A. We form relationships because we need to belong. We have a fundamental
human inclination to bond with others.
1. What we need from social relationships.
a. We need social bonds that are both interactive and emotionally close.
b. Interacting only with people for whom we have no real feelings would be
unrewarding.
2. Meeting our social needs online.
a. Research has shown that relationships formed online are often just as
emotionally close and interactive as face-to-face relationships.
b. Text messaging and instant messaging are used as primary means of
communicating with our social networks. We should be wary of
cyberbullying, or using the Internet to inflict emotional and psychological
harm on someone.
B. Social relationships bring rewards.
1. Social relationships bring emotional rewards, including support and
happiness.
2. Social relationships bring material rewards, including our needs for money,
food, shelter, and transportation.
3. Social relationships bring health rewards.
C. Social relationships carry costs as well as benefits, including an investment of
time, emotional support, and even money.
II. Forming and maintaining social bonds.
A. Attraction theory explains why individuals are drawn to others.
1. The process of forming most relationships begins with interpersonal
attraction, the force that draws people together. Types of interpersonal
attraction include:
a. Physical attraction is being drawn to someone because of his or her
looks.
b. Social attraction is being attracted to someone’s personality.
c. Task attraction is being attracted to a person’s abilities and
dependability.
d. Four factors are particularly powerful in sparking interpersonal attraction:
i. We are attracted by appearance.
ii. We are attracted by proximity, which refers to how close together
people live or work and how often they interact.
iii. We are attracted by similarity.

2. Uncertainty reduction theory by Berger and Calabrese suggests that you
will find uncertainty to be unpleasant, so you will be motivated to
communicate to reduce your uncertainty.
a. As we receive new pieces of information about a person, our uncertainty
continues to reduce. The theory proposes that the less uncertain we are, the
more we will like people.
b. According to predicted outcome value theory by Sunnafrank, we consider
the merits of what we learn about other people when forming opinions of
them. His theory suggests that when we dislike the information we learn,
we may like people less, not more.
3. Social exchange and equity theories: weighing costs and benefits.
a. Social exchange theory explains that people seek to maintain
relationships in which their benefits outweigh their costs.
i. Your comparison level is your realistic expectation of what you
want and what you think you deserve from a relationship.
ii. Your comparison level for alternatives measures how much
better or worse your current relationship is than your other options.
iii. The comparison level will strongly influence how satisfied you are
in that relationship.
iv. The comparison level for alternatives will influence whether that
relationship will last.
b. Equity theory borrows the concepts of cost and reward from social
exchange theory, and extends them to say that a good relationship is one in
which your ration of costs and rewards is equal to your partner’s.
i. At times, we might be over-benefited in a relationship.
ii. At other times, we might be under-benefited.
4. Relational maintenance behaviors theory explains how we maintain
relationships, using five primary behaviors:
a. Positivity includes behaviors such as acting friendly and being courteous.
b. Openness describes your willingness to discuss your relationship with
your friend or other relational partner.
c. Assurances are verbal and nonverbal behaviors that people use to stress
their faithfulness and commitment to others.
d. Social networks include all the friendships and family relationships you
have.

disclosure helps us learn more and more about a person.

Tuuterkaivenius. Naiset ovat tulleet hulluiksi, siitä päivin kun
miehiksi ovat muuttuneet. Ne ovat perineet meidän oikeudet; vaan
myöskin meidän kunnottomuudet. — Mutta mitäs minä siitä, kun
minulla on se ilo, ettei minun nimeäni vielä ole unohdettu; minun
muistoni, niinkuin jo edelläpäin ennustin, on piirustettuna
kuolemattomuuden temppeliin! — Jälkeiseni — minun lasteni lasten
lapset — tulevat ihan varmaan olemaan valtakunnan korkeimmissa
kunnia-viroissa, ja elävät minun kunnioitetun nimeni voimilla. —

Tuuterkaivenius. Kuka ei olisi sitä kuullut? kuka ei tuntisi sen
miehen nimeä, joka oli suurin muinaisuuksien tutkija ja
muinaisjätteiden kerääjä aikoinansa.
Tuuterkaivenius nuorempi (hymyillen). Semmoinenko se oli? Te
kentiesi tarkoitatte minun iso-isääni. —
Tuuterkaivenius (kiivaasti). Teidän iso-isäänne… Vaan Olli
Tuuterkaiveniuksella oli vaan yksi tytär, eikä yhtään poikaa. —
Tuuterkaivenius nuorempi. Hän lienee nainut uudellensa vanhoina
päivinään.
Tuuterkaivenius (itsekseen). Tulinko minä uudellensa vielä
naineeksi! — yksi poika — Herra Jumala! (kovasti). Sinä sitte olet

(karkaa kohti Tuuterkaivenius-nuorempata ja tarttuu kiini häneen).
Onnetoin sukujättö! miksi piilet ja kierrät sinä ympäri näitä seutuja?
mikäs on sinun toimesi, sinun ammattisi?
Tuuterkaivenius nuorempi. Ammattini? Minä olen vähän iso-isäni
tapainen; sillä minä kuleksin ympäri kyliä ja kokoilen luita, joita
sitten myyn kauppamiehille, jotka niitä vievät ulkomaalle, missä
niistä jauhetaan lantaa pelloille ja niituille (menee).
Tuuterkaivenius (ärjyen, lyöpi kämmenellään otsaansa). Haa!
loistava sikiö! (Rummut, pillit ja tykkien-paukaukset pauhavat.
Esintö-paikalla on aivan pimeä, niin että ampuma-tulen väläykset
näkyvät).
Viidestoista kohtaus.
Tuuterkaivenius. Totuus (mies-äänisen laulun jälestä).
Tuuterkaivenius (mieli-vaivoissaan). Sotajoukot virtaavat joka
suunnalta! — Kuka nyt viepi minut takaisin rauhallisiin aikoihini!
(Sotamarssi laulun kanssa kuuluu esintö-paikan ulkopuolella,
kaupunki vähitellen valaistuu, niin että se lopulta tulee täyteen
valoon).
Tuuterkaivenius (joka sillä ajalla levottomasti hoippuu
edestakaisin). Nyt muuta ei ole enää vajaa, kuin että minä vaan
jonka huoneissa takamaisella puolella hän nytkin vielä seisoo, suuren
rosmon rinnalla.
Tuuterkaivenius (huimistuneena). Suuren rosmon rinnalla —
(karkaa kohti Tuuterkaivenius-nuorempata ja tarttuu kiini häneen).
Onnetoin sukujättö! miksi piilet ja kierrät sinä ympäri näitä seutuja?

Kuudestoista kohtaus.
Siivettyinen. Rouva Noukkanen.
Rouva (seisten ikkunan pielessä). Katso, miten he häärivät toinen
toisensa ympärillä; tytär juoksee ikään kuin vimmattu ja tohtori
hänen jälestänsä haju-vettä kädessä.
Siivettyinen (istuen pöydän ääressä, arkki paperia kädessä). Antaa
heidän hääriä, hyvä rouvaseni. Mies on ottanut hengen itsestänsä;
sen minä jo sanoin ensimäisenä silmänräpäyksenä, kun sain kuulla,
että hän ei ollut kotona koko vuorokautena, sillä eilen, kun hänen
kerallansa haastelin, tuntui hänen puheensa hyvin mielipuoliselle.
Rouva. Niin, sen minä tunnustan, että hänen käytöksensä
minuakin kohti eilen oli niinikään hyvin kummallinen. — Aamusilla
kuulin koiran ulvovan, ja se merkitsee, että taloon ilmaantuu ruumis.
(Menee ja istuikse pöydän ääreen).
Siivettyinen. Pitäisi käydä miehissä katselemaan Jyrängön
rannoille. Rauha kuitenkin hänen tomullensa. Se oli vaan onneksi,
että hän ei ottanut testamenttia mukaansa. — Ehkä nyt luetaan
loput testamentistä. (Lukee). "Sen suuren kivikuvan keskellä
vierashuonetta, niiden muiden suurten muinosjätteiden keralla,
lahjoitan minä Kansallis-muistojen huoneesen Helsingissä, niillä
ehdoilla, että sanottu huone rakennetaan uudesti Santalahden
(Sama huone, missä näytelmä alkoi. Vaatteella peitetty pöytä
seisoo keskellä lattiaa).
Kuudestoista kohtaus.
Siivettyinen. Rouva Noukkanen.
Rouva (seisten ikkunan pielessä). Katso, miten he häärivät toinen
toisensa ympärillä; tytär juoksee ikään kuin vimmattu ja tohtori
hänen jälestänsä haju-vettä kädessä.
Siivettyinen (istuen pöydän ääressä, arkki paperia kädessä). Antaa

saanut, ennenkuin sukulaiset pääsivät sitä haistelemaan.

rouva Noukkanen. — Sen hän ansaitsee. Ja sen minä olen tekevä

(Pöytä alkaa vähittäin kohoilla).
Rouva (sysää tuoliansa poispäin). Herra Jumala! — mitäs tämä nyt

Siivettyinen (sysää myöskin tuoliansa poispäin). Eihän kukaan
maannekaan pöydän alla?

Seitsemästoista kohtaus.
Tuuterkaivenius. Sitte Ilma ja Heimonen.
Tuuterkaivenius (nostaa pöydän alas päästään). Missäs minä nyt
jälleen olen? minusta tuntui kuin olisin kopristanut kiini kahdesta
pitkästä koukusta, joiden avulla kohosin ylös. Minä tupsahtelin
toisinaan maahan toisinaan nousin taas ylös, ikään kuin kummitus
(katselee ympärillensä). Mutta kotonanihan minä nyt olen, Jumalan
kiitos!… mikäs tämä on tässä? (ottaa paperin, jonka Siivettyinen
kädessään on pudottanut, ja aukasee sitä). Minun testamenttini!

jälkimaailmaa; vaan jos he saavat minut vielä kerran sinne, niin kyllä
he sitte hiiteen minut vievät. Mites nyt on? näytänkö minä toisen
muotoiselta kuin ennen? näytänkö minä, kuin jos olisin sata
viisikymmentä vuotta vanha? Vai miten? —

Tuuterkaivenius (tohtorille, tarttuen hänen käteensä). Kuuluttehan
te olevan taitava lääkäri, te? — voitteko te parantaa? — (asettaa
tohtorin kättä päähänsä). Tunnetteko mitään kuhmuja — mitään
kuhmuja nahan alla?
Heimonen. En, en suinkaan.
Tuuterkaivenius (kiivaasti). Koetelkaa minua tarkkaan, — minun
silmäni ovat vähän repeytyneet? eivätkö ole?
Ilma. Te pelästytätte meidät!
Tuuterkaivenius (Ilmalle). Olenko minä hillittömän näköinen! niin
kyllä, niin kyllä, alku on hyvä, sen minä huomaan. (Heimoselle).

Tuuterkaivenius. Missä minä olen ollut? olen ollut katsomassa
jälkimaailmaa; vaan jos he saavat minut vielä kerran sinne, niin kyllä
he sitte hiiteen minut vievät. Mites nyt on? näytänkö minä toisen
muotoiselta kuin ennen? näytänkö minä, kuin jos olisin sata
viisikymmentä vuotta vanha? Vai miten? —

Tuuterkaivenius (tohtorille, tarttuen hänen käteensä). Kuuluttehan
te olevan taitava lääkäri, te? — voitteko te parantaa? — (asettaa

Heimonen. En, en suinkaan.
Tuuterkaivenius (kiivaasti). Koetelkaa minua tarkkaan, — minun

Tuuterkaivenius (Ilmalle). Olenko minä hillittömän näköinen! niin
kyllä, niin kyllä, alku on hyvä, sen minä huomaan. (Heimoselle).

Tuuterkaivenius (Ilmalle). Niinpä minä pusken tulevata aikaa, minä
en enempää rupea naimaan, — sinun pitää vallita minua, — talossa
ei saa olla mitäkään emännöitsijöitä, ei ketään opettaja-naista eli
kuvernanttia, kuuletkos nyt sen, — sillä muuten minä en käy
vastaukseen, jos miten kanssani tapahtuu (tohtorille). Herra! —
Onko mitään rosmoa Tiedeakatemiassa? elkää minua sinne myökö,
