ClassroOm language: Questioning
What are the elements of effective questioning? Questions of teacher must have a purpose Why am I asking this? What am I trying to teach and what do I expect students to learn?
Planning questions If you are going to use questioning to improve what and how pupils learn, you should formulate different types of questions: both the closed, product type of question and the open, process type. Write down the main questions that you will use in a lesson. The questions you plan will need to be in sequences of increasing difficulty. In addition, you will need to ask questions of different degrees of cognitive complexity in order to challenge pupils and develop their thinking
Tips Formulate Closed questions to elicit knowledge/understanding Formulate Open questions to promote higher order thinking and extend learning Allow 3 or 5 seconds of wait time after asking a question before a student’s response Encourage students to respond in some way to each question asked
Bloom’s Taxonomy strategy for building and evaluating classroom questions Bloom’s taxonomy 1. Knowledge 2. Comprehension 3. Application 4. Analysis 5. Synthesis 6. Evaluation (full information is given Handout 1
