Slide Content

Martha Cabrera - Ferez

Cleft sentences are special constructions
which are used to give emphasis to a
particular part of the sentence.
These type of sentences are introduced by
a clause beginning with What or by It is/It
was
They are particularly useful when writing
where we cannot use intonation for
purposes of focus or emphasis, but they are
also frequently used in speech.

Structure:
What + focus + to be
Ex: I enjoyed the family most in my trip to
Phoenix.
What I enjoyed most in my trip to Phoenix
was my family.
Ex: We now need actions rather than
words.
What we now need are actions rather
than words.

You can also start a sentence with
The thing….
Ex: I enjoyed my family most in my trip to
Phoenix.
What I enjoyed most in my trip to Phoenix
was my family.
The thing that I enjoyed most in my trip to
Phoenix was my family.

It is sometimes very effective to use ALL
instead of WHAT in a cleft structure if you
want to focus on one particular thing
and nothing else.
Ex: I want to finish my MA.
All I want to do is to finish my MA.
Ex: I want to have some fun.
All I want to do is have some fun.

This structure joins the words that we want
to focus on to the relative clause with that,
who, or when
This construction enables us to focus on
different aspects of the information, which
may be important at the time.
Ex: My brother won a BMW in the Sorteo
Tec
It was my brother who won the BMW in the
Sorteo Tec.
It was a BMW that my brother won in the
