LESSON 3: MORAL DILEMMAS 1 Intended Learning Outcome: 1. Explain moral dilemma as a moral dilemma as a moral experience 2. Distinguish between a moral and a false dilemma

• A moral dilemma is a problem in the decision-making between two possible options, neither of which is absolutely acceptable from an ethical perspective. • It is also preferred to as ethical dilemma. The Oxford Dictionary defines ethical dilemma as a “decision-making problem between two possible moral imperatives, neither of which is unambiguously acceptable or preferrable. •It is sometimes called an ethical paradox in moral philosophy. MORAL DILEMMA 2

Moral dilemmas are situations where two or more moral values or duties make demands on the decision-maker, who can only honor one of them, and thus will violate at least one important more concern, no matter what he or she decides to do. TYPES OF DILEMMA Epistemic moral dilemmas Ontological moral dilemmas involve situations wherein two or more moral requirements conflict with each other and that the moral agent hardly knows which of the conflicting moral requirements takes precedence over the other. involve situations wherein two or more moral requirements conflict with each other, yet neither of these conflicting moral requirements overrides each other. 6

TYPES OF DILEMMA Self-imposed moral dilemmas World-imposed moral dilemmas caused by the moral agent's wrongdoings. means that certain events in the world place the agent in a situation of moral conflict. 6

TYPES OF DILEMMA Obligation moral dilemmas Prohibition moral dilemmas situations in which more than one feasible action is obligatory, involve cases in which all feasible actions are forbidden. 6

TYPES OF DILEMMA Single-agent moral dilemmas Multi-person moral dilemmas the moral agent is compelled to act on two or more equally the same moral options but she cannot choose both. The multi-person dilemma occurs in situations that involve several persons like a family, an organization, or a community who is expected to come up with consensual decision on a moral issue at hand. 6

· False dilemma are situations where the decision-maker has a moral duty to do one thing, but it is tempted or under pressure to do something else. A false dilemma is a choice between right and a wrong unlike a moral dilemma where both choices are wrong. 3 FALSE DILEMMA

STRUCTURAL DILEMMA IN A WORLD ORGANIZATION LIKE THE UN structural dilemma in a world organization like the UN is the problem of the balance between world order and national sovereignty re-stated as the balance between the measure of international authority essential to the establishment of an organized common pence and the continued freedom of action of the separate members of the world community or the balance between interdependence and independence. 8
