Capacity building of Extension Personnel and Farmers, Training of Farmers, Farmwomen and Rural Youth, Farmers Training centre (FTC), Extension Education Institutes (EEI)/ EES SRIDHARAN S 2021009024 AEX 321 Communication and Extension Methodologies for Transfer of Technology(2+1) COURSE TEACHER Dr.S.Srivara Buddhi Bhuvaneshwari Assoc. Professor ( Agrl . Extension)

Capacity building is improving the knowledge skill and attitudes of individual, organisation, and communities to achieve their goals

TRAINING FOR DEVELOPMENT Training has become an inseparable part of HRD. Training is the art of increasing the knowledge and skill of an employee for doing a particular job. It is the process of aiding employees to gain effectiveness in their present or future work through the development of appropriate habits of thought, action, skills, knowledge and attitude.(Milton Mall, 1980)

NEED FOR TRAINING Needs for training can be fixed down to the following: Rapid changes in technologies and jobs people do. Immediate and long term skill shortage Changes in the expectation and composition of work force. Competition and market pressure for improvement in quality of products and services.

TRAINING PROCESS The training process has three phases as follows: Pre-training; It starts with understanding the situation, which calls for behaviour that is more effective. It begins with the description of the job.

Training phase; The trainee is exposed to new subject matter, new people, new atmosphere and the participant would be at unease for a while. With several questions in his mind, there will be no guarantee that the trainee will learn what he has chosen to learn. Finally, the participant would explore in training situation what interests him the more.

Post- training phase; Here the situation changes, the participant goes back to his work place, meets his friends and family members. Newly learned skills undergo modifications to fit in with the work situation. Participants may have the contact with he training institution even after the training programme.

TRAINING TO FARMERS There is a regular farmer training programme in all agricultural universities. For such training the following points should be considered. Time of holding the training. Duration of the course. Venue of the course. Production cum demonstration camps and discussion groups of the farmers.

1.Time of holding the training: It should be at the convenience of the farmers i.e., when they are comparatively free from such of the agricultural operations. This will differ according to the seasons and climate. In case T.N March to May for Kharif crop and August to September for rabi crop is ideal time for conducting training courses in Agriculture.

2. Duration of course: For farmers who are engaged in farming, a one week course is sufficient for special topics such as use of irrigation facilities and water management, operation of implements and plant protection etc , it may be of two or three days duration.

3. Venue of course: Besides physical facilities, the appropriate environment under which the course is to be conducted. i.e , where the farmers car see the actual crop, method demonstrations, operations with some machines and implements or some treatments such as fertilizer application, venue has to be given due considerations.

4. Production cum demonstration camps and discussion groups of the farmers: These should be arranged in the villages because the farmers cannot afford to remain away from their farms and homes. These should be organized before each main crop. The duration should be 1-2 days only, and the trainees or participants should be from the same village or groups of nearby villages, so that the farmers can walk back to their home the same evening. This will provide technical knowledge to the farmers right in their villages, and the topics can be related to their local problems.

ACTIVE TRAINING PROGRAMME Following are the steps to conduct an active training programme; Prepare yourself mentally and have thorough preparation well in advance. Arrange the physical environment to create permanent impressions of the program. Greet participants and establish program. Get the best from the first thirty minutes of trainers Review the agenda and should be clear of what is going to be done Invite the feedback and give opportunity to present their views as well.

FARMER TRAINING CENTER (FTC) A farmer training center (FTC) is a facility that provides farmers with training, information, and services. FTCs can help farmers develop skills and knowledge in agroecology, and provide modular training that can lead to a "Green certificate". FTCs also offer agricultural demonstrations, and can act as an information center for farmers about market prices, input types, and demand.

TRAINING GIVEN TO FARMERS BY FTCs Good agricultural practices: Topics such as planting techniques, irrigation, pesticides, crop rotation, and crop storage after harvest Contract farming: Topics such as organic farming, rain water harvesting, agricultural machinery, integrated farming system, integrated nutrient management, integrated pest and disease management, bio-fuels, agri -entrepreneurship, value addition, fodder production, water management, and post-harvest technology.

Farming as an inclusive business: Topics such as empowering women to make purchasing decisions and learn good agricultural practices alongside their husbands Vegetable production: Topics such as vegetable production and related areas High tech horticulture crop cultivation: Topics such as recent advancement in the field of horticulture science Advanced dairy cattle farming: Topics such as breeding, nutrition, management, reproduction, and health

Extension Education Institute (EEI) The Extension Education Institute (EEI) is a regional training institute that provides capacity building to extension functionaries in the agricultural development departments and organizations of the country. The EEI designs and improves training programs based on needs for line department officials of client states. These programs help officials capitalize on their strengths and face challenges in the respective fields.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India has established four EEIs for four regions of the country. Southern Region: Hyderabad, AP Northern Region: Nilokheri , Haryana Western Region: Anand, Gujarat NE Region: Jorhat, Assam

ROLE OF EEIs Extension education can help people learn how to live better by learning ways to improve their farm, home, and community institutions. It can also help spread new information and innovations to farmers. It also strengthens communities by providing opportunities for residents to connect and share resources. Extension education can also help empower people, which is an integral part of the rural development process.

CONCLUSION The refresher training keeps the specialists, subject matter officers, extension supervisors, and frontline workers updated and enables them to add to the knowledge and skills they have already.
