independent clauses that are joined by the coordinating conjunctions. One way to
easily spot if a sentence is compound by looking for the coordinating
conjunctions also known as FANBOYS.

What two clauses made up sentence B? Which clause can stand alone?
Which clause cannot?
The clause which expresses a complete thought and can stand alone is
what we call an independent clause, while the clause which cannot stand
alone and has incomplete thought is called a dependent/subordinate
clause. Once these two clauses are put together, they make up a complex
sentence.
A complex sentence is a sentence that is made of one independent clause
and one or more subordinate clauses.
An independent clause has a complete thought and can stand on its own.
It is a complete sentence in itself.
A subordinate/dependent clause, on the other hand, cannot stand on its
own. It does not express a complete thought.
For example:

Conjunction (Dependent Clause) Subordinating conjunctions are used to
introduce a subordinate/dependent clause.

Snap your fingers twice if the sentence is complex and stomp your right
foot once if it is not.

COVID-19 Pandemic.
This is a complex sentence because the clause Classes in the Philippines
shift into distance learning is an independent clause that has complete
idea while the clause because of the COVID-19 Pandemic is a
subordinate clause introduced by the subordinating conjunction because.
2.Students can only use the online learning modality this New Normal set
up.
This is not a complex sentence since it is only made up of one complete
idea. This is an example of a simple sentence.
3.Although face to face classes are prohibited, DepEd prepared modules
and worksheets to ensure learning of the students.
It is a complex sentence. Although face to face classes are prohibited is
the dependent clause introduced by the subordinating conjunction
although, while DepEd prepared modules and worksheets to ensure
learning of the students is the independent clause.

the room structuring arrangement for group activity purposes is observed.
4.Parents will serve as the students’ teachers since their kids will be
home-schooled.
This is another complex sentence because the clause Parents will serve as
the students’ teacher is the independent clause, and since their kids will
be home-schooled is the dependent clause. The subordinating conjunction
used was since.
5.Distance learning is a unique opportunity for the students and it can
also give them a chance to collaborate with others.
This not a complex sentence. It is a compound sentence because there are
two simple sentences joined by the coordinating conjunction and.
