BLOCK SCHEDULING AND ITS GIFT OF TIME: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ROBERT C. MORRIS University of West Georgia, USA 1. Encourages organization, time management and the development of study skills. 2. Provides opportunities for in-depth learning 3. Promotes active rather than passive learning 4. Provides more time for teachers to identify student needs, respond individually to student performance, and offer students appropriate accelerated and remedial assistance 5. Provides increased opportunities for student learning and success because of the longer duration of each class period. Less time will be spent starting and closing the activity

6. Stimulates student thinking by providing time for a variety of learning activities within a class period 7. Provides more time for the development of meaningful rapport between students and teachers 8. Increases instructional planning time for teachers 9. Provides the structure for interdisciplinary coordination 10. Teachers will have in-common planning time, which will provide opportunities for parent conferences, and continual and relevant staff development and training.

Parallel Block Scheduling A parallel block schedule is the format most commonly used in elementary schools. The general definition holds true for the parallel block as well. Snell, Lowman, and Canady describe parallel block scheduling (PBS) as: A flexible method of scheduling that addresses student grouping, time for teacher planning, and scheduling of subjects, support services and staff. PBS allows both small instructional groups to be scheduled for subjects like directed reading and math and larger groups for other subjects. Support services, which may have been pull-out remedial or enrichment programs, are scheduled primarily during Extension Center time, thereby reducing class interruptions and the stigma associated with leaving the class for special services.

FEATURE: 1. ONLY 5 SUBJECTS IN ONE DAY (CAN BE NEGOTIATED AS 4 SUBJECTS WITH ARRANGEMENTS TO BE MADE FOR ESP AND TLE) 2. FOR SMALL SCHOOL WITH 1 SECTION ONLY PER GRADE LEVEL: 1 TEACHER FOR SCIENCE & MATH, 1 TEACHER FOR ENGLISH & FILIPINO, 1 TEACHER FOR MAPEH & ARAL PAN, AND 1 TEACHER FOR TLE AND ESP. 3. FOR SCHOOLS WITH 2 SECTIONS PER GRADE LEVEL: 1 TEACHER IN EVERY SUBJECT. 4. THE FIRST SESSION IN A SUBJECT WILL BE DEVOTED TO CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND THE SECOND SESSION IN A DAY WILL BE DEVOTED TO HANDS ON ACTIVITY OR PRACTICE OF LEARNING, 5. Students will only focus on 4 or 5 subjects a day with ample amount of time for concept practice. 6. Teacher will be teaching one subject only but in all grade levels. Spiraling of concepts will be ensured. Friday schedule will be utilized for Catch Up Friday Program. LAC Sessions can be school based, cluster based, or district based using the parallel schedules.

Loading per Day: small school (one section per grade level) with 4 teachers Teacher A (handling science & math) = 50 mins per subject x 6 = 300 + 40 (advisory) Teacher B (handling English & Filipino) = 50 mins per subject x 6 = 300 + 40 (advisory) Teacher C (handling Aralin Panlipinan & MAPEH) = 40 mins per subject x 6= 240 +40 (advisory) Teacher D (handling ESP and TLE) = 80 minutes for both x 3 = 240 (should be given teaching related ancillary)

Thank You!
