Types of reading skills Skimming Scanning Intensive Reading Extensive Reading

skimming Skimming is a quick reading : to know the general meaning of a passage ; to know how the passage is organized; to get an idea of the intention of the writer. Skimming is a more complex task than scanning because it requires the reader to organize and remember some of the information given by the author, not just to locate it. Skimming is a tool in which the author's sequence can be observed, unlike scanning in which some predetermined information is sought after. ( Maija macleod )

scanning Scanning is a quick reading, focusing on locating specific information. Scanning involves quick eye movements, not necessarily linear in fashion, in which the eyes wander until the reader finds the piece of information needed. Scanning is used when a specific piece of information is required, such as a name, date, symbol, formula, or phrase, is required. The reader knows what the item looks like and so, knows when he has located what he was searching for. It is assumed then, that very little information is processed into long-term memory or even for immediate understanding because the objective is simply matching. ( Maija macleod )

Purpose of scanning to search for a word in a dictionary or index to find a phone number or an address in a directory to check the time schedule of a program in an agenda to check the price of a specific item in a catalog to know a particular information from a text steps to follow skim it first to get some ideas about that text. Notice how the information is arranged. Scan it through to get your information. Move your eyes vertically and diagonally keeping in mind the exact letters or numbers you are looking for

Difference between skimming and scanning

EXTENSIVE READING READING FOR PLEASURE… story books, novels, magazines etc. Used to obtain a general understanding of a subject. Read longer texts for pleasure, and business reports to know about the general trend. Do not worry if you don’t understand every word. Use this to improve your general knowledge. Extensive reading is always done for the comprehension of main ideas, not for specific details . The aims of extensive reading are to build reader confidence and enjoyment. Example of extensive reading : reading a novel before going to bed reading magazines or articles of interests

INTENSIVE READING READING FOR PURPOSE…… course books etc. Intensive Reading, sometimes called "Narrow Reading", may involve students reading selections by the same author or several texts about the same topic Used on shorter text to extract detail information . Involves close and accurate reading for details. Use it to grasp the details of a specific situation I mportant to understand each word, information or facts For example : read your text book for understanding concept. Insurance claims, signing contract. It helps to understand and interpret text, get central idea and etc.

BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE READING Lack of grammatical and linguistic competence Lack of motivation Lack of concentration Proper light and ventilation Size of the book Articulating the words and sentences loudly Putting finger, pen or any object on the words and sentences while reading Narrow eye span Reading for shorter time Preoccupied mind with other thoughts Tendency to complete the reading in a hurry

Reading Strategies Predict - Determine what you think will happen in the text , use the title. Visualize - Create mental images of the characters and events in the text. Questions - Stop and ask yourself questions to see if the text makes sense . Reread the text if you need more information. Connect - Think about what you already know about the text. Identify - Determine the author purpose . Find the important details, the main idea and the theme of the text. Evaluate - Think About the text as a whole and form opinions about what you read.
