoivat sen monta kertaa, että akat
nostavat melua turhasta. Ja kun se on miesten puhetta, niin sitä kai
meidän uskoa täytyy.
Mutta sitten… Mikä lie Mikon päähän pistänyt, kun hän erään
kerran, Eskon kanssa siitä neuvottelematta kirjoitti nimensä
raittiusseuran kirjoihin. Siitä päivin oli naapurusten välillä jotain
niinkuin sumuista ja sakeaa. Kun ensi kerran sen jälkeen tapasivat
toisensa, sanoi Esko suoraan että: "Jopa naapuri nyt rupesi
lapsittelemaan".
Mikko oli hiukan hämillään. Tunsi, että Esko asettui hänen
suhteensa isälliselle kannalle. Muistui ehdottomasti mieleen, miten
silloin kun hän oli ollut ensikertaa yökulussa, isävainaja oli aamulla
sanonut:

"Jassoo, Mikki se meinaa ruveta akantouhuihin".
"Akantouhuihin", oli Mikko silloin matkinut, oli hiukan suuttunut,
kun isän huomautus oli niin pureva. Mutta ei sentään suuttunutkaan
kovin pahoin, vaan meni pihalle, päästäkseen pois isän käsistä sillä
kun oli niin ivallinen hymy suupielessä.
Nyt, kun Esko sanoi hänelle, että "jopa naapuri nyt rupesi
lapsittelemaan" teki hänen mielensä jättää naapuri siihen, kun ei
oikein löytänyt mitään puollustuskeinoa teolleen ja Esko näytti niin
rehevältä ja miehuulliselta.
Esko tarjosi sitte ryyppyä ja sanoi ilkeästi kikattaen:
"Ota ryyppy naapuri, äläkä turhaile".
"En otakaan", sanoi Mikko, "kyllä minä nyt ainakin puolen vuotta
olen ottamatta. En minä sentään niin lapsi ole, että heti rikon".
Ja niin he erosivat. Siitä lähtein rupesi Esko jokaisessa sopivassa
tilaisuudessa tekemään ilvettä Mikon raittiudesta. Mutta siitä Mikko
ehti jo suuttumaan siksi, että toisinaan janttina muodostui
pisteliääksi väittelyksi.
Toistensa luona käynnit harvenivat. Esko otti silloin tällöin Mikon
uhallakin pitempiä ryyppyjä kuin ennen. Vaan Mikollepa tuon
johdosta selvisikin vähitellen kantansa. Eskon esimerkki sai hänet
ajattelemaan: se oli totta tosiaan viisas teko, että hän aikanansa
luopui alituisesta Eskon seurasta.
Eräänä päivänä sitten levisi huhu, että Mikko oli ottanut ryypyn,
yhden ryypyn jossain, se nyt on sama missä. Esko sai sen kuulla.

Niinkuin hän olisi saanut suuren lahjan, otti hän heti puolen päivää
haltuunsa ja lähti naapureihin kiertämään ja kertomaan:
"Jopa se on mennyt naapurin Mikonkin raittius, mennyt on. Luuli
olevansa sellainen siveyden apostoli ja niin se nyt on mennyt. Ei sitä
pitäisi ryhtyäkään sellaisiin, kun ei kerran ole miestä pitämään."
Tuota Esko kulki kuuluttaen. Mikkokin sai sen kuulla. Lähti Eskon
luoksi.
"Mitä sinä sellaisia juoruat", sanoi Mikko nyreissään, "lakaise
ensinnä oman ovesi edusta ja tule sitte vasta meille. Sinä olet
levittänyt hävytöntä valhetta. Minä en ole ottanut ryyppyä, enkä
ota."
Esko häpesi ja rupesi leikiksi lyömään. Mutta Mikko ei tyytynyt
siihen. Jatkoi vaan, että ei se ole mitään miehuullista levittää toista
alentavia juoruja.
Mikko laittoi muuten todistetuksi, että tuo juttu hänen
raittiuslupauksensa rikkomisesta oli väärä. Mutta Esko se nauroi
asialle vielä jälkeenpäinkin ja koko Mikko pilasi arvonsa hänen
silmissään yhä enemmän, mitä useamman kerran hänen täytyi jäädä
pois Mikon kaupunkituliaisilta.
Vaan erään kerran teki Esko itse kaupunkireisulla pieniä
hullutuksia, pudotti laukkunsa ja matkavakkansa y.m.
Kun asia piikain kautta aamulla naapureihin ehti, tulivat isännät
pienessä kiusanhengessä itse Eskolta asiaa kyselemään. Esko
häpeissään ja kohmelossa vielä sängystä kurkisteli.

"Olitko juovuksissa?" kyselivät toiset. Esko koetti kiertäin kaartain
selittää:
"No ei, en minä juovuksissa ollut, mutta saatoin nyt vähä
liikutettuna olla, kun siinä lähteissä join pullon olutta ihan
syömättömään ruumiiseen. Mutta kun olin koko vuorokauden
valvonut, niin olin niin väsyksissä ja rupesi nukuttamaan…"
Toiset kun tulivat pois, naureskelivat:
"Ei vaan sekään tunnustaisi juopottelemistaan, silloin kun
vahinkoja tulee. Mielellänsä nyt olisi kävellyt Mikon housuissa, kun se
olisi vaan laatuun käynyt, väittänyt ettei hän ollut ottanut
olutlasiakaan."
Niin ne naapurit arvelivat. Mutta Esko hautoi kotona kohmeloista
päätänsä, muisteli menetettyä laukkua ja matka-arkkua ja kuunteli
emännän pistopuheita.
"Naapurin Mikko", sanoi emäntä muun muassa, — "se se kulkee
reimasti kaupungissa, eipähän pudottele laukkujaan, eikä
eväsvakkojaan."
"Tuki sinä!" — huusi Esko, "en suinkaan minä nyt ainakaan
ryyppäämisen tähden niitä ole pudottanut, en jo."
"Hoo", sanoi emäntä, "no selvällä päälläkö sinä tavaroitasi
vierittelet reestä maantien ojaan, rakas Esko?"
Eskolta tahtoi jo oikein kärsivällisyys loppua. Ja totta puhuen ei se
mikään kumma ollutkaan. Vähemmästäkin pistelemisestä ja
kiusanteosta on jo monta kertaa tukkanuottasilla oltu. Eihän se nyt
mikään Egyptin kumma ole, jos riski ja reima mies joskus niin paljon

ryyppää, että laukkunsa ja arkkunsa pienessä ilonpuuskassa heittää
maantielle muiden ihmisten korjattavaksi! Ja varsinkin kun on
sellainen mies kun Esko, joka on maailmassa ollut jo monessa
paikassa, on saanut kätellä kuvernööriä ja mitä kaikkea onkaan
saanut tehdä…
Eskon täytyi kuunnella akkansa pistoksia koko pitkän päivän, kun
ei ilennyt kyläänkään mennä. Iltapäivällä seisoskeli pihalla, katseli
kaupungista tulevia ja toivoi sydämmensä salaisuudessa, että joku
nyt tulisi sieltä oikein rääsyllänsä, aika sikana. Hän aavisti, että
sellainen tapaus tuottaisi hänelle jotain omantunnon rauhaa ja iloa:
kun muutkin juopottelevat. Eipä aikaakaan, hän näkee vähän
etäämmällä tulevan naapurin Mikon. Aikoi ensin piiloon pistäytyä,
vaan äkkäsi sitten paremmin ja puheli itsekseen: "Katsonpahan, eikö
ole ryyppyä ottanut. Kummapa on, jos ei ole!"
Vaan kun Mikko tuli portin kohdalle, kampasi alas reeltään ja nosti
kuormaltaan Eskon arkun ja laukun, niin Esko meni punaiseksi ja
valkoiseksi.
"Mitäs saamaria", murisi hän, "mun jälkiänikö se nyt korjaamaan
rupeaa?" Sitte lähti Mikon luoksi saapastamaan.
"Jassoo", sanoi Mikko, kun Eskon näki, "katsos täällä on sun
arkkusi ja laukkusi."
Esko tutkii ja tuijottelee eikö tuo vietävä ole vähääkään
juovuksissa.
Mutta ei se ollut.
"Onko nämät sinun?" kysyy Mikko ja hymyilee.

"Ky-ky-kyllähän ne vis-vissiinkin."
Mikko ei tahdo saattaa nauruansa pidättää, kun toinen niin
äkältelee ja hämillänsä on.
"Mihinkä sinä ne jätit?" kysyy tuo kurillinen Mikko.
"Häh?" tuumii Esko…
"Mihinkä sinä ne jätit?"
"Häh? tuota noin, noo … mistä sä oot ne saanut?"
"No tottahan sinä tiedät, mihinkä sinä kapineitas heittelet?"
"Tuota, tuota", panee Esko, "se nyt oli sellaista, tuota…"
Mikko rupeaa nauramaan ja selittää, mistä hän on ne saanut.
Jopa tulee siihen Eskon emäntäkin.
"Siinä se oli!" huutaa jo matkan päästä, kun isäntänsä kapineet
näkee kotiin tulleiksi. "Mutta meidän isäntä olis nyt mielellään
naapurin isännän housuissa, olis jo!" jatkoi vielä.
Eskon pistää oikein hartaasti vihaksi, kun akka ja naapurin Mikko
molemmat hänelle nauravat, eikä hänen auta muuta kuin kuunnella
ja päätä kynsiä. Eikä se olekaan, suomeksi sanoen, miehelle mitään
leikkiä, kun kaksi raavasta ihmistä vastasilmiä nauraa. Mutta pään
kynsimisestäkään ei lähde apua. Hämillään Esko tuijottelee pitkin
nenänsä vartta, kun Mikko nousee rekeensä koirankurisesti kehuen
ja lohdutellen että:
"Noo, miehelle sitä vahinko tulee ei vasikalle".

Mutta tämän erän perästä ei Esko enää laskenut leikkiä Mikon
raittiudesta. Jopa kuuluvat naapurukset taas toisissaankin käyvän ja
kehuvat välin olevan entistä paremmankin.
Muutamat tietävät, että Esko jo on omannut niin paljo Mikon
mielipiteitä, ettei hänkään muka olisi enää viime jouluksi tuonut
pisaraakaan viinaa; — josko hänessä sitten perää lienee, minä en
tiedä, enkä mene takaamaan.
1893.
Tuttava.
Monista tuttavistani, kertoi muuan ystäväni, on Heikki Nierulainen,
eräs omavarainen talonmies paikkakunnallamme, omituisimpia. Hän
ei käy luonani usein, selvällä vesipäällä tuskin koskaan, mutta milloin
vaan ryypähtäneenä sattuu ohi kulkemaan, silloin poikkee hän aina
sisään.
Hän kertoo olleensa isävainajani kanssa oikein erinomainen ystävä
ja puhuu aina eräästä hevosesta, jonka hän oli isälleni myynyt; ja
minä luulen, että koko ystävyys perustuikin tuohon ainoaan
hevoskauppaan, pysyen sittemmin samallaisena, kuin nyt on minun
ja hänen välinen ystävyys.
Aina kun näen hänen tulevan, pistää vihakseni ja ajattelen:
"senkin pölhö, käyt tässä tyhmyyksilläsi ihmisiä kiusaamassa!" Mutta
välttämättömyyden vuoksi koetan ottaa asian hupaisemmalta
kannalta ja minä en koskaan voi oikeastaan häneen suuttua. Sillä

minua niin kovin huvittaa, kun hän luulettelee itsellään olevan
etuoikeuden isäni kanssa olleen "ystävyytensä" perusteella minua
kiusata ja härnäillä ja pitää minuakin kesti-ystävänään.
Hän on muuten varsin kelpo mies, niin hidas ja vakainen
liikkeissään, että äkkinäinen voisi hyvin helposti laskea hänen
tarvitsevan elääksensä vähintäin kaksisataa vuotta, jos luulisi hänen
ehtivän suorittaa noin tavalliselle talonmiehelle aijotun
elämäntehtävän. Ja kun hän, erittäinkin selvällä päällä ollen, rupee
jotain juttelemaan, loppuu kuulijalta kärsivällisyys kesken melkein
aina ja on pakotettu kiirehtimään: "no-no, mutta mitäs lopuksi?"
Mutta kun hän on juovuksissa, silloin juoksee hänen kielensä
hiukan vilkkaammin, sillä hän on hirveän epäluuloinen ja paha
haukkumaan. Kaikki muutkin sanovat hänestä sitä samaa. Vaan
kaikki antavat hänelle sen anteeksi, sillä eipä hän selvällä päällä,
herra paratkoon, liiaksi huvita itseään puhumistaidollaan.
Sitten kertoi ystäväni erään tapauksen Nierulaisen käynnistä
hänen luonaan ja sanoi että tämä on ihan samanlainen kuin kaikki
muutkin käynnit, ainakin pääpiirteissään, että mahdollisesti
satunnaiset seikat kyllä hiukan voivat muutella yksityisyyksiä. —
Tässä suvella, sanoi hän, näin ikkunasta, että Nierulainen ajaa
pihaan. Hän ei aja koskaan kovasti; nytkin käveli hevonen kuin
unissaan. Itse hän istuu rattaitten etupuolella. Viime syksyisessä
rasvassa olevat saappaat heiluivat alhaalla varattomina kuin kellon
heiluri. Ruumis etukumarassa nojailee hän kyynäspäillään polvia
vasten pitäen huolimattomasti suitsista. Notkovarsinen raskas kollo
rötköttää hampaissa vääntäen muutenkin omituisesti vääristynyttä
suuta toiselle sivulle. Ylähuuli on muuten vajonnut alahuulen sisään
ja silmät tuijottavat hevosen häntään älyttömästi ja laiskasti.

Hevonen kävelee itsestänsä tallin eteen tavalliselle paikalleen. Siinä
se saa seisoa jonkun aikaa, ennenkuin Heikki ryhtyy rattailta alas
tulemaan. Tuo kaikki kuitenkin tapahtuu vihdoin: hän tulee alas,
sitelee hevosen renkaaseen kiinni, panee heiniä eteen, pistää sitte
kädet housun taskuihin ja jää miettien katselemaan hevosen syöntiä.
Olin jo jättänyt hänet omiin puuhiinsa ja ryhtynyt muihin tehtäviin,
kunnes kuulen hänen koplailevan oven takana ja näen vihdoin
astuvan sisään.
"Hyvä-ä päivä-ä." Hän jää seisomaan oven suuhun omituisesti
suutaan vääristellen ja muljautellen sivuilleen.
"Päivää, päivää!" sanon, "käykää istumaan Nierulainen."
Hän ei katsahdakaan minuun, vaan yhä omituisesti kyräillen ja
suutansa vääristellen virkahtaa vihdoin vaatimattomasti:
"Seisoakin saa juuri … ole istumisesta lukua juuri."
"Noo, käykää istumaan."
Vähitellen alkoi hän epäröiden lähestyä muuatta tuolia oven
puolessa ja istahti siihen varovaisesti kuin petosta peläten ja rupesi
tuijottamaan yhteen kohti lattiassa juuri kuin jotain pulmaa oikein
periaatteellisesti miettien.
Yht'äkkiä hän nousi, astui epävarmasti minua kohti käännellen
päätään ja katseitaan puolelta toiselle kuin tuuliviiri, seisahtui eteeni,
ojensi minulle kätensä, joka oli ylt'yleensä niin paksussa kärryn
piessä, että minä en mielelläni olisi antanut hänen käsiinsä
käytettäväksi lapiotanikaan.

"Kättä lämmintä … köyhäll' on lämmin käsi. Vai pelkäättekö
tahrautuvan?"
Vasta tuota kysyessään vilkautti hän jonkunlaisella salaisella
vahingonilolla silmiini — ainoa ymmärrettävä ilme, minkä olin vielä
hänen silmistään saanut. Sillä välin oli hän jo tuhrinut kättänsä
takkinsa rintapieleen, ojentanut sen uudelleen minulle yhä tuo
pilkallinen vahingonilonilme silmissä. Hämilläni pistin kääppäni hänen
pikilapioonsa ajatellen saipuan ja veden hyötyä. Hän jatkoi jutellen ja
pitäen minun kädestäni:
"Rupesivat kärryt niin sianporsaita kauppaamaan, että oikein täytyi
maantiellä ruveta rasvaamaan. Renki oli jättänyt rasvaamatta, mutta
saa nyt selkänahallaan maksaa…"
Hän päästi käteni, mutta katsahti siihen vielä yhä tuo ilkeä
vahingonilo silmissä.
"Suttaantui nyt kätes, mutta anna anteeksi … vaikka teiksikin nyt
sais sanoa, mutta en mä juuri viitsi, kun sinä oot niin paljoa
nuorempi… Isäsi kanssa me oltiin hyvät tuttavat, hevoskauppojakin
tehtiin, mutta ei me ole oikein tutuiksi päästy… Sin'oot kans niin
komia ja iso päältäs jotta… Mutta ei se nyt tähän kuulu…"
Hän kaiveli pulloa povitaskustaan. Minä tiedän, että hän alkaa
minulle tarjota ryyppyä vaan sitä varten, etten siitä huoli, sillä hän
muuten ei koskaan tarjoo kenellekään, jonka tietää ryyppäävän. En
viitsi hänen syytökseensä tällä kertaa vastata mitään, sillä minä olen
niin monasti hänelle sanottavani siinä suhteessa sanonut, että olen
kokonaan toivoton, uskallanpa sanoa välinpitämätönkin, ajattelin.
Hän otti tulpan pullon suulta, ryyppäsi, pyyhkäsi pikisellä kädellään
suun "puhtaaksi" ja ojensi sen minulle.

"Eikös nyt passaa ryyppy? Ei siellä ole myrkkyä … vai vieläkö sinä
oot niin komia, ettei sovi ottaa multa ryyppyä?"
"En huoli, tiedättehän tuon ennestäänkin", virkahdin
kärsimättömästi.
"No se on punssia … kyllä sä sitä itsekin kuitenkin joka päivä
viljelet". Hän vilkautti silmiini tuo entinen ilme silmissään vielä
selvempänä.
"Piruakos tuossa", pääsee minulta kuin vahingossa.
"Noo … suutu jos tahdot, eli saisin mä nyt teiksikin sanoa, mutta
en mä sano kiusallasikaan … suutu siitäkin, jos tahdot… Ainakin
minä ryyppään, vaikka sun kuinka pistäis vihaksesi…" Ja hän oli
ottavinaan oikein pitkän ryypyn, nauttien siitä, että hän
erehdyksissään luuli sen minua harmittavan. Mutta hän ei päästänyt
paljoa suuhunsa, vaan piti kieltänsä pullon tulppana. Pullon pisti hän
vihdoinkin poveensa, vääristeli suutansa ja muljotteli silmiään
ajatuksissaan. Ja minä kuvittelen hänen ajattelevan sitä, että
mitähän hän nyt sanoisi?
"Missäs teidän emäntä on? … sopii mun nyt teiksikin sanoa, ei
suinkaan siinä suu väsy… Onko emäntä kotona vai? … olisin sillekin
ryypyn antanut, … vai ryyppääkö sekään?"
"Ei hän ole kotona."
"No missä nyt on?"
"Kylässä on."

"Soo … vai niin… On meilläkin emäntä, mutta ei se jouda kylässä
kulkemaan … vaikka en mä sitä nyt sen päälle sano, mutta sanon mä
vain, jotta roiskuu meillä paikat, kun isännälle vierahia tulee. Ja on
sitä nyt varojakin juuri, Jumalan kiitos, niin paljon että kestää
kahvipannun keittää…"
Tässä en voinut pidättää nauruani, vaan iloisesti kaklattaen pyysin
anteeksi, ettei nyt sattunut olemaan vaimoväkeä kotona, enkä itse
ollut koskaan saanut vähintäkään kokemusta kahvin keitossa.
Nyt hän nähtävästi suutahti, sillä hän kallisteli ison aikaa
äänetönnä päätänsä kuin palokärki ja minä katselin tahallani
hymyillen, vainuten hänen jokaista silmänluontiaan.
"Naura mitäs naurat, mutta se vasta nauraa, joka viimeiseksi
nauraa", hän alkoi sanella loukkaantuneella äänellä harvakseen ja
rupesi astelemaan ovea kohti.
"Jokos te nyt olette vanha?" kysäsi hän ja kääntyi vitkallisesti
takaisin. Kun olin tehnyt siitä selvän, kuulin hänen puhelevan
ollenkaan minua kuuntelematta:
"… Sopii … sopii kyllä teiksikin sanoa, vaikka en mä juuri viitsisi,
kun en mä ole kovin paljoa köyhempikään, mutta…" (Hän sanoi
tuota siitä syystä, että tiesi olevansa monta vertaa rikkaampi).
"Isäksi kyllä kelpaisin, mutta mitähän niistä… Ei meiltä ole koskaan
emäntä kadonnut… Ka kun en mä havaitse hyvästikään sanoa." Hän
tuli vitkalleen jälleen luokseni, kun seisoin selin häneen.
"No hyvästi nyt … eikä riidellä", hän sanoi ja tarjosi kättä
takapuoleltani. Minä käännyin ja annoin hänelle käteni.

"Ollaan miehet kahden puolen, mies isäskin oli." Hän puristi
kättäni armottomasti. "Sun isäsi oli siivo mies, eikä me koskaan
riidelty, vaikka hevoskauppojakin tehtiin, mutta riita meille sun
kanssasi pakkaa tulla … mikä hänessä on syynä. Oletkohan sinä niin
paljon parempi kuin minä, vai?"
"No heretkää jo tuosta."
"… Ei sinusta tulekaan koskaan sellaista miestä kuin isäsi oli, usko
jos tahdot… Ja vaikka mä sen itse sanon, niin miehen housuissa
minäkin aina olen kulkenut…"
"Mutta mitä te nyt oikeastaan kaivelette riitaa?"
Hän ei välittänyt vähääkään minun puheestani, vaan jatkoi:
"Ole niin hyvä kuin olet ja niin raitis kuin tahdot … vaikka teiksikin
juuri sais sanoa, mutta… No hyvästi nyt vielä kerran. (Hän tarttui
uudestaan käteeni). Käy panemassa piippuun, kun kuljet ja on siellä
meillä kamarikin, missä istua sopii. Tehkää nyt niin hyvin… Täytyy
sanoa teiksi, jos sitten paremmin tulisitte."
Nyt hän vihdoinkin näytti päättäneen mennä, mutta vielä kerran
hän kääntyi ovessa:
"Paljon me olimme yksissä isävainajasi kanssa, vaikka ei se
suinkaan tähän kuulu, mutta on se niin paljon että… No ei me sillä
riitele, hyvästi nyt vain ja käykää kautta, kun passaa."
Ja hän menee vihdoin ulos, syrjäytyy hetkiseksi huoneitteni
taakse, mistä sitten ilmestyy hevosensa luo. Siinä alkaa panna
piippuun, nojaillen aisaa vasten ikäänkuin jotain odotellen.

Minua kovin huvitti hänen käytöksensä. Asetuin akkunapieleen
salaa tarkastelemaan. Jokainen ruumiin liike ja käännös, jokainen
äännähdys ja askel — ne kuvaavat häntä niin omituisesti. Jospa
voisin tätä kaikkea kertoa, mutta en voi.
"Soo siinä!" Se on hiljainen, mutta samalla painava nuhde
hevoselle, joka hiukan liikahtaa, horjuttaen samalla aisaa vasten
nojailevaa isäntäänsä. Viime mainitun pää kohoo vitkaan ja kääntyy
hevosen päätä kohti.
"Soo siinä! … ei sulla ole kiiruumpi kuin mullakaan."
Mutta hän alkaa nyt kuitenkin liikkua rattaille päin, ja kömpii sinne
istumaan, ottaa suitset, nostaa nenäänsä hiukan pystymmäksi ja
katsoo pitkin hevosen selkävartta.
"Noh, lähde nyt", hän virkahtaa, nykäisee hiukan suitsista ja jää
rauhallisesti odottamaan hevosen lähtöä. Hevonen tekee yrityksen,
mutta pidättyy kohta, sillä marhaminta on jäänyt kiinni
seinärenkaaseen.
"Jassoo." Nierulainen nousee levollisesti, vähääkään
suututtelematta ottamaan sitä irti. Päästyään onnellisesti taas
maahan, on piippu sammunut ja hän rupee sitä sytyttelemään.
Mutta juuri siinä, kun jo osoittelee tulitikulla valkeata piippuunsa,
älähtää:
"Mutta vaikka mä sen itse sanon, niin aina meidän padas on
mäntä ollut, jumaliste!" Piippu jäi sytyttämättä ja hän alkoi
uudestaan astua tupaa kohti. Minä pakenin kuin nuoli toiseen
huoneeseen ja suljin oven perääni. Kuulin sieltä, miten hän itsekseen

jutteli etuhuoneessa ja teki mitä kummallisimpia ja aiheettomimpia,
mutta väliin myöskin erinomaisen teräviä ja sattuvia johtopäätöksiä,
niin että minun väkistenkin täytyi nauraa.
Vihdoin hän lähti samaa nuottia jatkaen pihalle ja venyteltyään
siellä noin puolen tuntia, lähti. Mutta juuri portissa mennessään hän
huudahti:
"Roiskuu meillä paikat, kun meille vieraina tulee, vaikka mä sen
itse sanon, mutta…"
Hän oli kovin vihoissaan siitä, ettei ollut kahvia saanut ja minä olin
aivan varma, että hän tulee uudelleen pian takaisin purkamaan
samasta asiasta, sillä hänellä näyttää pysyvän kaikki kärsityt
vääryydet mielessä ijankaikkisesti. Mutta tuo, mitä hän emännästään
sanoo, se on vaan pelkkää suun pieksämistä, sillä hän,
harvasanainen miesrukka, on niin perinpohjaisesti tohvelin alla. —
1892.
Kelvottomat.
Sekin on luultavasti järkähtämättömän luonnonlain seurauksia,
kun nuorissa renkipojissa maalla herää heti, kun ovat pikkuleivän
suuhunsa saaneet, vakava ajatus naimisiin menosta. Tuommoinen,
mielestäsi joutava miehen pala, jota olet taipuvaisempi pitämään
talon elättipoikana kuin renkinä, jolle et mielelläsi uskoisi
piippukoukkua suuhun ja jonka varmemmin uskoisi pyhä-illoin
tapaavasi lasten joukossa häränpyllyä heittämässä eli vareksen

pesillä kulkemassa, — löydätkin hänet käsikoukussa kävelemässä
täysikasvuisten tyttöjen seurassa tahi "polkkaamassa"
maantienristeyksellä ensimäisenä miehenä. Naurat tuota
katsellessasi. Luulet, että nuo tytötkin pitävät häntä mukanansa vaan
leikin vuoksi, jonkunlaisena narrattavana narrina. Naurat yhä
makeammin tuota pilaa, jonka tytöt ovat keksineet antamalla tuon
miekkosen esiintyä joukossaan täysiarvoisena tanssittajana. Sinusta
tuntuu kuin joku hivelisi lauhalla jalkapohjiasi, kun katselet miten se
nulikka on veikeä, pitää itseänsä jonakin ja luulettelee että tytöt
hänestä hyvinkin pitävät, — ja sinä ymmärrät, että he eivät voi pitää,
että se on aivan täysi mahdottomuus. Ajattelet, ettei koko avarassa
maailmassa löydy ihmistä, joka tuon kanssa naimisiin menisi.
Mutta vähän ajan kuluttua kerrotaankin, että hän meinaa ottaa
akaksensa sen tahi sen…

Kun näki Rompan Iikan ensi kertaa "joukossa" tanssipaikalla, olisi
mieluisammin uskonut hänetkin paimenpojaksi kuin rengiksi, joka
palvelee vuosipalkalla ja ryypiskelee saamansa rahat suuhunsa. Sillä
pikkuinen hän oli, niin mitättömän vähäinen että…
Mutta vuoden kuluttua siitä, kun Iikka oli ripille päässyt, rupesi
hän jo hommaamaan naimisiinmenoa Hiirosen Matin tyttären Leenan
kanssa.
"Kuka hyvä ihminen senkin ottaa?" kyselivät kummastellen
ihmiset, jotka
Iikan tunsivat.

"Ja jo sekin raukka on, joka tuostakin huolii", toiset arvelivat, jotka
Leenan tunsivat, mutta ei Iikkaa.
Kun yhdessä vihdoin heidät molemmat nähtiin, lyötiin käsiä
yhteen, naurettiin ja huudettiin:
"Voi maailmassa! Ainapa se näkyy vakka kantensa valitsevan."
Oli samanlainen se Leena kuin Iikkakin. Taisi olla vielä lapsuuden
aikuisia variksensaappaita säärissä ja korvantaustat nesteät, — oli
sellainen tolppasäärinen, möllöhuulinen tytöntynkkä. Vasta viime
kesänä oli ensi kertaa viikatteen kanssa nolastellut ja nyt talvella
töikseen teki puolia emännälle ja joskus, niinkuin leikin vuoksi,
nolasteli kehrätä vanhemman piian hurstinkude-rukilla.
Kun emäntä toisinansa haukahdellen ja pilkaten taivasteli, että kun
sellaiset kelvottomat yhteen menevät … ja hänen kanssansa samaa
köyttä nauraen veti muu väki, — silloin Leena itki ja ajatteli, että
köyhyyden tähden heitä halveksitaan. Ei suinkaan emännällä nyt ole
muuta pärmänttäämistä… Mutta ylönkatsottu mätäs monasti
kuorman kaataa! Kertoi siitä Iikalle, ja niinkuin kaksi tuhman
näköistä varpusta he sitten yhdessä livertelivät, että "jos vaan meill'
on rakkautta, niin Jumalall' on rikkautta" j.n.e. Eikä siitä usein paljon
puuttunut, ettei Iikankin miehekäs sydän heltynyt vesittelemään.
Mutta mies on aina mies, hän röyhisti rintaansa uhallisesti ja teki
kamaloita valoja siitä, että hän näyttää vielä ihmisille, miten
ylönkatsottu mätäs kuorman kaataa! Puheli Leenalle urakoista ja
summatöistä, rautatientöistä ja sen semmoista, vieläpä
Amerikastakin ja sanoi, että vaikka hän on pikkuinen, niin — maasta
se pienikin ponnistaa, ponnistaa jo!

Eikä Leena enää itkenyt. Rupesi vaan sanomaan, että ihmiset niin
kovin kadehtivat, ja että se emäntäkin vaan sentähden sellaisia
pauhaa, kun ei päästäisi häntä pois palveluksesta. Iikka luuletteli,
jopa ihan varmana sanoi, että hänen isännällänsä ja emännällänsä
on juuri samanlaiset syyt.
Mutta eihän sitä kukaan ihminen elämä-ikäänsä palvella jaksa,
eikä viitsikään. Entä sika, kun ei ole mikään pakko! Mäkirannassa
häämötti mökinpaikka, Leena näki jo itsensä lypsämässä omaa
punankyytiäänsä ja puskemassa ruskeata hampputukkaansa sen
kupeeseen. Iikalla oli hyvät saha- ja höylärustingit, Kallion sepän
tekemä veistinkirves, kierunavari ja kamaloota ja hyvä
kolmineuvoinen tuppi, jossa oli timpermannin pännä ja passari…
Lapset nukkuivat tuuditellen näissä unelmissa lutin sängyssä päitä
yhteen puskien. Olkipatja oli alla, kun ei Leena ollut vielä ehtinyt
rydinpäitä laittaa. Mutta elämä tuntui niin syöttävältä kuin hyvä
lämminleipä. Toivo hymyili jalkopäässä väännellen kummallisen
salaperäistä kameleontti-naamaansa muka sopivaan ja hyväksyvään,
vakuuttavaan hymyyn … narraili lapsia liukkaalle jäätikölle,
jättääkseen heidät kohta, jahka vaan saisi perässään niin pitkälle,
etteivät enää palaamaan pääsisi. —
Hyvät ihmiset ja kylänmiehet nauroivat ja pilkkasivat heitä, mutta
vakavalla sanalla ei kukaan ottanut neuvoaksensa ystävällisesti.
Neuvon tapaisissa puheissa oli aina ilve kärjessä ja sen tähden ei se
pystynyt. Opettavaiset akat näkyivätkin neuvoillansa tarkoittavan
sitä, että vaan saisivat tuota nuorta paria härsytetyksi kiivaammin
yhteenpäin yrittämään, että sitten kuin kaikki niiden toiveet ja
luulottelut maahan romahtaisivat saisivat täyttä kurkkua,

viisaannäköisinä huutaa: "No enkö minä sitä sanonut!" "Minähän
juuri sanoin, että niin käy, juuri niin minä sanoin."
Iikka ja Leena aavistivat että ne juuri sitä ajattelivat, mutta he
tahtoivat näyttää pitkäänenää ämmille ja antaa palttua kaikille… He
koettelivat käsivarsiansa, jotka jo alkoivat vahvistua niin ihmeesti,
muistelivat mitä osaavat tehdä ja — kas kummaa: he varmaankin
tulisivat osaamaan tehdä mitä ikänä tahtovat, jahka vaan ehtivät
oppia!
Leenakin ihastui tuosta ajatuksesta perinpohjin. Rakkautta oli kuin
sumua. Kun Leena Iikkaa katseli, tuntui kuin olisi nähnyt aavan
meren rannassa laivan, joka oli varustettu häntä viemään tanssien
elämän kareikkojen välitse, pilkan ja ylenkatseen käsistä tyyneeseen
satamaan, jossa arvosteltaisiin perin toisella tavalla, kuin ihmiset nyt
tekivät… Ja toivo yhä hymyili kameleontti-naamoineen ja pysytteli
todellisuutta koreasti piilossa selkänsä takana.
Mikkelin aikana kuulutettiin ensi kerta ja pyhäinpäivä-viikolla
ajateltiin häät pitää, oikein rahahäät. Mutta häistä ei tullut mitään,
kun ei kukaan niin paljoa luottoa antanut, että olisi häävarat kokoon
saatu. Pappilassa he kävivät kahden vihillä. Iikan mieleen painui
syvästi papin sanat, kun hän sanoi, että mies on varustettu
vahvemmalla järjellä ja suuremmilla luonnonkirjoilla kuin nainen.
Hänen rintansa paisui jalosta oman arvonsa tunnosta, tuli
ehdottomasti ajatelleeksi, että kyllä se pastori sen tässäkin paikassa
oikein tietää, miksei se sitä tietäisi! Leena se rupesi pehmenemään,
kun pappi sanoi, että Iikan pitää kohdella häntä kuin heikompaa
astiaa. Hän ymmärsi sen vertaukseksi, sillä tunsi oikein
todellisuudessa olevansa vantteratekoisempi kuin Iikka, niin että siltä
