When Jose Rizal was only 11 years old, he witnessed the extraordinary bravery of his mother: The Spaniards arrested Doña Teodora and made her walk 50 kilometers around Laguna. 16 FIRST TASTE OF INJUSTICE

Doña Teodora was charged and imprisoned for two years without trial for falsehoods leveled against her, particularly an accusation that she attempted to poison her sister-in-law. She was around 45 years old at the time. 17 FIRST TASTE OF INJUSTICE

This was just one of the numerous sacrifices she had to endure to protect her family. It was also these persecutions that planted the seed of indignation in an 11-year-old Rizal and compelled him to write powerful propaganda against the Spaniards many years later. 18 FIRST TASTE OF INJUSTICE

The martyred Filipino priests: Jose Burgos, Mariano Gomes, and Jacinto Zamora died on February 17, 1872. They were falsely implicated in the Cavite uprising and executed by garroted in Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park). The governor-general at that time was Rafael Izquierdo. 19 The Three Martyrs

The mutiny was actually leaded by Fernando La Madrid, a mestizo sargeant. It was participated by 200 soldiers and laborers. 20 The Three Martyrs

The three priests inspired the Ilustrado movement and Jose Rizal paid tribute to them in his second novel, El Filibusterismo. In 1998, their common grave and bones were located in Paco Cemetery. A memorial marker has been placed on the burial site. 21 The Three Martyrs
