GEC 105: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON 1: Communication in 21 st Century This lesson focuses on the basic concepts of communication process such as Nature of Communication, Components of Communication Process, Uses of Communication, Barriers in Communication, Forms of Communication in 21 st Century, Non-Verbal Communication, and Ethical Communication. The lesson also emphasizes the values needed while participating in a communication process which will result to purposive communication such as respect for others opinion, open mindedness, sharing ideas and giving others to speak, and express feelings. Finally, the lesson will develop the self confidence of the students in speaking through role playing activities involving situations in communication process. Thus, resulting to a warm up of their communication skills. Description of the Lesson

It is the process of exchanging ideas, views and emotions of the participants . Communication has interaction among the participants .

It is the transmission of messages verbally, non-verbally, visually, and electronically . Message has a content to be defined by the receiver of the message .

GEC 105: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON 1: Communication in 21 st Century Sender The Sender is the speaker who conveys the message , oral or written. The goal of the sender is to not only to send the message but also to make sure the message is used in a communication. Receiver The Receiver is the listener, the one who listens and decodes the conveyed message . The receiver should filter the message based in his/her knowledge and experiences . Message The Message is t he information, ideas or even feelings to be transmitted in the communication process . The message should be clear, courteous, and concise. Feedback The Feedback is the verbal or non-verbal response of the receiver . The feedback should promote goodness and not a constructive criticism. Note all the times we are the ones who speak, we should know also how to listen. This is how purposive communication usually works.

GEC 105: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON 1: Communication in 21 st Century Types of Communicatio n According to Style Formal Communication employs formal language delivered orally or in written form — lectures, public talks/speeches, research and project proposals, reports and business letters. Its main objectives are to inform , to entertain, and to persuade. Informal Communication does not employ formal language . It involves personal and ordinary conversations with friends, family members, or acquaintances about anything under the sun (everyday talks, phone calls, e - mail messages, personal notes, letters, or text messages) . Its purposes are to socialize and to enhance relationship .

GEC 105: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON 1: Communication in 21 st Century Communication Interference/Barriers Physical Barrier – It is described as structural obstructions in both humanmade and natural environment that block effective communication so that messages cannot be sent from the sender to the receiver. Semantic Barrier - This pertains the misunderstanding between the sender and receiver arising due to the different meanings of words, and other symbols used in the communication.

GEC 105: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON 1: Communication in 21 st Century Communication Interference/Barriers Psychosocial Barrier – This influences the communicators’ attitude toward each other, thus limiting their ability to communicate effectively. It may arise from the differences in social background, upbringing, professional status, interest, and experiences. Psychological Barrier – This is a barrier that arises from the emotional state of the communicator.

GEC 105: PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON 1: Communication in 21 st Century Nonverbal Paralinguistic Elements These include the different attributes of voice that accompany the word we say. Voice quality refers to the pleasant or unpleasant a person’s voice sounds. Pitch is the highness or lowness of the tone. Tempo refers on how slow or fast one speaks. Volume points to the force of the voice or how loud or soft it goes. Juncture is the pauses or breaks applied between thought units or at the end of utterances.
