Cheerdance: History, Basics, and Fundamental Movements St. Paul School Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo Prepared by: Miss Saharah Jade Solis

What is Cheerdance? • Cheerdance is a combination of cheer and dance. • To cheer means to motivate a team through chants and shouts. • To dance means to express emotions through rhythmic movement. • Cheerdance combines energy, teamwork, rhythm, and performance.

Cheerleading vs. Cheerdance • Cheerleading focuses on gymnastics, stunts, and acrobatics. • Cheerdance emphasizes choreography, rhythm, and expression. • Cheerleading = athletic skill; Cheerdance = performance art. • Both promote school spirit, discipline, and teamwork.

History of Cheerleading • Originated in Great Britain (1860s), entered the US in the 1880s. • Early cheerleaders were men called 'yell leaders'. • Women joined in the 1920s–30s, leading to wider popularity. • 1960s–70s: Feminization of cheerleading. • Lawrence 'Herkie' Herkimer revolutionized cheerleading with camps and pom-poms.

Cheerleading in the Philippines • Officially emerged in 1993 with the Cheerleading Philippines Federation (CPF). • CPF governs national competitions and cheerdance activities. • Major competitions: - UAAP Cheerdance Competition - NCAA Cheerleading Competition - National Cheerleading Championships (NCC)

Fundamental Arm Motions 1. High V – Arms up in a V shape. 2. Low V – Arms down in a V shape. 3. Dagger – Fists near chest, elbows tucked in. 4. Touchdown – Arms straight up beside ears. 5. T – Arms extended sideward. 6. Broken T – Forearms bent in front of chest.

Basic Jumps 1. Herkie – One leg bent, the other in a split position. 2. Toe Touch – Jump and touch both toes. 3. Pike – Legs extended forward, arms over legs. Each jump requires timing, strength, and control.

Values and Benefits of Cheerdance • Promotes teamwork and cooperation. • Builds discipline, confidence, and leadership. • Improves flexibility, rhythm, and stamina. • Boosts school spirit and camaraderie.

Class Activity: 'Follow the Cheer!' • Stand up and get ready to move! • The teacher will call out random arm motions and jumps. • Perform each one quickly in rhythm with the music. • Example: 'High V! T! Pike!' – Show energy and enthusiasm!

Reflection Write a short reflection (5–7 sentences): ‘What values and skills can we learn from cheerdance that we can apply in daily life?’
