ANSWER: ₱5.00 / pencil KNOWLEDGE CHECK: If 5 pencils cost ₱25.00, how much is 1 pencil?

ANSWER: 2 books / day KNOWLEDGE CHECK: If Sarah can read 14 books in a week, how many books can she read in a day?

ANSWER: 60 miles / hour KNOWLEDGE CHECK: A car travels 120 miles in 2 hours. What is its speed?

LESSON OBJECTIVES: Define and identify rates and unit rates in word problems GRADE 7 MATH KNOWLEDGE

LESSON OBJECTIVES: Accurately solve word problems involving various types of rates (e.g., speed, unit price, work rate) GRADE 7 MATH SKILL

LESSON OBJECTIVES: Appreciate the real-world applications of rates GRADE 7 MATH ATTITUDE

LESSON 3 SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING RATES

Rate is the ratio between two quantities with different units. Rate tells how quickly one quantity changes in relation to another quantity. WHAT IS A RATE? Rate = Elliot can type 40 words in 60 seconds.

A unit rate is a type of ratio that compares a quantity to one unit of another quantity. In simpler terms, it's a rate expressed with a denominator of one. WHAT IS A UNIT RATE? Rate = Elliot can type 40 words in 1 minute

WORKED EXAMPLES Example 1: Aliyah can jog 6 km in 2 hours. At this rate, how many kilometers can Aliyah jog in 5 hours?

Rate = Fraction = STEP 1: Express the rate as a fraction Example 1: Aliyah can jog 6 km in 2 hours. At this rate, how many kilometers can Aliyah jog in 5 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES:

Fraction = = STEP 2: Reduce the resulting fraction to unit rate. Example 1: Aliyah can jog 6 km in 2 hours. At this rate, how many kilometers can Aliyah jog in 5 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES:

x 5 hours = STEP 3: Compute what is asked in the problem. Example 1: Aliyah can jog 6 km in 2 hours. At this rate, how many kilometers can Aliyah jog in 5 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES: 15 km

STEP 4: Write your conclusion. Example 1: Aliyah can jog 6 km in 2 hours. At this rate, how many kilometers can Aliyah jog in 5 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES: Therefore, Aliyah can jog for 15 kilometers in 5 hours.

WORKED EXAMPLES Example 2: Jim can write 10 pages of his novel in 4 hours. At this rate, how many pages can Jim write in 16 hours?

Rate = Fraction = STEP 1: Express the rate as a fraction Example 2: Jim can write 10 pages of his novel in 4 hours. At this rate, how many pages can Jim write in 16 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES:

Fraction = = STEP 2: Reduce the resulting fraction to unit rate. Example 2: Jim can write 10 pages of his novel in 4 hours. At this rate, how many pages can Jim write in 16 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES:

x 16 hours = 40 hours STEP 3: Compute what is asked in the problem. Example 2: Jim can write 10 pages of his novel in 4 hours. At this rate, how many pages can Jim write in 16 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES:

STEP 4: Write your conclusion. Example 2: Jim can write 10 pages of his novel in 4 hours. At this rate, how many pages can Jim write in 16 hours? WORKED EXAMPLES: Therefore, Jim can write 40 pages of his novel in 16 hours.

WORKED EXAMPLES Example 3: During a strong typhoon, the water level in Tamogong River is rising at a rate of 1 meter every 2 hours. If the community only has 6 hours to evacuate to a safe zone, at what water level is considered the critical level above the current level of water?

"You want to buy some snacks for your class party. The local store sells chips at ₱150 for 3 large bags, while the supermarket sells the same chips at ₱220 for 5 large bags. Which store offers the better deal?"

"If the inflation rate causes an increase of 3 pesos per year to a loaf of bread that costs ₱100.00 today, how much would it theoretically cost 3 years from now due to inflation? How does inflation affect the prices of commodities?"

ACTIVITY NO. __ Instructio n : R e ad each question carefully and solve the problem following the steps. Aaron travels 18 km in 3 hours, how many kilometers he has reached in 2 hours?

Rate = Fraction = STEP 1: Express the rate as a fraction Aaron travels 18 km in 3 hours, how many kilometers he has reached in 2 hours? ASSESSMENT:

Fraction = = STEP 2: Reduce the resulting fraction to unit rate. Aaron travels 18 km in 3 hours, how many kilometers he has reached in 2 hours? ASSESSMENT:

x 2 hours = 12 km STEP 3: Compute what is asked in the problem. Aaron travels 18 km in 3 hours, how many kilometers he has reached in 2 hours? ASSESSMENT:

STEP 4: Write your conclusion. Aaron travels 18 km in 3 hours, how many kilometers he has reached in 2 hours? ASSESSMENT: Therefore, Aaron has reached 12 kilometers in 2 hours.
