CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD CHALKBOARD The recommended size of a chalkboard is 5m*6m The surface of the chalkboard should be rough enough to hold the writing on the board. The writing should be easily removable with a cloth or a foam duster The chalkboard should be mounted on an appropriate height within the reach of the teacher and visibility of students.
GUIDELINES FOR USING CHALKBOARD Divide the chalkboard in 3 different parts. Write clearly in cursive handwriting the important points of the topic on the chalkboards. Write clearly and avoid overcrowding of information. The size of letters on chalkboard is between 6cm*8cm Avoid spelling mistakes. Do not talk when writing on a chalkboard. Face the group after writing and continue the discussion. Extreme lower corner of chalkboard should not be used.
Do not fill board, only important and necessary points to be written. Do not use abbreviations. Use color chalks for providing contrast. Stand on one side of chalkboard while explaining a point to students. Use a pointer to draw the attention on written material. Use soft cloth piece or foam duster for rubbing. Chalkboard, it should be rubbed vertically first and then horizontally.
Plan the use of chalkboard and everything needed for using the chalkboard should be ready before the class begins, i.e. collection of chalk, duster etc. It should be ensured that chalkboard should be well lit by natural or artificial means. Diagrams and pictures can be sketched before the class. It helps not only save time but also permit teacher to draw a neater sketch. Occasionally students may be asked to write or draw diagrams on the chalkboard.
ADVANTAGES OF CALKBOARD The chalkboard is convenient visual aid for group teaching. The chalkboard is economical teaching aid as it can be used again and again. The chalkboard can be used for drawing enlarged illustrations from the textbooks. The chalkboard can be easily used for giving lesson notes for students. It can be used to restore the attention of the group. It provides scope for creative and decorative work. It is inexpensive and no electricity is required. Sequential development of content can be done effectively.
Charts can be hung on the board. Teacher can review the whole lesson for the benefit of students with the help of chalkboard. Mistakes can be rubbed off and corrected instantly.
DEMERITS OF CHALKBOARD It makes students heavily dependent on the teacher. It does not care for the individual needs of students. It makes the lesson a dull routine. The data information cannot be stored. It is limited for small group. It makes chalk powder to spread and inhaled by the teacher and student. Teacher lose eye contact while writing in chalkboard. This method is poor for teacher who has poor handwriting.
EFFECTIVE USE OF CHALKBOARD We can use the chalkboard effectively by the following; Be kind and gentle while using the chalkboard. Layout the plan in advance. Arrange and check for lighting, angle and glare. Check for cleanliness. Keep the board in comfortable height. Stand on the side of the board. Use colored chalks, underlines, pointers and style in writing.
Writings should be bright, readable, uniform, straight, and horizontal. Drawings and pictures should be purposeful, easy and neat.
