Meaning of Chart Charts are used to provide non-narrative representation of data. These representations could be with tables, diagram or graph. The basic chart types are Pie charts, Bar charts and Line graphs . Pie charts are used for comparison of values , especially when there is need to pick one item out of many. Bar charts are used to show differences between things . Bar charts are also called column graph, Line graph are used to plot trends between variables . To plot, temperature against pressure, line graph is the best option.

Selecting Appropriate Chart Type: Hint: Open ‘employee.csv’ Highlight Cell A1 to B8 as shown above. Click Insert and Select “Column Chart”.

Use the file ‘rainfall.csv’ create chart to compare monthly data for town A and B

Filling Sectors in Graphs I. Select the sector you want to fill twice. Then you can drag it out. II. Click the first icon under “Series”. III. Select “Solid Fill”, and choose the specified colour .

Part of a Chart (Labelling)

Open the file being used. Select 2-D. Click “+” icons. It opens ‘Chart Elements” Select “Axis Titles” and check The Primary Horizontal and Primary Vertical. Type “Number of Staff” And “Job Title” respectively.

Adding Secondary Axes: Combo Chart allows two values to be compared Open the file rainfall.csv. Highlight dates and data for Town A: A1-B15 and D1-D15. Select Insert Chart , Select button to create Combo Chart . Choose chart type as Line since we are comparing two values. Change “Rainfall in Millitres ” to Line. Go to Axis and Choose Vertical Value. Min = 0, Max = 300. Major = 50, Minor = 10.

What differences can you spot between these two charts?

I. Click Chart Element. II. Click the down arrow beside Format Axis. III. Select Vertical Axis (Value) . Set the minimum bound to 0 and maximum to 250. Repeat the above steps for Secondary Vertical Axis Click the down arrow beside Format Axis. Select Secondary Vertical Axis (Value) . Set the minimum bound to -2 and maximum to 24. Under units, major =2.0, minor = 0.4
