HIGHLIGHT OF RECENT ASSAM EARTHQUAKE Date -28 April 2021 Time -07:51 am Wednesday Magnitude – 6.4 Ritcher scale Depth - 17 km from surface Epicentre - Northeast of sonitpur district of Assam is about of 80 km from Guwahati Areas Affected – China ,Bangladesh , Bhutan , Myanmar & India Fault – kopili fault No of injured -12 Killed -02
INTRODUCTION Earthquake is a sudden shaking of earth due to movement of rocks along a fault Faulting or breaking of rocks under stress accumulation after strain energy is released due to movement of techtonic plates.
Case study of Assam Earthquake Recently an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on Ritcher scale hit Assam having Epicentre is about 80km North east of Sonitpur district in Assam at an aerial distance of 11 km from nearest town of Dekiajuli. Mercalli intensity ( measure of damage )reported to VI (Strong) The preliminary analysis shows that the event is located near to Kopili Fault closer to Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT) , so the North east is highly prone to earthquake occurences. A total 6-no of Aftershocks of magnitude range of M3.2 to M4.7 are located with in 2hours 30 minutes from the time of occurrence of main shock of M: 6.4

K0PILI FAULT ZONE
SEISMIC ZONE OF INDIA
IMPACTS Multi storey structure in Nagano which tilted to its side and leaned against adacent building . Cracks also appeared in walls of homes and commercial building were damaged after an earthquake occur. A few vehicles were damaged when bricks fell on them . Landslides and liquefaction on ground were reported . Two people in Kanrup metro and Nagaon district died of hearth attack . Bhairavkund hills in udalgiri which is quite closer to epicentre collapsed after earthquake. Cracks on partition wall, false ceiling, collapse of boundary wall
Precautions An Appropriate foundation : creating a flexible foundation to build the structure on top of the pads that separate the building from ground and its base away from the soil . Seismic Dampers : It absorbs destructive energy ptotecting the building ,generally large the dampers diameter more force it can handle . Structure reinforcement : to strengthening a buildings structure against potential earthquake we use shear wall and braced frame to transfer lateral forces from the floors and roof to the foundation. Material integrity : Structural steel is one of the most ductile materials can tolerate plastic deformation ,having high ductility can absorb large amount of energy without breaking , while brick ,concrete are low ductility materials. Ecofriendly ductile cementitious material (FRC) Fiber reinforced concrete similar to steel
