EFFECTIVENESS OF ADVANCE ORGANIZER MODEL OVER CONVENTIONAL METHODS OF TEACHING SOCIAL SCIENCE AT SECONDARY LEVEL RESEARCH PROPOSAL Submitted to : CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF KARNATAKA CENTRE FOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR PhD INTERVIEW IN EDUCATION Presented by:- Sanchana Srivastava Form no:CUK240000079

Introduction An Advance Organizer is a valuable tool for teachers, helping students understand, retain, and remember new material by connecting it to prior knowledge . An experimental study comparing the effectiveness of the Advance Organizer Model with traditional teaching methods in Social science will find a significant improvement in students' achievement scores. The study will conclude that the Advance Organizer Model is more effective for teaching social science concepts than conventional methods.

Advance Organizer Model What is an Advance Organizer Model? A cognitive instructional strategy designed to promote the learning and retention of new information. Developed by David Ausubel , it focuses on how knowledge is organized , how the mind processes new information , and how teachers can apply these ideas to curriculum and learning. Learning Process Learning occurs in a top-down, deductive manner . The process consists of three phases: presentation of an advance organizer , presentation of the learning task, and strengthening the cognitive organization. Role of the Teacher The teacher organizes the subject matter and presents it through lectures, readings, and tasks. The teacher controls the intellectual structure and helps students relate new material to prior knowledge using advance organizers. Role of the Learner The learner's primary role is to master new ideas and integrate information . Advance organizers help students differentiate new material from previously learned content, leading to successful acquisition of knowledge.

Objectives of the Study To study the achievement of IX standard students in Social Science. To study the achievement of IX standard students in Social Science when they were taught by conventional method of teaching. To study the effects of Advance Organizer Model on the achievement in Social Science of class IX students. To compare the achievement in Social Science of class IX students while using Advance Organizer Model and traditional teaching methods.

Operational Definitions of Key Terms Advance Organizer model: AOM is a plan or pattern of teaching designed by (AOM) David P. Ausubel , based on the theory of meaningful learning. Traditional / Conventional Teaching Method: It refers to Lecture method used by the concerned subject teacher for teaching in the classroom. Achievement: It refers to academic achievement obtained by Students in researcher made achievement test.

Research Method For the present study, post test only experimental control design was adopted. The design used to conduct the study was “post-test only control equivalent group design” which according to Gay(1996), is a true experimental design This design was used because it controls for maximum number of internal and external sources of experimental validity. Moreover, due to small groups, pre-test is being used. Therefore, this design is able to determine the exact of amount of change attributable to the independent variable alone. Two groups were randomly formed through matching the subjects in terms of their pre-test scores.

Variables of the Study Teaching model namely Advance organizer Model (AOM) was the independent variable and Academic achievement was the dependent variable in this experimental study.

Hypothesis & Tools Used There exists no significant difference between achievement in Social Science of class IX students while using Advance Organizer Model and Conventional Method of teaching. For the purpose of data collection the researcher will construct two achievement tests ( Pre and Post test ) from the selected four topics of Social science. Pre-test will be conducted to know the depth knowledge of students about Social science. Post- test will based on the content material of selected four topics of Social science taught.

Sample The sample will consist of 76 students studying in IX class in secondary schools located at Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand state. The school will be selected by purposive sampling technique and the students will be selected by cluster sampling technique. The sample will be divided into two groups as per the strength of each section of class IX in a school. Group (A) will consist of 36 students taken as experimental group which was taught through Advance Organizer Model and Group (B) will consist of 40 students named as controlled group was taught through conventional Methods .

Procedure of Data Collection In the present study experimental design will be used. First achievement test (Pre-test) will be administrated to class IX students to know their achievement in Social science before treatment . Then both the group will be taught selected four topics of social science for a period of three months. One of them known as controlled group will be taught by the conventional method of teaching and the second group known as experimental group will be taught by using Advance Organizer Model. After the treatment of three months an achievement test ( Post Test) in social science from the selected four topics will be constructed and administered on the sample of both the groups. The scores obtained by each student of both controlled group and experimental group will be analysed and interpreted by using descriptive and inferential statistics .

Delimitations of Study The study was delimited in the following aspects:- The study would be confined to 100 students of class IX. The study will further be restricted to four selected concepts of Social Science. The present study will be conducted on IX class students of secondary schools located at Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand.

Expected Outcomes of the Study The Teaching of Social Science by the Advance organizer Model will be better than by the conventional methods of teaching of Social Science. Advance organizer Model of teaching will appeal to the students very much and they will feel encouraged to learn the subject matter with interest which was present to experimental group during the experiment.

Conclusion The Teaching of Social Science by the Advance organizer Model will be better than by the conventional methods of teaching of Social Science. Advance organizer Model of teaching will appeal to the students very much and they will feel encouraged to learn the subject matter with interest which was present to experimental group during the experiment.

Thankyou !
