Learning Outcome 3:
Converted and solved practical and
applied problems using the English
and Metric standard of
measurements.

CONVERSION OF UNIT MEASUREMENTS
Many quantities can be expressed in several different ways. For
example, in the metric system:
1 meter = 10 decimeters = 100 centimeters = 100 millimeters
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters = 1,000,000 = 1,000,000 millimeters
For metric to metric conversion, where the conversion factor is in power
of 10, we multiply if the number is from a higher unit to a lower unit and
divide the number if it is from lower unit to higher unit. For one step, use 10;
for two steps, use 102 or 100; for three steps, 103 or 1000; and so on, and
so forth.

CONVERSION OF UNIT MEASUREMENTS
Higher unit to a lower unit.
1. Convert 225 meters to millimeters.
Solution: 3 steps going down, so we
multiply by 10
3
or 1000.
225 x 1000 = 225,000 mm
2. Convert 8225 dekameters to
decimeters.
Solution: 2 steps going down, so we
multiply by 10
2
or 100.
8225 x 100 = 822,500 dm

CONVERSION OF UNIT MEASUREMENTS
Lower unit to higher unit.
1. Convert 545 millimeters to meters.
Solution: 3 steps going up, so we
divide by 1000.
545 ÷ 1000 = 0.545 m
2. Convert 5450 decimeters to
dekameters.
Solution: 2 steps going up, so we divide
by 100.
5450 ÷ 100 = 54.50 Dk
