Definition Cheilitis is a medical condition that result in inflammation of lips marked by one or more symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, dryness, crack. Cheilitis can be affect a side effect of certain drug, high dose of vitamin A, iron deficiency, vitamin b12 deficiency and oral candidiasis.

Causes Dry or chapped lips: Exposure to harsh weather conditions, dehydration, or habitual lip licking can lead to dry and chapped lips. Infections: Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections can cause inflammation of the lips. Contact dermatitis: Allergic reactions to certain substances like lip balms, toothpaste, or cosmetics. Sun exposure: Prolonged exposure to sunlight without protection, especially in individuals with sun-sensitive skin. Nutritional deficiencies: Lack of certain vitamin B. Autoimmune conditions: Conditions like lupus or Sjogren's syndrome.

Types Cheilitis Exfoliativa:- It is inflammatory condition of lips in which continuous peeling of outer lips, especially seen in lower lip. Allergic Contact Cheilitis:- It is due to type IV hypersensitivity reaction contact with allergen and eczema like inflammation of outer lip. Actinic Cheilitis:- It is precancerous lesion that form most commonly on lower lip. Cheilitis Glandularis:- It affect minor salivary gland and surrounding tissue of lip. Angular Cheilitis:- Small crack in one or both corner of mouth

Clinical Manifestation Swelling Redness Dryness Crack on lips Ulceration Tingling Edema Burning or pain Whitish discoloration on lip Irritation

Diagnostic Evaluation Biopsy Patch test Physical examination Repeated open application test Photopatch test

Treatment moisturizing lip balms, avoiding irritants, and staying hydrated can help in cases of dry or chapped lips. Infections may require antimicrobial medications, while allergic reactions may necessitate identifying and avoiding the triggering substances. Medical management includes antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, topical steroid,cryotherapy,antifungal cream, antihistamine, corticosteroid ointment. Maintain oral hygiene.
