DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CILIA AND FLAGELLA By: Namrata Singh Roll no.- 15Zoo- 016 M.Sc. Semester 3 P.G. Department of Zoology, Utkal University, Vani Vihar - 751004.

CILIA FLAGELLA DEFINITION Cilia are short, hair like appendages extending from the surface of a living cell. Flagella are long, threadlike appendages on the surface of a living cell. CROSS SECTION Nexin arm present. Nexin arm absent. LENGTH Short Longer than cilia SIZE Very small in size, 5-10µ long Much longer, about 150µ long MOTION Rotational, like a motor, very fast moving Wave-like, undulating, sinusoidal, slow movement compared to cilia BEAT Cilia beat in a coordinated rhythm either simultaneously (synchronous) or one after the other ( metachronic ). They beat independent of each other. DENSITY Many per cell Fewer in number FOUND IN Eukaryotes Both in eukaryotes and prokaryotes FUNCTION Help in locomotion, feeding circulation, aeration. Help in locomotion only.
