OBJECTIVES: Describe contemporary organizational behavior-its characteristics and importance. Differentiate universal versus contingency approaches. Explain the interactionist perspective on behavior in organizations

CONTEMPORARY ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR has two fundamental characteristics interdisciplinary focus descriptive in nature Psychology Sociology Anthropology Political Science Economy Engineering Medicine immaturity of the field complexities in studying human behavior lack of valid, reliable and accepted definitions and measures FIGURE 1

IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR 1 . It influences the lives of people. 2. It enables us to adopt a managerial perspective. 3. It clarifies the factors that affect how managers manage. 4. It describes the complex human context in which managers work and to define the problems associated with it. 5. It isolates important aspects of the manager’s job and offers specific perspectives onthe human side of management: people as orgnizations, people as resources, and people as people.

UNIVERSAL VERSUS CONTINGENCY APPROACHES FIGURE 2

UNIVERSAL APPROACH - presumes a direct cause-and-effect linkage between variables ex. whenever a manager encounters a certain problem or situation (such as motivating employees to work harder, a universal approach exists that it will lead to a desired outcome ( such as raising pay or increasing autonomy)

CONTINGENCY APPROACH - acknowledges several other variables that alter the direct relationship. It means that appropriate managerial actions in any given situation depend on elements of that situation. most situations and outcomes are contingent; that is, the relationship between any two variables is likely to be influenced by other variables

Interactionist Perspective on Behavior in Organizations INTERACTIONALISM -this view assumes that individual behavior results from a continuous and multidirectional interaction between the characteristics of a person and characteristics of a situation. -attempts to explain how people select, interpret, nd change various situations .

FIGURE 3

INTERACTIONAL VIEW -implies that simple cause-and-effect descriptions of organizational phenomena are not enough. For example, one set of research studies may suggest that job changes will lead to improved attitudes. Another set of studies may propose that attitudes influence how people perceive their jobs in the first place. Both positions are probably incomplete: employee attitudes may influence job perception, but these perceptions may in turn influence future attitudes.
