TOTAL COMMUNICATION PROCESS

Listening : Listening is one of the important skills for students as well as to professionals. Listening is an inherent and inborn skill that any human being has. Out of the four skills of Communication, Listening is used the highest in our day-to-day context.

Reflection Spot How do you learn or develop Listening skill?

Listening Skill (Continue….) It can be said that among all these four skills: Listening is learnt the first (since birth) Taught the least (almost not in classroom situations) Used the most (45%) Listening, thus, is the most useful and most important skill among all the skills. Therefore, it is rightly said : “ The best communicator is one who is a best Listener.”

Types of Listening: Attentive Listening : When you listen to something with full attention. It helps you in learning the fuller meaning of what is being said. It also helps you in retaining the information for a longer period of time. For e.g.. : Listening in classroom or listening for other academic and important reasons.

Types of Listening :(Continue….) In-attentive Listening : When you listen to something without paying much attention or for specific purpose. It helps you in getting the overview of the information being said. It helps in achieving the short-term recreational or educational goal. For E.g.. : Listening to music, Listening to dialogues of a movie, Listening to the questions in a viva or classroom situations where spontaneous reply is desired.

Types of Listening :(Continue….) Non-Listening (Hearing) When a sound come to your ears and passes away without being comprehended. It is absolutely involuntary. (non-deliberate) It can not be avoided but doesn’t affect our brain much as it is seldom comprehended. It can be converted to attentive or in-attentive listening with some conscious efforts. For E.g.. : Chirping of Birds, sound of blowing horn of a vehicle and any other distinct sound around us.

speaking : Like listening, Speaking is also one of the important skills for students as well as to professionals. Speaking is also an inherent and inborn skill that any normal human being has. Out of the four skills of Communication, Listening is used the second most in our day-to-day context.

Speaking Skill (Continue….) Reading for ME is… “Reading is a process of receiving, interpreting, evaluating and responding to the written messages”.

reading : Reading is one of the important skills for various academic and information gathering purposes. Reading is an acquired and learnt skill in human beings and it is absolutely absent in animals as it requires intellect and logical inference of verbal codes. Out of the four skills of Communication, Reading is used the second least in our day-to-day context.

reading Skill (Continue….) Reading is learnt the third (During childhood mostly in school) Taught the second most (often in classroom situations) Used the second least (16%) Reading, thus, is very useful and important skill in transferring others ideas and expressions in our life. “ A voracious Reader is a source of priceless knowledge.”

Writing Skills

writing : Writing is one of the important skills for various formal and informal information dissemination. Like Reading, Writing is an acquired and learnt skill in human beings and it is absolutely absent in animals as it requires intellect and logical inference of verbal codes. Out of the four skills of Communication, Writing is used the least in our day-to-day context. We usually avoid writing, unless it is extremely important.

writing Skill (Continue….) Writing is learnt the fourth (last) (During childhood mostly in school) Taught the highest (Mostly in classroom situations) Used the least (9%) Writing, thus, is very useful and important skill in conveying various information in different academic and non-academic situations in our life.
