Abstract
Students' diverse learning progress exists in every classroom based on physical,
social and cultural phenomena. This study aimed to discover what strategies can
be used to deal with a student named Santosh Pokhrel’s diverse learning
progress along with based on curriculum in classroom finding the weak points
to create better learning environment. The data gathering consisted of not only
multistructured interview, regular observations, filling questionnaire, group
discussion home visit but online articles also. Qualitative and quantitative
approach is utilised to analyse the data. The study reflected on the practices of
addressing students' attitude behaviour and their influence at study with
recommendations and suggestions to would be action plan.
Key words: diverse, phenomena, multistructured, strategies, influence
Background of the Study
Simply speaking, a cases study is strategy and an empirical inquiry that
investigates a phenomenon within its real-life context. A case study is a
descriptive and exploratory analysis of a person, group or even an institution.
Generally, teachers prepare case studies of students to find their real life
situation at study. As there are various students from different background,
ethnicity, ages, culture, economic status etc. The any background may have
positive or negative influence in real life. It means all the students do not have
same characteristics in each class. They may have different ability according to
their area of interest, physical ability, mental alertness and social awareness.
As I have understood, teacher is a person who observes all the qualities of all
the students belong to his/her teaching class. His/her main duty is not only

teaching but also to find out students potentiality hidden inside or find out the
causes of brilliancy and dullness. He /she can give suggestion to improve in
teaching learning activities for students by different ways. This research is one
of them. The case study of the student may be beneficial for school, parents,
teachers and relatives. It may help in any negative scenario regarding to a
student to find out his/her attitudes, behaviours, educational progress and
hindrances in his/her studies in future. During the period of teaching in class-
eight , I found the students having different abilities like brilliant, dutiful,
discipline, dull, poor at study, careless, rude, ill-mannered students. Among
them, Santosh Pokhrel of class 8 has become the subject matter of case study
to find his real problem behind why he seems irresponsible, careless, dull, and
having very poor performance at study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In the process of preparing case study, the case is selected after I found the
following problems:
-The student always hesitate to read text and answer about real situation
-He seems naughty and rude in class
-Other students ever complain about him
-His academic performance seems very poor repeatedly
-He does not seem interested in remedial classes and bunks most of them
1.3 Objectives of the Study
There are certain objectives to run case study .They are as follow:
- to find out the problems during his study caused poor performance
-to know different qualities of the boy like his social, cultural economic and
educational performance
-to study about his area of interest, behaviour and attitude
The above mentioned objectives can be fulfilled after the study of the case and
would be easier for action plan.

1.5 Limitation of the case Study
The study is only belongs to Mr.Santosh as a sample for similar case trying to
reach in the reliable cause and effect. To make the research cheaper and time
bounded, my effort is here to make writing from being vague here. So, the
limitations of the study are as follows.
-Personal profile of the student
-Social, economic, educational and family profile of the student
-Student’s interest, behaviours and attitudes as I can
-Teachers’ friends and school’s attitude and behaviours towards the case
-Comment, perception, and appreciation from family

1.6 Significance of the case study
The study is based on the real data collected from questionnaire, term wise mark
sheet, regular observation, information obtained from teachers and parents. It
is In-depth and detailed investigation of a case to analyse and it is related to
contextual position. So, it helps in bringing the understanding of a complex issue
and meet the target.

1.7 Methodology of the case study
Different methods, tools and techniques are used .Most of them are primary
and very less are secondary sources.
Personal face to face interview, home visit, consultant to parents and teachers
are done. Direct and indirect observation like collection of friend’s point of view,
consultant to subject teachers and school, questionnaire fill up etc. are used as
primary sources during the time of research and picked up one felt to be done.
Similarly, mark sheets of all three terms of the year, library book, internet etc.
are as secondary sources studied and analysed in the research.

1 Social, Cultural, Economic, and Family profile of the Student
Students’ academic achievement is related to different family background
factors such as socio-economic, cultural, and cognitive factors. students may
come from a home in which children are told to be seen and not heard, so
speaking up and participating in class seems wrong to them. Or, what some
teachers see as a behaviour disorder is just the contrast between the culture at
home and at school. Our students, for example, tend to be quiet in class, and
making eye contact with teachers is considered inappropriate. In contrast, most
European American children are taught to value active classroom discussion and

to look teachers directly in the eye to show respect, while their teachers view
students’ participation as a sign of engagement and competence (Edward 1961).
They play pivotal role in students study and manner. Related to this context,
Santosh does not interact and participate in classroom activities as I expected.
He does not seem respectful and come in contact to limited friends. The study
shows he is not social and always leads to sufferings.
A kid’s education starts from home. As we say parents are their first teachers
and they have a key role in shaping up their character. A balance of education
at home and school moulds a student’s actual learning. Be a helping hand in
their educational journey and travel with them with true inspiration. Parental
encouragement had played a crucial role in successful students. Their role is not
limited to home but involvement in school activities too. Regarding to it,
Santosh’s family is aware of the importance of education and simple liked by
many people according to my study. Face to face interview shows that they are
very cooperative and respectful but they hardly concern about his study,
homework, time spent to parents etc. and no parental presence at school to
concern about his study. As his mother said father is in abroad, she can’t give
her time to his study more and she doesn’t have idea about his study only rely
upon school. Santosh, is from middle class family. Their main income is
remittance around one lakhs monthly that can easily fulfil their requirements.
According to parents, his each demand is fulfilled and his personal preparation
to school is being done even. It may be the cause, he easily denies his parents’
request. According to his mother, he pretends learning but he seems playing
with media and gazettes and being misled during study hour at home. As a
result, he didn’t meet the basic target at study.
2.2 Educational Trend and Achievement
The school is renowned for providing quality education with highly qualified and
experienced human resource .It creates encouraging, cooperative, collaborative
and enthusiastic learning environment for learning. It conducts co-curricular
activities like quiz, debate and speech competition and organizes cultural
programs, and inter-house sports competition. The teachers give test,
observation and checklist for students’ achievement evaluation and for the
continuous assessment of the students’ learning with transparent behaviour
and avoidance of greed and fear. However, he has no such entheuastic
participation. Despite the acknowledgment of important differences among
learners. Teachers could not bring such changes at his study. His educational

achievement of all three terms of the year is as follows but it seems only
satisfactory.

In this qualitative and quantitative research, it is true that all the Students
use the same textbooks and the same materials for learning in the same
class. They may work at a different pace, but they study the same content
and work through the same curriculum (Futture2015). Of course, school
use the same tests for all to measure the success of the learning.
Responses from administrators, teachers, and students indicated few
common trends in the themes that emerged from the results obtained.
The study and analyses of mark sheet has shown in the above table and
bar chart that Santosh has secured 1.6 in Nepali in first term whereas the
class highest GP is 4 and average GP is 3. Similarly, 1.6 GP in second term
and 1.6 GP in third term. This is the evidence that he has secured below
average in all 9 subjects in all three terms. Without even realization, he
accelerates his similar behaviour and attitude for this result .In this way.
He is selected among the 42 students of the class as a case from academic
point of view for necessary steps would be action plan in future.

2.3 Interest, Attitude, Group Behaviour and Obstacles
The quality of student learning and achievement in this period has
become a matter of public discourse and policy. Most importantly, it also
links directly to how we engage with social media, how the vast volumes

of messages, information, videos, images, and the like we are engaged
with, in an open/inclusive or a closed/exclusive manner to understand
about students learning (Parker2006) .Using the case study, the
qualitative research identified instructional practices and connection
between motivation, learning, and student’s perception of learning.
According to my research, Mr.Santosh wants to pass his time with
past homework in class rather than doing recent class work. He shows his
involvement in unwanted activities and says ‘Studying is hard work - so I'd
better keep my head down’. He has no sense of gratitude. He wants to escape
from his responsibility given, he copies friends’ writing even after the warning
of teacher. He makes circle of same type of other students and does bully to
other. Simply, he bunks his remedial classes. He is the most problematic student
who has no symptoms of better study for these years. Disobedience,
carelessness dominating nature, negligence, negativity, rude behaviour and
stupidity, lack of teamwork, empathy, and support between friends are the main
obstacles at his study. Other alternate ways by action plan should be
implemented to such type of case for better result in future.
2.4 Problems for the Educational Improvement to the student and teachers
point of view
- he feels himself very weak at study and does not want to read.
- his mind is distracted by his home, parent, games, food, and
adolescence factor etc.
- his introvert nature
- his attention is focussed to make group and bully in class
- difficult questions beyond his level of learning in exam
- lack of respect to him and feeling of uniformity continues to
dominate his learning
- frequent complain of class captains, frequent warning of class
teacher, supervisors and even subject teachers
All the teachers evaluated their students to determine how far
they have improved in their performance over time. Team Effort
emerged as the major code and collectively accepted to the
problems that confronted such students and how they impacted his
learning. Such problems were similar to the ones students
presented while responding to what they do before and after
school. To justify the connection be-tween teachers and students

in the school, the teachers knew their student’s challenges and
were able to help the students overcome such obstacles along with
family responsibility. Teachers’ response was positive with passion
showing his behaviour in classroom and outside. The major theme
from their responses was poor Performance of the student and his
negative behaviours.

2.5 Conclusion and Recommendations and Suggestions
Every student deserves to be treated with respect. Every student should have
an opportunity to reach his or her individual potential. Every student should
master specific basic skills. The challenge is to identify what should be the same
in school and what should be different. The case study recognizing this case can
help student succeed in a school culture where expectations and
communication are being familiar to meet the target.
The research recommendations encompass the policy formation and
implementation that suit to sampling students to overcome such problems for
better understanding.
The diversity of the student’s backgrounds made his learning progress even
more diverse. He should be given such type of classes that make him feel free to
learn without hesitation.
Parents should be aware of their child’s problem in different areas.
The success and failure of the student depends on School administration,
teachers and parents. So, we must be careful and dedicated in his preparation
and development.
Inspirational and motivational classes should be organized timely .Resource
management and quality improvement should be focussed.
Parents should council showing value to their own voices, histories, and
cultures.
Parents’ and teachers’ feedback is valuable on the impact of those media and
gazettes at home and in the classrooms.
It is concluded that collective efficacy and school culture are important in
motivating achievement with teachers and students.
