18 PHILIPPINE THEATER AND PERFORMING GROUPS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 19 Define and explain theater. Identify the Philippine Theater and Performing Groups. Discuss the study of Inoa R. Weltsek and Tabone (2014) on the study of the relationship between theater arts and student literacy and mathematics achievement. Perform at least one form of art that is present in a theater play production.
What is theater? 20 It is one of the major art form that brings together all other art forms – from painting and sculpture, to installation art, to music, to dance, to literature, even to computer arts – in a single production. A story is acted out on stage by actors portraying the characters, bringing them to life and developing the plot through dialogue and actions, and sometimes through song and/or dance.
PETA and TANGHALANG PILIPINO 21 With the American presence in the Philippines for the first half of the 20 th century, it was inevitable that many U.S. and European theater forms and scripts found their way here.
22 Among them are the classics, such as the plays of William Shakespeare, as well as the works of great American playwrights. At the same time, local theater groups staged original Philippine zarzuelas which were plays performed in song, similar to the European opera.
PHILIPPINE EDUCATIONAL THEATER ASSOCIATION (PETA) 23 Founded in1967 by Cecile Guidote -Alvarez, and Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, founded in 1987. The productions of these groups span the range from daring new presentations of classical works , to the spectacle of Philippine myths and legends, to commentaries on current social and political issues.
25 Meanwhile, other Philippine theater groups are also staging original and adapted plays and musical productions, primarily in English.
26 REPERTORY PHILIPPINES
REPERTORY PHILIPPINES 27 In 1967, theater director Zenaida Amador fulfilled her dream of bringing the best Broadway and London’s West End to Filipino audiences. Together with actress Baby Barredo , Amador established Repertory Philippines, a company that not only staged English-language plays and musicals year-round but trained actors and actresses as well.
28 Multi- awarded theater actress and singer, LES SALONGA, in fact, began her career as a child lead in production of Repertory Philippines. From there, she went on to become an international stage superstar in the lead role of KIM in Miss Saigon – putting the Philippines on the world map in terms of theater talent.

A study on the relationship between theater arts and student literacy and mathematics achievement 42 Inoa , R., Weltsek , G., & Tabone , C. (2014). A study on the relationship between theater arts and student literacy and mathematics achievement. Journal for Learning through the Arts: A Research Journal on Arts Integration in Schools and Communities, 10(1). Abstract: Past studies have shown positive relationships between the arts and academic achievement when the arts are integrated into language arts, mathematics, and science classes. This study investigated the effects of the Integrating Theater Arts Project (ITAP) which integrates the theater arts into a traditional language arts curriculum. The sample consisted of sixth and seventh grade students enrolled in a high poverty urban school district. Findings indicated that students in arts integrated classrooms tended to outperform their counterparts in both math and language arts. The authors concluded that integrating theater arts education into traditional curricula may promote academic achievement among participating students.
