FR A CTIONS AND DECIMALS JNV SEONI
PROPER FRACTION A proper fraction is a fraction that represent a part of a hole . For example- ¾ , ½ , 3/5 are proper fractions . In proper fraction denominator is bigger than numerator. JN I
IMPROPER FRACTION An improper fraction is a combination of whole and a proper fraction. For example- 7/4 , 8/5 , 4/3 etc are improper fractions. In improper fraction numerator is bigger than denominator.
MIXED FRACTION- A Whole number and a fraction combined into one mixed number . Example- 1½ ( one and a half ) is a mixed fraction.(Also called a Mixed Number) JNV SEONI
MULTIPLICATION OF A FRACTION BY A WHOLE NUMBER Observe the picture at the left . Each shaded part is ¼ part of a circle . How much will the two shaded parts represent together? They will represent fig. ( 1) ¼ + ¼ = 2 X ¼ Combining the two shaded parts , we get Fig(2) . It represents 2/4 part of a circle. Fig(2) The shaded portion in Fig(1) taken together are the same as the shaded portion in Fig(2) , i.e. we get Fig.(3) = Fig(3) 2 X ¼ = 2/4
MULTIPLICATION OF A FRACTION BY A FRACTION We learn to fin the product like ½ X 1/3 (a)How do we find 1/3 of a hole ? We divide the whole in three equal parts . Each of the three parts represents 1/3 of the whole . Take one part of these three parts , and shade it as shown in Fig (4). two and Fig( 4 ) Fig.(5) How will you find ½ of this shaded part ? Divide this one-third ( 1/3 ) shaded part into two equal parts . Each of these two parts represents ½ of 1/3 i.e. ½ X 1/3 . Fig(5) Take out 1 part of these two and name it ‘A’ . ‘A’ represents ½ X 1/3 What fraction is ‘A’ of the whole ? For this , divide each of the remaining 1/3 parts also into equal parts . How many such equal parts do you have now? There are six such equal parts. ‘A’ is one of these parts . So , ‘A’ is 1/6 of the whole? The whole was divided in 6 = 2 X 3 parts and 1 = 1 X 1 part was taken out of it. Thus , ½ X 1/3 = 1/6 .
Fig( 6 ) DIVISION OF WHOLE NUMBER BY A FRACTION Let us find 1 ÷ ½ We divide a hole into a number of equal parts such That each part is half of the hole . The number of Such half ( ½ ) parts would be 1 ÷ ½ . Observe the Fig.(6) . How many half parts do you see? There are two half parts. So 1 ÷ ½ = 2 . Also 1 X 2/1 = 2 . Thus 1 ÷ ½ = 1 X 2/1 Similarly 3 ÷ ¼ = number of ¼ parts obtained when each of the 3 whole , are divided into ¼ equal parts = 12. Fig.(7) Fig(7) Observe also that , 3 X 4/1 = 12 . Thus 3 ÷ ¼ = 3X4?1=12
RECIPROCAL OF A FRACTION JNV SEONI The number 2/1 can be obtained by interchanging the numerator and denominator of ½ or by inverting ½ . Similarly 3/1 is obtained by inverting 1/3. Observe these products- 7 X 1/7 = 1 , 5/4 X 4/5 = 1 , 2/3 X 3/2 = 1 The non-zero numbers whose product with each other is 1 , are called the reciprocal of each other. So reciprocal of 5/9 is 9/5 and the reciprocal of 9/5 is 5/9.
DIVISION OF A FRACTION BY ANOTHER FRACTION We can now find 1/3 ÷ 5/6 5/6 = 1/3 X reciprocal of 5/6 = 1/3 X 6/5 = 2/5 Similarly , 8/5 ÷ 2/3 = 8/5 X reciprocal of 2/3 =8/5 X 3/2 =12/5
MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
Q.(1) The value of 0.3 X 0.3 X 0.3 is (a) 2.7 (b) 0.27 (c) 0.027 (d) 27
Q.(2) The value of ¾ ÷ 1/16 is (a) 3 / 64 (b) 3 / 4 (c) 1 / 12 (d) 12
Q.(3) The value of ( 13 / 4 - 7/3 ) (a)4/3 (b ) 1 1 /12 (c)1/12 (d) 7/12
Q.(4) The value of 0.3 X 1000 is (a) 30 (b) 0.00003 (c) 0.0003 (d) 300
Fill in the blanks- The reciprocal of 17/3 is ----------- If 4/3 is subtracted from 5/3 , we get ----- (3) The value of 0.237 X 100 is ------ (4)½ of 30/7 is ------ (5)The product of two proper fractions is ----- ---------than each of the fractions that are multiplied.
True / False The product of 231/119 and 117/118 is greater than 231/119. The product of 17/25 and 117/225 is greater than 17/25. The product of 1735/2001 and 2734/2724 is greater than 1735/2001. 1/3 of 4/5 is greater than ¾ of 8/7. (5)5.45 can also be written as 109/20
