How can you help? Be a good listener!! Provide feedback Bring up topics of concern Allow for pauses Be aware of other people’s beliefs and culture Be sensitive to comfort level with touch Make sure hearing aids are on (yours and theirs!!)

Helping (continued…) Show interest in what the resident is saying. Do not ignore resident request Show respect Lean forward to show your interest Talk directly, face to face Be empathetic Pay attention to family members and friends, as well

Fact and Opinion Subjective information - opinion Objective information - fact Gather direct information using all your senses Sight, smell, touch, hearing Be alert to resident condition when gathering information When reporting, make sure to give factual report

Documentation Military time – use 24 hour clock Incident reporting…be accurate

Special needs communication Hearing impaired Vision impaired – keep room orderly Stroke – sometimes affects speech and comprehension Use white boards, pictures Anger Inappropriate behavior – Dementia, aggressive, pushing boundaries Try distraction, redirection Always remain calm Back away slowly/get help
